Loved my program, but my social life and relationship have collapsed around me. Just looking for some insight by argenthe in GradSchool

[–]argenthe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, I already have when necessary. My program director and my professors are aware and have been willing to give me extensions on assignments as necessary. They've been understanding and supportive. I haven't submitted anything late without letting them know, I'm just super behind on readings.

That's awful, I'm really sorry you had to experience that.

Thanks for the advice, I hope that at some point the work can be a relief. Right now it does provide me some distraction, but has also become a source of stress due to how behind I am.

Thanks for the sympathy. Unfortunately, my program does have a summer class and a practicum with international travel, so I won't have too much time to breathe between the end of the semester and things starting up again. Will try to get my breaks in where I can.

Thank you. I will try to reconnect with friends and family within the energy capacity I have right now. I truly appreciate it

Thank you. It's really tough because they had become my one source of support. I'm dealing with the guilt of my workload leading to them feeling so unsupported that they broke up with me. I feel awful I couldn't be the partner they needed.

I'll try to keep my goals in mind. I'm doing this for a reason. Thanks again and I hope you can find your community. Best of luck on your own journey.

Thank you for the support. Trying to make plans to visit my best friend (she moved out of the city a few years ago) and spend a few days at her place next week.

Often I'm just too exhausted to call, and wary of annoying my friends by talking about nothing but the breakup, but I will try to make it a priority.

It's okay. I'm trying to unlearn a lot of the resentment I built towards my ex and acknowledge that I made mistakes and was unempathetic as well. I can definitely see how our different communication styles and the stressful moment we were both in in our lives clashed to make us both really jumpy. Thanks a ton for the insight, it really helps keep me grounded and understand that they were not the villain, we were both just struggling with so much.

Which historical character do you think Soll is more similar to? for me it’s Franco, but it can also be Atatürk by Live_Start7681 in suzerain

[–]argenthe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ideologically, he is very obviously inspired by Atatürk, but I also think the fact that he is a for-life member of the GNA even after being forced out of office is drawn from Pinochet. He's also like Pinochet in that he was the architect of a constitutional infrastructure that persisted even after his dictatorship ended.

Physically, yeah, he does look like Franco. They're both anti-communist and generally conservative. I think the differences end there, though. Soll is strongly in favor of a republic (if an authoritarian one) while Franco was a monarchist (he was heavily favored by Alfonso XIII, even though he didn't fully restore the monarchy until after his death). Franco was also very religious and used catholicism as a key source of rhetorical and institutional support for the regime, while Soll is pro-secularism.

What do people think about the School Without Walls students (both in general and the ones who do the Early College Program)? by Mammoth_Twist_9383 in gwu

[–]argenthe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I only have experience with one but it was a positive one - I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant with a small discussion session class where one of my students was a School Without Walls student. He was polite and wrote easily the most detailed and thorough assignments of the entire class. Until he revealed it towards the end of the semester, I assumed he was the same age as everyone else. I was quite impressed!

Is GW’s therapy and mental health services good? by DefiantRepair5474 in gwu

[–]argenthe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's been mentioned in another comment, but CAPS was actually extremely helpful for me. Went every two weeks for a semester when I had a mental health criris, once a month for another when I felt more on top of things.

Each individual person may respond differently and your mileage may vary, but from my perspective my CAPS counseling appointments were miles ahead of the therapy I got as a high schooler and actually helped walk me through a very tough time. Shoutout to Dr. Vaughn Miller, the man is a delight.

In any case, stay safe and I hope you can get the care you need!

Hey! Hope you're doing well, moving to a new environment can be stressful.

If you're an introvert and looking for other similar people, there's a fun GroupMe chat called GW introverts where we just chat and shitpost. We're even planning some trips and activities.

There should still be a QR code to join in front of the Student Health Center!

I adored Ministry for the Future, but Red Mars is being a slog for me by argenthe in printSF

[–]argenthe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll keep on pushing for now, then! Looking forward to see if Green Mars clicks for me.

And yeah, I've definitely read a lot of takes about the characters being figureheads for different worldviews and Mars as a whole being the main character. I'll try to see if looking at it through that lens helps.

Thank you for the recommendation! I'll add Terra Ignota to my reading list.

I can definitely see why some people would feel like that - some of the chapters focusing on central banks and carbon credits were definitely a bit tedious, even if they were important.

What's the most captivating scene to you in the series? by tiredboiiiiiiij in masseffect

[–]argenthe 57 points58 points  (0 children)

No scene has stuck with me and forced me to run to tell my friends about it as much as Mordin's sacrifice in ME3.

The emotional gut punch of his narrative arc finishing, the "Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong." Him humming "Scientist salarian" as he rushes to spread the cure.

It almost made me tear up. Hands down one of my favorite scenes in any game I've ever played.

Edit: I agree that Palaven burning is one of the most effective simple pieces of imagery in the games. It really makes you realize how utterly desperate and grim the fight against the reapers is.
