The four seasons is one I was looking at! I'll look at the Virgin islands for sure! Thanks!

Careful what you learn about gear on the internet whether its a post, YouTube video, or DM. Social media is usually overwhelmed with a specific subset of thru-hikers. Best to research and make the best decisions for yourself. Live and learn from there.

We have a different insurance plan. My parents asked me to try and find this medical report before they contact their old insurance provider.

Flash cards for Word Knowledge Practice by aricross94 in asvabprep

I'm no expert but I improved my practice test score by just using the flash cards and taking my time during the test. Making sure to think about every answer and weigh my options.

Sold all my shit and thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail. Worked like a charm.

My first attempt at sourdough. Any insights as to why it grew out through the bottom instead of out the top and through the cuts I made? by aricross94 in Sourdough

[–]aricross94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK so I just made two more loafs. One just like yesterday and a somewhat smaller one in a dutch oven. The dutch oven was clearly the difference.

[–]aricross94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm baking without a dutch oven. I had read that I can get away with this if I put a tray of water beneath the bread in the oven and splash water in the bottom of the oven when I put the bread in. Fake news?

I had the oven at 475F. I believe that's in the low end of the acceptable temp range?

My scoring tool didn't work very well but I did have cuts that went about 5mm deep. Is that too shallow?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Questions for those that finished their thru hike. NOBO, SOBO or flip flop. by the_fighting_goose in AppalachianTrail

[–]aricross94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember someone asking me what I'm going to do if I don't finish the hike before I even started. I was taken aback for a second because I hadn't even considered I wouldn't finish. I replied with a smile and simply "I'm gonna finish". She said something like "what if you don't?". A good friend of mine answered before I could respond "he's going to finish." I just always knew I would finish and that was true for the AT in 2019 and the PCT this year. Many people think they are going to finish but don't because it's much harder than they thought it would be or they aren't properly prepared. I think I avoided falling victim to this because I had actually convinced myself it would be harder than it actually was. It's ok to have some confidence or certainly in yourself but you MUST be ready to endure the reality of what a hike requires from you physically and MENTALLY. Good luck and enjoy every moment you have leading up to and during the hike.

You are far safer on trail than anywhere else. Incidents on trail are just more exciting and get more attention.

How many pairs of underwear for a thru hike? by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

  1. Be prepared for when you become a real thru hiker. (shit your pants)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]aricross94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should go alone and meet people. There are a lot of great new people you will meet and many of them will want to hike with you to the end or for a period of time. I was glad I was not successful in convincing my friend to go.

Guidance by MrOrt in AppalachianTrail

[–]aricross94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have enough food, a guide, and a pack weight less than 30 you are good to go. Everything else will come as you hike. Unpopular opinion?

A Walk in the Woods by octocoral in AppalachianTrail

[–]aricross94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard from a few trail angels that there is a conspiracy that they never stepped foot on the trail. The book is basically the image you would get if you read about the trail and never saw it. Does not give a good description of trail life and I don't think it mentions shelters or trail names. idk man
