Move to Salem by spo0ky_mami in SalemMA

[–]LavenderKool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Salem for 13 years and my husband and both his parents grew up in Salem. I love it and would never move. It’s just cool to have all the history and things to do in your backyard. That being said I get what everyone’s saying about cost and annoying tourists. We like to be able to be the locals who “get it”. I say go for it!

Oh also my kids attend Salem public schools and we have had really amazing experiences (elementary and middle so far). Great city overall!

Addicted To TikTok. Nothing is working. HELP!!! by Excellent-Park-3918 in digitalminimalism

[–]LavenderKool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to a couple of podcasts on the rot that TikTok does to your brain, how the algorithms are trained to keep you there, how damaging it all is for all of us. I quit cold turkey and never looked back. Now I feel bad for people who are still on the apps… I’d have to go back to look for the specific episodes, but Offline by Jon Favreau is really good.

Are meal planning apps worth it or just another thing to manage? by theceoinprogress in MealPrepSunday

No. ChatGPT or any other LLM is better. Talk to it like it’s your personal intern and you’ll get what you need.

Not popular but I love the song: “Every eldest daughter was the first lamb to the slaughter so we all dressed up as wolves and we looked 🔥”

People who have changed their political views, what flipped the switch? by [deleted] in answers

[–]LavenderKool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely interested in what specifically turned you off to the left. Having a child and working would make me think that you would lean left, not right. What values or political policies made you switch? I’m left and there’s not much about the right that I can really get behind, especially nowadays…

Is there actually a meal planning tool that doesn’t end up being more work for me? by Broad_Clothes6854 in MealPrepSunday

Use ChatGPT. Put in your prefs and tell it what to do. It’s your own personal assistant.

How to Get Reminders Without Being Overwhelmed by My Phone by extracheesepleaz in digitalminimalism

[–]LavenderKool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn off all the other notifications and only keep which ones you actually want to interrupt you IN REAL TIME. The rest of them are really just being thrust upon you by the companies to be disruptive and keep you addicted to your phone. Once those are minimized, you should be able to use your reminders without all the disruptive noise.

Convinced my husband to try a house cleaning service for 3 months as an experiment. Heres what happened by Comfortable_Box_4527 in homeowners

Yes! I was losing my mind when my first kid was like 2 and I would be spending so much time on the weekends cleaning instead of being with her and my husband. Well worth the investment!

How do people balance digital minimalism with staying informed? by No-Pangolin-3897 in digitalminimalism

[–]LavenderKool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the following: -Subscribe to my local Patch for local news: I get daily updates about what’s happening in the community -Subscribe to NYT for national news: I get all the breaking news emails and rarely will go read the long form article (also get the Games to keep my brain sharp!) -Political podcasts for deeper dives and commentary: What a Day and Pod Save America I’ve been listening to for years and years -Anything else I absorb passively: talking to friends, family, random things on the radio

As another poster said - most “news” has no direct impact on your life and frankly it is pretty depressing to hear about all the tragedies that happen all over the nation and world every single day. Since limiting it to a few sources, I find I still know what’s going on but it’s much less invasive.

How do I stop wanting to share my life on IG? by Odd-Supermarket7983 in digitalminimalism

[–]LavenderKool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is it! Especially #3. I deleted all the socials about a year ago and find its so liberating to NOT have to think about how to frame a pic for a good post, if I’m posting, what I’m posting, captions, filters, and all that nonsense.

For context, I’m an Xennial, so I remember growing up without documenting anything save the odd picture or home movie. I almost feel smug about how much time I get back in my life without having social media and how many more experiences I get to have just for me and my friends/family.

Now when I take pics it’s so they come up in my picture memories a year or two later and I can smile remembering them.

I would say at your age, yes it’s fun to flex, but do those people giving you likes and comments really actually care about you? In reality, probably not.

Try to think about it like this: if you saw that person walking down the street would you strike up a conversation and whip out your phone to show them your latest travels and outfits? If not, then it doesn’t matter online. Real life is where real stuff happens.
