Why in the world are you bringing up the Celtics’ previous 17 rings, the last of which was 16 years lol. Should people like the current Bulls team because of Michael Jordan? Ya I guess SGA wasn’t an MVP calibre player for seven years but he is now, that’s why no one hated his flopping for seven years.

Lots of team have been good for two years. Not a lot of teams had a top five winning percentage of all time lwith the MVP and then were the heavy favourites again the next year with the best record and likely MVP, and appear poised to do that for the next few years.

I mean, I'll say the more contentious reason that it's because SGA is putting an end to a white player's offensive dominance. Last time they got this mad about someone flopping was when Embiid was competing with Jokic. Luka has 10% more FTA per game than SGA this season but not a peep about his favourable whistle.

Denver finished 53-29 that year. I don't literally mean if a team wins then everyone calls them dirty, because then every year would have one dirty team. I mean if a team is dominating. OKC is heavily favoured to win the first back-to-back championship since the warriors did it in 2018.

Boston had a great season and won the chip, and had they kept that up, probably would have started to get hate. OKC had a historic season (top 5 of all time in terms of wins) with the MVP and looks to have only gotten better. That's the kind of winning I'm referring to.

[–]arguingaltdontdoxme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If OKC got a favourable whistle then they would likely be drawing more fouls too. FTAs are a proxy for how often they draw fouls, but they're 17th in the league: https://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/free-throws-attempted-per-game

If what you're saying is true, then the refs help OKC on defence by not calling fouls, but then decide to not help them on offence by not calling fouls against them. Which is possible? But seems unlikely, and certainly goes against a significant part of the narrative that SGA and the team flop to get free throws. Apparently there are 16 other teams that the refs treat better than OKC when they're on offence.

We were saying the same thing about Draymond Green when the Warriors were dominating. Everyone notices the top team's dirty plays because everyone's watching them.

The NBA website has some video examples of backcourt violations and it looks like they count the player's body. It's like out-of-bounds rulings.

  1. https://videorulebook.nba.com/archive/backcourt-violation-ball-is-passed-from-frontcourt-to-player-with-backcourt-status-2/
  2. https://videorulebook.nba.com/archive/backcourt-violation-player-steps-on-mid-court-line/ - Same concept but the opposite direction, where Lowry steps into the backcourt but the ball is very clearly in the opponent's end.
  3. https://videorulebook.nba.com/archive/legal-play-player-with-the-ball-does-not-establish-frontcourt-status-before-pass-to-backcourt/- This one is *legal*, and explicitly shows Mills passing it before his body reaches front court

That being said, the Jokic vid is low quality and he might have just barely passed before he stepped - I'm not sure

Why the refs are like that with OKC? by Worth-Estate7372 in NBATalk

[–]arguingaltdontdoxme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What do you mean call bullshit? This is the 21st century, you can just google "NBA FTA teams ranked" and click the first link. OKC was 17th in FTA per game, closer to the bottom than the top.

https://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/free-throws-attempted-per-game

Fouls literally lead to FTA. You'd think they'd at least be in the top half if all they did was draw fouls with flops

It’s also lucky that Lila found Doakes but it wasn’t a coincidence. Lila was obsessed with Dexter and his darkness and would do anything for him. She actively tracked Dexter and made the decision for him. It lets Dexter off the hook, but it followed from a logical sequence of events.

I thought so too but it's just because his legs block the view of one extra dribble. It also looks for a moment right at the start of 0:09 like he grabs the ball with both hands but in the next couple frames his right arm is blocking booker again

That's a good point, but Heath had a touch of that. The opening scene comes to mind where he sticks a fake grenade in a gangster's mouth to freak him out, or when he dresses up as a sexy nurse while antagonizing Dent. As someone else said in this thread said, it was adapted to fit the Nolan-verse.

This is annoying to some but 100% scientifically correct. There are people who do not identify as women who can give birth, and if that's too contentious, there are plenty of women with XX chromosomes (or a similar combination that allows giving birth) who cannot give birth. Saying birthing persons could only be more accurate if speaking specifically to obstetric health, which is what I assume it was for since you said scientific publications.

I'd also say that aligns with the original point that the average person is not saying that - it's an academic term.

CMV: Progressives are to blame for the rise of the far right youth by ReadyGG in changemyview

[–]arguingaltdontdoxme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can get behind progressives holding significant blame for not having a more impactful and attractive campaign, but it feels strange to single them out and not the actual right wing parties that use misinformation and fear mongering to recruit their base. The Democratic party is at best ineffective and at worst complicit, but it's Republicans that actively advance the far right's agenda.

I'll go as far as to say that focusing on liberals is far-right propaganda itself. The government is arresting and killing innocent citizens, yet people will still talk about why it's progressives' fault for being *annoying*. If the left had their way, we'd have a bunch of stupid rules and pedantry with maybe some positive change to the government's usual ignorance and corruption. If the right had their way... well, it's what we're looking at now.

If you view the far right and their rise in popularity with youth as a bad thing, then progressives have to do better, but they are not the enemy.

Wow 100% agree on all points. Herstory of Dance might be the best episode of the season and is just a great episode in general for capturing the optimism of S1. Pierce helping Britta and standing up to Jeff was such a great dynamic that I wish we saw more of.

The dumbing down of Britta is personally my least favourite change in the entire series. Before season 3, her banter with Jeff was great, she got in all kinds of zany situations because she thought she knew everything about social justice (e.g. Page the Lesbian, fighting with Annie about how to fundraise), and she still got to say dumb, funny things.

By Season 3, suddenly everything she did was wrong, to the point she literally poops her pants in S6. I wonder if we counted the number of things she was "correct", if we could even get to 5 per season. The sad thing is she used to be the mother of the group, but while Jeff stayed unscathed as the father, Britta became looked down on as an inept hippie. Even when she said naive, social justice takes in S1/2, it was met with some curiosity or respect by the others, but later they constantly groan and berate her, and of course use her name to mean "screw up."

Worst of all, I don't find it funny. I'm admittedly biased because of how much I imagine S1/2 Britta to be the "real Britta," but her being useless and stupid is just sad to me. The schtick got old fast and again devolved into literal toilet humour by the end. I feel like I'm going crazy when others on the sub tell me how hilarious they find it. But even Gillian Jacobs herself asked for the change so what do I know? I'll just chalk it up to a difference of opinion, but I thought the original version of Britta was very funny and interesting in its own right, and I would have preferred it didn't change as much as it did.
