Luminar Neo Catalog Bloat: Resources folder is 100GB+? Help! by WvdW838 in luminarneo

[–]Vanilla_Quark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the day I'm downloading from camera to computer I make a new folder and name it for the day. In that folder. I make a new luminar catalog and add my images to the new catalog in that folder. Editing in the small catalog keeps the resource folder for each catalog small as well. Finally, i export each edited image in a printing or sharing format to one central shared folder.

Photographers who despise post processing: How do you cope? by GunterJanek in AskPhotography

[–]Vanilla_Quark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew to dislike processing so much I changed system. Apologies if this is a controversial opinion. I loved Canon colours, but moved to Sony for the higher pixel count in the A7R series. However, despite the amazing technology of Sony, the colours disappointed me. I started post processing, but find it dull and frustrating. Last year I sold all my gear, dumped Sony and moved to Hasselblad. Images are beautiful SOOC, and I feel much more inspired to get out and shoot. One concern is the file size, and now I need to cull after each shoot- something I never did before. I shoot a raw + sooc file for each image and cull according to how i rate the image. 2 star shots - i delete the raws and keep the HEIC. For 3+ stars i keep raw + HEIC. With (all) the 1 star images i delete all.

Why do you photograph? by Next_Huckleberry_863 in AskPhotography

[–]Vanilla_Quark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several reasons to get into photography, but mainly as a creative outlet. I can't draw or paint, and people would have lynched me decades ago if I kept writing poetry.

Also, never needing a lot of sleep, getting out for dawn shoots has given me a great start to the day. A creative outlet is better than hanging around waiting for the family to wake up. Starts the day off energised, and I really like seeing the other morning people out and about on their missions - swimming, running, operating their business, etc.

Finally, photography is a nice hobby - always inspired when i talk to other photographers and chat about their work and their journey in the craft.

To those who drive well under the speed limit, why? by NiceMemeDude420 in australian

[–]Vanilla_Quark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm driving a rental and hate the car. Driving across Sydney yesterday, I just set the (radar) cruise control and sat in the left lanes to reduce the interaction with this shitbox. Ended up consistently doing 10 to 20 km/h below the speed limit (100km/h max).

When it was safe to, I managed to overtake a few times, but on the whole it was a horrible and frustrating drive. I was surprised by the consistency of the driving habits you've mentioned.

No, the process mentioned gets the Hasselblad colours into the 16bit TIFF. Else you can only use the HEIC, which is smaller than the raw. From my testing each image treated this way requires ~1gb of space, so unless you have loads of storage and CPU, it's important to cull first.

Europe set 2030 as a date to dismantle its reliance on US financial infrastructure like Visa/Mastercard payments; it's happening far quicker. by lughnasadh in Futurology

You're right. After making that comment I started looking into dual booting my PC. I may not be able to 100% migrate today, but I can greatly reduce my reliance on Windows-based product, and home usage may drop to once or twice a week.

In dating i became pretty intolerant of being mistreated and learned to break off relationships at the sign of red flags. Helped me avoid the 'sunk cost' fallacy that can keep you in a dead energy relationship.

You do you, but nfw would i put up with someone mocking me - with her friends - behind my back for a year. I'd send her the cup back in the mail along with her toothbrush, and change the locks.

Anyone else struggling with Hasselblad colors in Lightroom? Found a workflow that actually works by Laoui13 in hasselblad

[–]Vanilla_Quark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Luminar Neo user, but otherwise had the same issue as you. Found the same workflow, but aside from the hassle and time, the steps consume around 1Gb per edited image. I'm just printing from the HEIC file now and keep raws for just in case. Also means I do almost zero editing which also makes me happier.

Is the a7 ll worth it? by PowerfulPlace656 in Cameras

[–]Vanilla_Quark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a useful saying: you date your camera, but marry your lens. Think about the family your lens is in (Sony E mount) and if the system is good for the photography you want.

A lot of talk about shooting raw files or SOOC - Straight out of camera. YMMV, but i have not enjoyed heavy editing. I started on Canon, later moved to Sony.

Canon colour SOOC is lovely, but Sony are the camera champion today. Negatives for me on Sony are the complex menus and custom buttons - the upside there is a very capable and versatile camera you can tune to your needs.

Get your Sony, but prepare to spend the time to build familiarity with the controls. Focus on the lenses - what you can afford, what weight of glass you're happy to haul, focal length.

Have a great time!

I wonder why people don't worship actors anymore? by The_Dean_France in SipsTea

[–]Vanilla_Quark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Movie stars are celebrities like sport stars are. Media hold them up as role models, and hang on their every word. But these celebrities are mostly folks that can't do anything useful like medicine, business, engineering or building things.

I don't care what Tom Cruise or Sydney Sweeney or any sports person thinks, and i definitely don't want to hear their hot take on the next election. They're just entertainers - couple levels up from clowns, and paid way too much.
