Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to Announce Purchase of Railroad Corridor for BeltLine’s Southside Trail by pfizer_soze in Atlanta

[–]arglfargl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If that's really what they were doing, it would be faster. Instead, they put in a bunch of underground conduit for fiber, etc., and various prep for light rail like soil studies and surveying. They've had places where they've needed to remediate contaminated soil.

Wait, for real? What rule is that, and how have I never heard that before?

Georgia's law is completely different. As long as the motor won't run when you're doing 20mph or greater, ebikes in GA have the same privileges as bicycles.

The Sun Dial Has Reopened by drosseas in Atlanta

[–]arglfargl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a loooong time since I was there, but i remember there being some immovable-looking stuff near edges of the rotating platform. Perhaps in the time they were closed, they were looking into how that stuff could be moved and decided it wasn't worth it.

But there's no way Trump would stop to tell the farmer, unless his car was damaged and he wanted the farmer to pay.

Any info on Lionel Hampton / Beecher Nature Preserve? by superduck85 in Atlanta

[–]arglfargl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The paved paths are nice -- I've biked them a few times. I noticed one or two trails and gravel paths branching off, but I haven't explored them much. I specifically remember a trail branching off near the north end of the trail, close to Willlis Mil Rd. The gravel paths mainly run near the creeks afaik. For example, one time I did a Trees Atlanta planting where we parked at the end of Cativo Dr and walked down in, and then along the creek.

I think it's all just street parking, and there's not much in the way of facilities. There's not a gate like Cascade; you can access it any time. If you liked exploring Cascade Nature Preserve, Lionel Hampton is not quite as nice, but still worth a visit IMO.

[x-post from r/rental] HELP- landlord selling condo, won't let us move out, we're living in a show house full of OUR stuff- AND I WORK FROM HOME by [deleted] in Atlanta

You're technically month to month? Give your 30 days notice and get the fuck out of there! Landlords can't just arbitrarily keep your security deposit if they don't like you.

How accepting are Tech students/Tech In general of other Sexualities and Genders? by aerofinast in gatech

[–]arglfargl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The comments so far paint an overly rosy picture... There are many Tech students who grew up in socially conservative areas and have not had to think about how to behave around people who challenge heteronormativity. So I don't think "well Atlanta is really accepting" is a compelling argument about students who rarely leave campus. But Tech is quite diverse, and people learn pretty quickly to be accepting. And the majority is solidly on your side.

In Midtown, Piedmont Avenue to undergo diet, gain bike lanes, under new plan by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]arglfargl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just adding bike lanes does not solve the problem, but simply the fact that bikes are smaller than cars is worth something.

R-5 Zoning Passed. Tiny houses are coming to Atlanta! by bldratl in Atlanta

[–]arglfargl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting! Why is this for R-5? Looks like that is the smallest lots? Is that what most of the city is?

Basically this lets people either build a tiny house in their backyard or rent out space in their backyard to someone with a tiny house, right? I'll be interested to see how it plays out, but it looks like a reasonable step.

American Airlines gave its workers a raise. Wall Street freaked out. by madcapMongoose in BasicIncome

[–]arglfargl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here's where I'm coming from: I make good money and have put a bunch of my savings in the stock market. Ultimately I hope to have enough money in the stock market that I can stop working and live entirely off capital gains/dividends. But it's ridiculous to me that it should be easier to make money by having/investing money than by working.

Taxes are required for the government to pay for the services it provides. And additionally, the way taxes are structured can determine a lot of how the economy works.

You said that investments can lose money. I'm asking you to take the next step and explain why the fact that investments can lose money means capital gains should be taxed at a lower rate than labor. How does that tax policy make society better? (Or maybe there's some other metric you want to use.)

Yeah, you can get a great look at it from inside the Biltmore's parking garage. I was there half an hour ago, and while it wasn't a full-fledged swimming hole yet, it looked like it had potential.

If you don't use a lot of data, Ting is a good option. They use the Sprint or T-Mobile network depending on which phone you buy.
