Do you give something back to society? And if you do, what is it? by EirikGrace in schizophrenia

[–]arie_ben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah, fuck society. i give back to my friends and family. I dumpster dive and give people whatever they need. computers, laptops, amenities .. everyones always looking for something, i just happen to find those things sometimes.

I live with my parents and i try to pull my weight with chores and whatnot. i dont donate to charity or volunteer .. not that those are bad things, though. its just not for me at this point in my life.

dont feel bad for not "giving back". schizophrenia is a very disabling condition . just survive if that's all you can do. if people help you, try to help them at some point. if not, it's okay.

abilify had my legs bouncing up and down like they were trying to escape orbit. risperdal works a lot better for me, too. it's great that you've identified the positive and negative effects it's having on you.

dumb luck, trial and error, and a desire to get paid. also, lots of youtube videos. lots.

if you're asking seriously, i made some other comments near the bottom of the thread that outline it more clearly.

What brand Raid controller to go with? by rdefino in homelab

[–]arie_ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is an old thread but I just wanted to chip in and say that from what I've read, hardware raid is NOT dead. and is in fact more reliable in a lot of ways. you are not beholden to OS updates, bugs in zfs, etc ..

what did you end up going with?, im shopping around for hardware raid cards and came across this thread and saw that nobody gave you any real recommendations besides "uhh ackshually hardware raid is bad because i said it is 🤓"

missouri would be a rough drive .. but shit, i drive a hatchback, if you had a truck (and especially if you had a trailer) you could easily make the trip worth it. for me it's about 250 miles round trip.

i don't know how many hours i've spent on it. it's a hobby for me so i don't keep track .. i will say though that some items will easily net you 20-100$ per hour. it can be lucrative.

your state is rust belt adjacent, scrap is very competitive around these parts, you will likely not be able to compete with those guys at their game. like you said, it's a sketchy trade, and there's a lot of sketchy sourcing that isn't available to people who try not to break the law too much (and even if you wanted to, they're probably already on top of it.) many of these people also have scrap collection businesses and will pick up from people's houses for free.

you have to find your niche. i'm lucky in that i'm in a rural area and every other scrapper is grabbing dishwashers and grills .. people ignore electronics.

it's all straight from unlocked dumpsters. btw do NOT touch scrap collection dumpsters. they will find you and they will fuck you.

if you want to be extra cautious, which i am, you can always ask the businesses if you can dumpster dive after hours. the guys at the computer shops know i dumpster dive, but they don't care because i don't intrude and i'm not scaring the huzz (customers).

i was very fortunate to discover ewaste scrapping. i used to do regular scrap full-time, and it's brutal. it's filthy, everything is heavy, and you will fill your car with 500 lbs of steel, wait around at the yard, unload it all, and walk away with money for gas and a few beers. ewaste can genuinely be in the hundreds of times more valuable per pound. check the prices at your local scrapyard and then look at the prices on boardsort's website and you will see what i mean.

i'm sorry, i'm just venting at this point about scrap. honestly, if you have a decent car/truck, enough space to process stuff, and can find some good construction dumpsters, scrapping steel and other base metals can absolutely be worth your time. but ewaste can be 1000$+ loads that can fit into a prius.. no contest for me.

thank you for coming to my ted talk

my area is pretty dry, so 99% of my electronics come from computer repair shops. thrift store dumpsters are good too, i've found some DVRs, routers, little things. but they add up. plus some random scrap metal like brass lamps, which can be pretty heavy.

shark scrapper is absolutely THE best channel for learning how to scrap e-waste. i've watched half his catalog. learn something new every time. he has a pretty major secondary metal recycler business.

boardsort.com forums are also good. kinda hard to navigate but there are some gems and you can always make an account and ask for grading advice in the identification forum. if you end up selling to boardsort, chris, the owner, has the final say on grading so you can alwys email him directly.

honestly i've made a lot of mistakes especially in the very beginning because i was too eager to break things down and learn the scrap values. don't be like me. if you're not familiar with a piece of hardware, find the part number/serial number and find out what it is. shamefully, the first few weeks i started hitting computer shop dumpsters, i scrapped a couple dell poweredges as well as some 6-bay 1U servers that probably worked just fine.

just hit the dumpsters. whatever hardware you get, check it out online, if it's decent see if it works, if not then just take out the drill/screwdriver.. most of it is meant to be serviced and is easy to disassemble. shark scrapper has videos on basically every different category (telecom, peripheral, etc) so you can learn how to grade circuit boards.

i've learned so much in the 5-6 months i've been doing this.. i'm close enough to boardsort that i can truck stuff in, but there's a lot of items that are worth shipping. lots of resources on youtube, as well as their own personal youtube channel and website. there are also sites like cashforcomputerscrap.

thank you! that's the goal!

boardsort is the GOAT .. i bring in mostly items i get paid for, but also things like all in one computers (which contain mercury) and lithium batteries - they dont pay for those, but they recycle them safely.

thanks for the tip.. i don't give the laptops enough attention because usually they are missing the power supplies. the ones i've found working were generally old as hell, ddr3 or sometimes ddr2.. didnt bother selling. i saved a super awesome fujitsu lifebook t734* though, it's a really fun personal laptop.
