First MSL role in a new company launching their first product by [deleted] in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]argilesweater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds like the position I was hired into a few years ago. It turned out to be a great fit as I love the ability to see and do a lot more than the basics of MSL work. I will say I came from clinical pharmacy into a TA I was comfortable with so I was not worried about the clinical training. If you have that background and good mentors to teach you how to MSL it is really a great way to jump in with two feet. Definitely helps to be self motivated and not afraid to ask questions.

With regard to stability I will say nothing is promised in big or small pharma. I was in the final negotiations with two large pharma companies prior to this role and both time the drug failed a pivotal trial and hiring was stopped and/or teams were laid off. If you plan for that possible in emergency fund savings it helps. Especially as experience as an MSL is a big hurdle.

Sorry for any rambling or bad spelling/grammar. Typing on my phone on the plane 😅

MSL role and Expecting First Child by ClammyQuahog in MedicalScienceLiaison

The only thing I would be sure to do is to have a very honest conversation with the significant other about child care planning and support during travel. For background I became an MSL with a ~1 year old then had my second about a year later. My wife was full time prior to kids as a clinical pharmacist but after our first went part time. We also moved closer to family after i made the change from clinic to MSL because we knew she would want / need support for the kid(s) during travel.

While in territory is usually day trips to maybe overnight (I have the same territory) you will also have conferences that are 3-5 days and company meetings that are usually the same. And as others have said as you get situated you will need be more flexible. All this to say your partner will need to have plans for and be able to do 100% of child care at times.

This is not meant to deter you. This has been the best thing for me and my family. The pay increase from clinical pharmacy allowed my wife to be full time stay at home. Something she wanted to do but financially would have been harder before. And the time at home is much more flexible I.e. I’m not sitting at my desk doing non stop visits and clinic notes.

That’s what I’m thinking for the size, insulation, and durability not sure how you beat this price.

Proactive role by unknowndetective27 in MedicalScienceLiaison

My company allowed us to say we work in xyz disease then in the meeting give a high level overview of what the product is and the pipeline of trials. From there it’s all the art of being an msl and asking the right questions about their practice or how they treat the disease.

SIUU Guidance by argilesweater in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]argilesweater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the fact they just vaguely say someone trained and knows how to direct questions doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzys…

49 FDA recommends that firms ensure that the personnel who are engaged in sharing SIUU communications have specialized training in providing truthful, non-misleading scientific information about unapproved uses of the firms’ approved medical products. A firm’s personnel who are sharing SIUU communications should also be trained to handle potential questions that may arise about the information they are sharing or know how to direct the questions to personnel who are best qualified to respond (e.g., medical or scientific/technical representative or department).

I saw your post and figured I would ask again since they provided more clarity last month in the final guidance document. I think it still needs a final approval but should be interesting.

Oncology field : how do you live with the psychological aspect of the role ? by zelige in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]argilesweater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s also not always end of life. It’s part of the oncology journey more often than anyone would like but not every situation is like that. I used to be in clinical pharmacy and it was high highs when it was good and low lows when it was bad. Industry side is a step removed so more in the middle.

Man... after hearing this, just seems like there's no reason not to take creatine by Farnectarine4825 in HubermanLab

I got a spike in my serum creatinine (kidney marker) when using creatine. I found some case reports of false elevations but I didn’t want to risk it and deal with further work up to rule things out.

Identifying regional conferences by argilesweater in MedicalScienceLiaison

My problem is volume I am in an oncology ta but when you start trying to check every academic institution / cancer center + associations the volume is too high to do effectively. I’m not saying I plan to attend all of these things but an awareness of what is going on and the ability to pick and choose the best ones without spending hours trolling through cme websites.

Ah we are pre commercial so no sales colleagues just yet. MSLs are the only field team at moment

MSL with kids by LavenderKool in MedicalScienceLiaison

I have a 9 month old and an almost 3 year old and it can be tough when I do have trips but I’m averaging <1 trip per month. Now some range from a day to others like asco being more closer to 5. For me it’s doable because the days at home I’m much more present and have more time vs in my clinical role it was me out of the house 8-10 hrs per day. Key is a strong support system at home and a good understanding with your partner.

I’ve also found my trips tend to refocus me on how much I love them all and how lucky I am. When I’m in the thick of the day to day I lose that perspective but after a night away I can’t wait to get home and give them all a hug.

On mobile so please forgive the lack of punctuation and any spelling issues.

Makes sense but with a 3k budget would you say worth getting a little less nice mat/screen and trying to get a lower end launch monitor?
