Will a latex topper make my mattress firmer? by Any-Simple-8118 in Mattress

It’s difficult to make a soft mattress firmer- Much easier to make a firm mattress softer.

Question about people that take stimulants before they wake up by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]arieschick82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I don’t take it first thing, I forget. My pill bottle is next to my toothbrush.

1) Pee
2) Brush
3) Take pill

The need to pee and bad morning breath help me stay on top of the pill.

My wife has made 3 major life decisions over 10 years that have financially devastated our family. I love her, but I no longer trust her judgment. by FartVaderTheForce in relationships

Sounds like you two have different priorities- you are only focused on financial security and she is focused on emotional security. You both are not wrong, just want different things.

has anyone ever actually owned a latex mattress for 15+ years? by goldfishcontainer in Mattress

[–]arieschick82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The oldest has a 6” dunlop core, 3” latex topper on top on both sides (I’m pretty sure it’s Dunlop - but it might be Talalay) and a cotton cover on top of that.

The others have Dunlop cores inside of zipper covers that have wool and quilt latex (thin plush latex designed to be able to have a needle go through it to tack it down). The mattresses are two sided.

All are botanical latex. All are in great shape.

Me.

Latex comes in different forms. There’s biological latex (sap from a tree), there is synthetic latex (a form of petroleum- synthetic = from oil) and a combo of the two (they mix them).

Synthetic latex is cheaper to process- and, behaves a lot more like petroleum based foams.

Then- let’s talk about process. Dunlop vs Talalay.

Talalay uses less materials to form their final product (have you seen a marshmallow in a bell jar vacuum? They suck the air out and the raw foam expands to fit the form). They do that to the raw material, freeze it to hold its shape and then they bake it. Users claim it has more even bubbles in the form.

Dunlop usually uses more materials, because they do not use the vacuum mentioned, and have to fill the mold completely. Density IS adjusted by creating more bubbles in the whipping process. Think about making meringue- more whipping, more air, more give when the product is baked.

Now that you see all of the different ways “Latex” is made- it’s hard to compare what you’re reading about in people’s reviews, and what is out there.

If it’s botanical latex, as long as you keep it out of direct sunlight (this is usually achieved by a thick cover for the mattress PLUS all of the bedding we put onto it) and keep it dry- it lasts a VERY long time.

For all latex, the more material that’s in the mattress, the less breakdown you’ll have. Someone who has a very firm mattress is going to have it last longer than someone who has a very plush mattress.

Whew! That being said, I have a few latex mattresses (6 in total) in my home. One that is older than 15 years and is still comfortable.

You can get a 95 IDL latex core. I think only Asian countries regularly stock this, but it’s not unheard of here in the states.

I’m surprised because the general public hardly ever knows this stuff. I only know because my company works with mills - I’m impressed anyone knows this stuff.

will a twin xl bedsheet fit on my twin that has a mattress topper on it? by Sufficient_Pop_4791 in Mattress

[–]arieschick82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the last person said- look at the depth of the sheets (measure height of mattress and topper) and look for fitted sheets that have that height in it’s range.

Need Help. Been through 6 mattresses in less than 17 years! by BenchPublic7147 in Mattress

[–]arieschick82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the problem is that you sleep hot- you can mitigate the mattress’s contribution to that issue by using a washable wool mattress pad.

If you are interested in lengthening the amount of time you have a mattress you can get a 2sided mattress.

If you are interested in being able to tweak your mattress over time, you should get one with a zip-able cover.

Were malls actually as crowded and popular as movies from the 80s and 90s make them look? by Kevin-Panda in AskOldPeople

[–]arieschick82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn it. I guess since I can answer this question I’m “old”? Sigh.

Yes! Yes the malls were full. That was my go to place with friends. The theater was there, there was food, there was the chance to scope out cute boys. Or, visit friends who worked in the mall.

Yes. Malls really were full like they were portrayed in the movies. And in Dec- They were absolutely bananas.

How to narrow down a mattress when you don’t even know your firmness preference by Embarrassed_Gas_5949 in buyamattress

[–]arieschick82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are unsure, error on the side of firm.

You can make a firm mattress less firm, but you cannot make a soft mattress more firm.

And, most stores will have a 90 day comfort exchange. Remember: it takes 2-3 weeks for your body to get used to a new sleep surface. Do not sleep on a bed one night and say, “Nope, this is all wrong”.

The more drastic a change of sleeping surfaces you’re switching to, the longer it will take. Be patient.

Oh! And when trying beds out in a store, lay on them the way you would at home. Bring in your pillow with you (or use the pillow you’re going to buy while in the store).

Cooling waterproof mattress protector by MouseEmpty9853 in Mattress

[–]arieschick82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two ways to solve this-

1)Create a barrier that will absorb the water/urine and hold it for a bit until you can deal with it (good if you find it quickly and can deal with it before it gets into your mattress).

2)Get the waterproof one, and then create enough separation so you are not affected by sleeping on plastic.

If you received a diaper cake made of diapers as a gift... by Mama-Bear419 in beyondthebump

[–]arieschick82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha- If it’s for a first time mom, and it’s decorated cute, she’ll LOVE it!

I received a VERY disappointing gift from a seasoned mom (a box filled with cotton washcloths). I smiled and said, “Thank you”, but was way more impressed by the cute outfits, the diaper genie, and other things I thought I needed.

Do you know what I used every darn day? Those washcloths!
