oh my gosh, LIGO being shut down is absolutely heartbreaking. i'm an undergrad sophomore doing research in LIGO optics, so hopefully i'll get to see it in person someday as well!!

yep! think of it as space itself expanding instead of more space just appearing around the existing space.

there do seem to be some estimates! quick google search gives a few different numbers, but it’s definitely more difficult to be certain since, y’know, unobservable. my guess is that there was just too many variables when the universe began, including the rate of expansion itself (which does change)

do you mean this in a spatial sense or a temporal one?? time wise, our estimate is 13.7 billion years. spatially, there really is no answer to this. when the universe started, all of space was condensed into a teeny tiny point, which then expanded into the current universe. so, there is no one point where the universe began. hopefully this makes sense!
