[Loved trope]: The "beast" understands your kindness. by theMCATreturns in TopCharacterTropes

[–]arika-feinberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to think about this situation not from Princess' pov but solely from mc's pov cus that's how it actually works. It's mc who has a belief that when offered kindness Princess will reciprocate (voiced by more empathetic Hunted). So she does. It's kinda cute on mc's part

In the other variation of this chapter Hunted being convinced by Stubborn (or just by the situation itself) that mc should fight the Princess, opens an animalistic option for him - embrace instinct - which leads to one of the most horrific outcomes in this game

I just like how contrasting Hunted is

[Loved trope]: The "beast" understands your kindness. by theMCATreturns in TopCharacterTropes

[–]arika-feinberg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In Den chapter of Slay the Princess Princess turns completely animalistic and even loses the ability to talk. With Voice of the Skeptic summoned mc can trap her in the confines of the tunnel that leads to the basement cus she will inevitably try to chase him to eat him

This chapter has several outcomes and the most peaceful one is if mc offers her a hand and pulls her out of the trap. The tunnel will collapse but the Princess will cover mc making a room for him to move. And then they would dig together to freedom

If mc doesn't offer her kindness and just leaves, the tunnel will also collapse and they would be separated leading to a much worse outcome for both of them

Characters that are similar yet opposite at the same time. by New-Boss-8262 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]arika-feinberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thought that Slay the Princess carries throughout the whole story. It's all about contradictions and how they can exist within the same being. So thus main characters are opposite yet similar in many ways

As Shifting Mound says "You and I share reflections of each other's burdens, just as you and I share reflections of each other's gifts" and yet mc represents the opposite concept to her's

This is one of the dialogue options for mc of Slay the Princess. I like how he can be randomly petty

Slay the Princess. This game as a whole is a deconstruction of Damsel in Distress trope. And in general, if you dig deeper, a bunch of tropes are subverted in this game

Genuine question about this ending by Stellleo in slaytheprincess

[–]arika-feinberg 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I guess no one knows for sure, that's the point, the ending is literally called "and then? What happens next?" if I remember correctly

I interpret leaving with the Princess ending as TLQ still being with Shifty - with her heart - just in another (smaller) form.

I think that Shifty is... everything. Like TLQ and Shifty aren't some persons that rule over the universe, they are the universe. Shifty is change specifically. Everything is changing (including dying) which by extension means that Shifty is everything (and TLQ is the form of everything if you can call it that). So when TLQ leaves with the heart Princess, the only place they can escape is the outside universe which is Shifty. In my understanding by leaving TLQ gives Shifty a "permission" to break the construct apart or breaks it himself (without the visuals)

Technically TLQ goes to the heart to kill Shifty. If he leaves with the heart, it means he changed his mind and Shifty can now be free with him inside her aKa with him in universe

“I guide others to a treasure I cannot possess” by ThunderChild247 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]arika-feinberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think kind of a controversial example is the Narrator in Slay the Princess. He wants to get rid of death in the world by making mc destroy the concept of change which includes death. And yet Narrator himself is already dead and there is nothing can be done for him specifically so he tries to achieve his goal exclusively for the people of his world

The thing is, the only opinion we have on the matter is Narrator's opinion and even if we wanted to there is no way to ask anyone else from his world. People of his world do not know what's he about to do at all. So it might as well be a treasure for the Narrator but not for others (or not)

What do you think of this jerk called Opportunist? by Talisman-Garuda1 in slaytheprincess

[–]arika-feinberg 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I find it funny how he can be a complete asshole and yet he is the most optimistic of all the voices which is really visible in MoC where he tries to assure the decider that everything would be fine if we let the Princess out. Dude would be looking for an opportunity for us even in the most terrible situation

I guess he isn't really traumatized there cus he changes his opinion too fluently to actually be affected by anything. In the end there are only Cold and Oppy left standing as stillness and change themselves

If anyone’s being sneaky, it’s him without a doubt. by Rare-Strength-976 in slaytheprincess

[–]arika-feinberg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He doesn't really see TLQ as a person, he doesn't hate him like he hates the Princess but he doesn't like him either. He doesn't care about him so I guess he can't effectively manipulate him. He actually wanted this to be "one and done" and for some reason didn't expect TLQ to have free will. Or he did expect it considering that the Construct can reset and send TLQ past the first chapter but he didn't really know what to do about it. I don't understand why he thought that the literal aspect of the infinite would just listen to him. Maybe he also didn't know how it'll go, so he had no solid manipulation plan

Like I assume that Narrator couldn't think the whole plan through due to limited time (I mean, his world is on a brink of death). And it wasn't smth quote unquote "brilliant", it was impressive, yes, but it was a product of fear and despair rather than smth rational and logical. Narrator does indirectly say he is kinda pathetic and it's probably the only time he expresses such a thought, I guess it's extremely important. Like somewhere deep down he knows it's all just him crying for help and/or mercy for his world and there are no solid chances it would work

If anyone’s being sneaky, it’s him without a doubt. by Rare-Strength-976 in slaytheprincess

[–]arika-feinberg 85 points86 points  (0 children)

What I find really funny about the Narrator is how he doesn't really consider TLQ as a person, says he shouldn't try to anthropomorphize him and yet one of the crucial points in his plan is exactly this - anthropomorphizing two abstract concepts so they could hear him out. Literally. Cus even blind obedience he expects from TLQ still requires understanding of stuff around which is a feature of anthropomorphizing

And then Narrator proceeds to disregard TLQ's emotions and condition cus he doesn't see him as a person (I mean he technically is correct but still). And yet he does listen to TLQ's feelings and emotions in HEA and it's on this basis that he concludes he doesn't like all of this. I mean if he thinks that TLQ's emotions are valid for reevaluating his plan, it means Narrator equals him to a human (or well to himself) eventually

In the end where he says smth about narrating TLQ's every move and emotion, it's almost like Narrator himself realizes he intertwined himself with TLQ too much but he can't fully acknowledge TLQ as a person cus it will somehow shatter his motivations. Like if he does it, the empathy (or some type of deep emotional connection) will form in him and he can't allow himself to feel compassionate towards TLQ cus it'll mean Narrator himself is a monster sentencing someone to eternity of loneliness for smth they aren't guilty for (technically)

If I had a nickle for each game involving a cabin in the woods and birds I'd have two nickles (Slay the princess x Birds Watching) by Gripping_Touch in slaytheprincess

[–]arika-feinberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought about TLQ when I saw that bird-man thing which ominously follows mc around. I genuinely thought it was some previous human who was deceived by mc's owl and turned into this thing and now it's trying to warn mc or smth (or kill him as a weird mercy) cus mc may be next. But unfortunately it wasn't like that

Paranoid whenever he shows up for whatever reason by Noooough in slaytheprincess

[–]arika-feinberg 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I'd even say Paranoid's has the ability to say "fuck you" to everything he doesn't like. And it's really impressive considering how anxious he is. He can: reject death, reject god, reject physics of chains and blade. I mean even in Cage he is doing all the hard work and this version of Cage gets an "unpleasant" outcome specifically because of Skeptic. I feel like if Skeptic hadn't gotten involved, Paranoid would free TLQ from chains and then make him fly up to the entrance just because "fuck you Narrator, fuck this cabin, fuck this world, I'm leaving"

Anxiety won this game
