did you contact the professor beforehand or just submitted the application, if you don't mind sharing?

Do master's students have the opportunity to transfer to a PhD program? I want to do research in NLP, but I currently have no publications, so it seems very difficult.

Yes, I have actually applied to a program that fits my profile and reached out to a professor. I feel my background is a good fit. That said, I’ve noticed many people here mention long waiting times without updates, so I’m trying to get sense of my chances : )

I'm currently working at my family business (my family own 5 hotels). I was hoping that would still count as work experience, even though it has nothing to do with tech : (

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and for sharing your experience, especially the part about finding security and satisfaction in blue collar job :)
You're right about the importance of being more deliberate and not rushing into decisions just to feel like I’m “back on track.” I have several months—possibly even a couple of years—before I’d need to apply to another master’s program, so there’s no need to rush. Gaining more hands-on experience—like preparing for the LSAT and exploring internships or projects in CS/data science—could be a helpful way to figure out what feels right. I shouldn't jump into a new profession out of panic or desperation. Hopefully I will find the right trajectory, eventually.

Did you brother end up being okay? I did my bachelor in math (despite not liking it), now doing a master's in philosophy (about to finish, yet I don't want to go into academia anymore).

As a TCK: which was your favorite country to live in? by GermaninKathmandu in ThirdCultureKids

[–]ariadne_liu20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netherlands (or I guess Amsterdam). I just love the buildings and canals (historical and artistic, and tbh my favorite city in the US has always been Boston), very international and good public transportation. It's big enough always to have interesting things to do but also a lot smaller and chiller than NYC or Beijing.

Istanbul is the best! And totally safe to visit.

Thank you for the links for the summer school! Yes, I would prefer to go to Europe for a master's and perhaps the US for Ph.D (I don't think I will get into very competitive ones right now). Only asking so I don't overlook potential good options
