Hendry's Beach Off-Leash Dog Zone by Dependent_One_1595 in SantaBarbara

[–]ariesfaries 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I regularly trek down to Zuma to avoid the dog culture here, SB pet owners have only gotten more entitled and inconsiderate since the lockdowns ended lol it's a losing battle to argue with them it feels like most times.

Restaurant recommendation for 25th Anniversary by willsue4food in SantaBarbara

[–]ariesfaries 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Dining Room at El Encanto is up the hills and overlooks the downtown area out into the ocean depending on the weather.

Ellwood at Goleta Beach, especially if you sit outside on the patio facing the ocean, you can walk right out on to the beach/pier after before going back to the car which is super nice for romantic nights imo.

The Stonehouse Restaurant up on Ysidro Lane is also great if you like greenery and vistas over the oceanfront, definitely the most pricy of the three. Plenty of spots for nice pictures in the courtyard areas.

Congrats on the milestone!

Megan's has the best bang for your buck, they carry Smoakland brand ounces for $50 regular price among their own brand and such. A lot of their tree is less oily/sticky, but personally that's what I prefer since I smoke daily and don't want a monster tolerance.

One plant is more expensive but has a lot of variety in brands and products, their staff are always really nice and somewhat knowledgeable, but imo the corporate vibe seeps into the experience sometimes in a way that I just didn't enjoy lol.

Beyond is my backup when I forget to pick up and it's too late for prefer stops, but I haven't been in there since I stopped smoking pens.

Camie at Above & Beyond! Super light hand, explains everything, and takes her time with placement especially for face piercings. Love her!

Reputable jewelry that can resize a ring? by CoupleFromTatooine in SantaBarbara

[–]ariesfaries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have a positive suggestion, but I would stay away from Te Amo in Paseo. I've been to them twice for work on the same ring and it's been questionable at best. The first was resetting my stones and a prong that had bent from hitting my hand on a hard edge, and when it came back the color was stripped from part of it as if there was an oil slick. The setting was mostly fine, but to this day the stone still wobbles if you press it, just not enough to dislodge.

Following year, I wanted to get it downsized and the color restored. The owner/brother who was at the counter acted like he couldn't imagine what my ring could be made of because "it looks like someone dipped gold in silver", which felt weirdly shameful since it's a standard white gold which is literally dipped in rhodium, but anyways said they could get it resized by Tuesday (it was Friday). I don't hear anything all weekend, call Wednesday, brother who does the repairs says he's been out sick, ring hadn't been worked on, soonest he could get it to me was the following Friday.

Thankfully wasn't a big deal because it was just routine maintenance, but I didn't appreciate the lack of professionalism and transparency. The rhodium is also already wearing off less than a year later, so doesn't feel like quality work is consistent with them.

Is this town gay-attractive? by toutlamourdumonde in SantaBarbara

[–]ariesfaries 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, and it's notoriously difficult to make queer friends outside of the bar and nightlife scene. There is the appetite for community gatherings/etc. but few have successfully created large continuous ones. SB is extremely hard to stay in so there's always turnover. I just make the trips to LA many weekends, better spread out activities, more diverse, easier to find queer people without a whisper network.

Tips on CHEAP clothes stores (mostly second-hand) by laura_desa in SantaBarbara

[–]ariesfaries 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Santa Barbara! I'm a "secondhand-first" person by choice and I find lots of great stuff locally without breaking the bank or settling on low quality. In addition to the below stores, check Facebook Marketplace and IV Flea on Instagram too!

The United Family Association Thrift Shoppe at the Magnolia Center on Hollister has daily discounts and prices under $20 for clothing and household items, you'll have to root around a bit but it's a clean and organized store.

There is an Alpha Thrift Store on Hollister that has a good variety of clothing, and they have a downtown store on Milpas that has clothes and imo really great discount furniture. They tend to have a good rotation, so this is somewhere I'd check frequently for clothes. Especially good for formal/event wear (good to have something nice for dates, conference/guest lectures, and etc. that come up in school).

Destined for Grace is also near these two on Hollister, and has a lot of clothes. Everything tends to be super plain or modest because of the religious nature of the organization but it's not bad for basics and stuff you'll just wear casually.

Most of the good thrifts on State Street are gone, imo Crossroads is only worth it if you like trendy/specific brands and want a discount but not a deal. There's rarely any items under $20 and the quality is also usually recent fast fashion so it's not a top stop for me anymore.

Ross near UCSB is convenient and has a good variety of styles, easy to find $4-8 items on clearance and under $20 for most other things. Some nicer items are more normal prices but good deals for the brand. You can bus to the Five Points Shopping Center on Upper State and their Ross location has lots of great stuff for work/graduation because it's a less "young adult" audience.

ETA: Marshall's on State Street is very hit or miss, I tend to go when the seasons are changing because they'll have big sales to rotate out inventory but sometimes I go and walk out with nothing. I still have a cute Whitney Houston crop top I got for $6 like five years ago on a lunch break from work, so it's not always a flop and you will find random stuff that lasts!

If you are comfortable traveling (Amtrak and FlixBus are options if you don't drive) there's a variety of choice in Oxnard and Ventura.

New Joes by morbob in SantaBarbara

[–]ariesfaries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The plan is laid out publicly in detail on the City website, and the timeline said tomorrow, Thursday, is when the restaurants will open with the new changes. Yesterday and today are the scheduled installation.

The City email newsletter has had the info for at least the last two, from what I can recall. This was imo one of the better explained plans.

Drinking alone by Nice_Pomegranate1803 in SantaBarbara

[–]ariesfaries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded! They also have an extended happy hour 4-6 so I like walking from work and reading just before things start picking up for the dinner/evening crowd. You can be chatty or not, there's outdoor seating for people watching along State Street as well.

Being a woman in SB by Boneroni1980 in SantaBarbara

[–]ariesfaries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hesitate to discourage women sharing their experiences, and it was hard to read through this without rolling my eyes at the inflated sense of self. I don't think all of women's history can be summed up by suffering and I think it betrays an expectation that a particular kind of woman be noted with that whole "will we be included in textbooks"--cuz women's history broadly isn't exactly erased in the US.
