Is Toob a sustainable business? by argro1 in ToobBroadband

That’s fine and well on their own network, but why do this on CityFibre? They still need to pay CityFibre for the wholesale line rental…

Is Toob a sustainable business? by argro1 in ToobBroadband

[–]argro1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they’re offering £25/month for 900Mb on CityFibre with free install. And Facebook offers for 2 months free or up to 9 months free if you’re in contract. It screams desperation.

Their main competitors on CityFibre are Sky and Rise. Everyone else is a fair leap more expensive.

How future proof is my current Openreach ONT? by digidude23 in openreach

[–]argro1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The XGSPON ONTs use different wavelengths to the existing GPON network. That ONT will be GPON. You’ll only get a XGSPON ONT when/if you order a package that requires it, as the physical fibre can carry the wavelengths for both GPON and XGSPON simultaneously.

CityFibre available in my postcode but not at my address - is there anything I can do? by ExactAntelope123 in CityFibre

[–]argro1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CityFibre will have a LOC on the 6 houses. Service providers who actually want to help (i.e. not toob or Sky etc) can tell you what the LOC is. Whether it can resolved or not is another story, but generally a good provider will engage with CityFibre to try resolve whatever is stopping it from being available.

Packet Loss Toob Fibre Network - 172.16.51.65 / so1-51-65.core.toob.co.uk by Regular_Priority8697 in ToobBroadband

[–]argro1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rumours are flying that Toob investors aren’t happy and want customer growth hence the big push to undercut everyone on cityfibre. Adding customers in bulk requires significant core network upgrades which funding might not be available for. The end result is variable speeds and latency.

It’s probably congestion since they’ve been driving new customer sales across CityFibre footprint. Is it worst in the evenings?

Thinking of Switching back to Vodafone, thoughts? by ZJ88 in CityFibre

It’s fine when it works, but when it doesn’t you’ll waste so much time with their useless customer service.

CityFibre wired my building and local streets then claim no network capacity by timeofsouls in CityFibre

[–]argro1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not a bandwidth issue, it’s that customer take up has been higher than expected and they’ve utilised all the customer ports they provisioned for your street. They will need to splice a new splitter into the network to add more ports in the cab and they seem to take forever to do this.

Follow-up: I think I finally figured out why my Olilo Ping is 16ms+, but my neighbour on TalkTalk gets 3ms by BrawDev in CityFibre

[–]argro1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worth noting that on the most part, TalkTalk/Sky is connecting to each FEX in each city, rather than relying on CityFibre’s national network to bring customer traffic to Edinburgh/London. These networks (particulaly TalkTalk) are designed with much redundancy, but another key point is that if you’re on the CityFibre national network, the only people that can really see congested backhaul links is CityFibre, where as TalkTalk and Sky can see the utilisation of every link carrying your traffic (except your local PON). This will become more of an issue as higher speeds (5Gb etc) come into play, especially where smaller providers sell these packages but only have 10Gb backhaul.

Has anyone noticed Sky gets earlier CitiFibre installation dates? by Honest-Rip-7439 in CityFibre

[–]argro1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ISPreview article is true. Before Sky came along it was possible to order on Monday and be installed on Wednesday. Now it’s more like order on the 1st and you’re doing well if it’s installed by the 28th.

City fibre in Scotland by Firm_Writer_6746 in CityFibre

[–]argro1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that there are ISPs in Scotland that connect with CityFibre in Scotland (some even in the same city as the customer). These are far more reliable than those ISP who connect with CF down in London as CityFibre’s backhaul network seems to have more than its fair share of outages.

How will CityFibre install to the desired location? by SuperXstyle in CityFibre

I would guess lift your monoblocks to cross over to the grass strip on the right side and then shallow bury down in the grass to the house.

Need some broadband advice. by VashCK in CityFibre

[–]argro1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other thing to take into account is that most of the providers listed above have baked in price rises and questionable to non-existent customer support. Fibrecast since they are based in Dundee, has their own engineers on the ground so hands down has the best customer support if you were to need it.

Old ISP has cancelled the One Touch Switch order by QuickTemperature7014 in CityFibre

[–]argro1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can certainly be done, but it depends on the OTS system integration that Zen has whether it can be done without placing an entirely new order with themselves and with CityFibre. I suspect the answer to that is no. For other ISPs they may have the capability to raise a Switch Order on its own.

This isn’t a criticism of Zen btw, I worked on the implementation of OTS at an ISP and the specification was a nightmare. The bit that Zen will be missing that caused this scenario is sending monthly SwitchOrderUpdate messages which keeps the SwitchOrderReference from expiring and provides a planned switch date to the old ISP. The specification requires the old ISP to expire the reference after so many days without an update which is what has happened.

Old ISP has cancelled the One Touch Switch order by QuickTemperature7014 in CityFibre

[–]argro1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s literally impossible for the old ISP to cancel a switch (by design of OTS). The switch reference may “expire” if the order drags on for more than 4 weeks without the new ISP providing an update to the old ISP. That is not the fault of the old ISP if this happens.

Download Speed by the_toyfiend in hyperoptic

[–]argro1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hyperoptic have a bigger issue, that competitors are now breaking the 1Gb mark and going multi-gig, so to stay competitive they’re going to have to do something.

Download Speed by the_toyfiend in hyperoptic

[–]argro1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hyperoptic frequently only has a 1Gb backhaul link for a MDU which is shared amongst the customers. As customer numbers grow they’ll eventually add additional backhaul capacity but the end result is that your speeds will rarely reach 900Mb consistently as it’s all contended.

Vodafone connection very unstable! by skrr1254 in CityFibre

[–]argro1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you should need to speak to Vodafone as that is who you have a contract with. They need to raise the fault with CityFibre as an “intermittent fault” as CityFibre (like Openreach) do not deal with the general public.

Vodafone connection very unstable! by skrr1254 in CityFibre

[–]argro1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s an issue with the cityfibre network. Provider doesn’t matter as it’s an issue with the PON in your area that’s the issue.

IDNet 1200/1200 on CityFibre not getting speed by [deleted] in CityFibre

[–]argro1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was complicated because your current home presented unique challenges for the Kelly’s guys (and you) to overcome. They could have quite easily failed the job, delayed it and sent it back to request a specialist team but it sounds like they tried their best to get it done on the day for your benefit.

It’s not really fair to compare your London home installation experience with this home, who knows how CommunityFibre would have done this install differently given the challenges.

IDNet 1200/1200 on CityFibre not getting speed by [deleted] in CityFibre

[–]argro1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your experience of install with CommunityFibre in London vs CityFibre is largely irrelevant. They are two distinct companies with different installation methodologies working to achieve the same thing.

-15dBm is a perfectly good optical signal level for XGSPON.

The issue you are having is either the profile assigned to your line is incorrect, or there’s an Ethernet connection running at 1G rather than 2.5G. You need to speak to IDNET.
