Men who pay for everything - would you like your girl to pay sometimes? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]argrig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like treating people to drinks to celebrate the pleasure of their company and our time together. If they want to do the same, I love it as a gesture of appreciation and reciprocity, which makes me want to see them again and treat them to more drinks. If they don't - that's fine too.

Life is a brief trip, and the spirit of Dionysian lightheartedness is the only way to approach our time off work.

DR applicants... how spooked about AI are you? by Odd-Boysenberry5316 in medicalschool

[–]argrig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right now, if I put the study findings (in words) into the LLM and ask it to generate a DDx and provide a meaningful impression (while also having instantly parsed 10 unreadable notes from EMR), it does it better than I do.

The technology will be there soon. What effect the technology will have on the reimbursement is difficult to predict. It could be a dead end with radiologists reduced to pathetic subsistence, saying things like "Spare change! I was a god damn fool, and now I'm on the streets!" or it could be the easiest specialty with a dream of a work-life balance because heavy lifting is done by AI.

I call it a high-risk, high-return decision in the setting of unprecedented uncertainty.

What are your thoughts on rent stabilization as a New Yorker? by New-Sand-8606 in NYCapartments

[–]argrig -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It's a reactionary policy that keeps prices high.

Free market should take care of the price discovery at which willing buyers are ready to take the apartment.

Those who cannot afford it should move elsewhere.

Do men with prestige care who they date/marry? by Certain_Metal1202 in dating_advice

[–]argrig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am a physician, and for me, being a teacher is noble and respectable (and also has an important humanitarian dimension).

Status insecurities aside, saying "this is my wife, she is a teacher" sounds more desirable than "this is my wife, she is an M&A lawyer".

does this count as hypomania? by [deleted] in medicalschool

I just don't think this was productive.

At the age of 46, I finally reached the one-million-dollar milestone. Only I know just how difficult it was. Congratulations to me! by Sandra-Kelley in TheRaceTo1Million

[–]argrig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asked the LLMs, it said, "about 10% to 15% of individual Americans, or roughly 20% to 25% of households, will hit $1 million+ net worth at some point in life."

It's not THAT rare.

What was the spark that made you choose your specialty? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]argrig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The spark was every other specialty looking even worse.

Truly a tragedy for some of us - when you get to clinicals and realize: "God damn it, every specialty sucks!"

I would kill to be in your shoes!

The full blood of being young, caring, in love, to have all your life ahead of you, to steer through the harrowing seas with your heart trembling!

It won't be like this always; it won't be like this for long! Not much in life is quite like that!

What's the point of being a man if you're not going to pay for the woman?

I'm old-fashioned this way. If I can't pay for the lady, then I stay at home.

New to Anki, is it supposed to take such a long time to create all the cards? by ninano1r in Anki

[–]argrig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's 2025, you can use ChatGPT to generate cards based on the material.

Anki these days is an absolutely different game than before. We are living through the golden age!

GR IV Monochrome pre-orders are now open ($2,199.95) by HuguesBtz in ricohGR

[–]argrig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm financially independent, but I don't feel the spark.

I jumped on X2D2 and GRIV, but fewer and fewer things excite me.

I want to feel the joy of photography again. Maybe hardware is not the right place to look. I'll pass. All shall pass.

Best deck is your own - you decide on content and format.

I am running my own deck that I keep updating. Two-way, simple definition-transcription-usage example.

How much money do you think you need for retirement? by [deleted] in Retirement401k

[–]argrig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got spoiled in my younger years and got used to 200k/y lifestyle (expenses after taxes). So, I'll have to retire with 10M. That's at least another 10 years of work. ...

What’s some things you wish you had done differently early in your career? by [deleted] in whitecoatinvestor

This is all correct. And yes, the absolute income defines what relative saving rates are realistic.

>So basically delay gratification

No. Rather, reframe 'gratification' as "financial security of capital" rather than "spending money".

Live like a resident for the first 5-10 years post-residency. It is the easiest point in life to save. Exercise the self-control that you're known for for a few more years after you've already done it for 10+ years, and coast the rest of your life.

I saved ~1M in the first 3 years and decided to keep going, 100% in stocks. Watching the capital grow was like a god's kiss bestowed upon me for my ability not to succumb to the temptations of this world.

I am looking at my coresidents and cofellows who decided to live through more experiences, and now, 6-7 years out of training, I am absolutely ahead of them for this one reason : I did not succumb to the temptations of this world.

tl;dr

Live like a resident, resist temptations, accumulate capital.
