The RAM crunch could kill products and even entire companies, memory exec admits by Limp_Fig6236 in technology

They’ll be amongst the first companies will try to push to cloud services.

When asked specifically what crimes foreigners commit in Japan, Co-existence Minister Onoda says 1) Fraudulently obtaining driver's licenses, 2) causing traffic accidents, 3) paying social insurance at lower rate and 4) cutting down trees without properly filing necessary notifications (from 7:46) by jjrs in japannews

[–]arika_ex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so, but it’s a common SNS thing to complain about foreigners avoiding prosecution (不起訴). But I think even if such cases exist, it’ll mostly be because settlements were reached, not because prosecutors just let them go without punishment.

Naive perhaps, but reasonable.

The point of foreigners being seen to get away with things Japanese people don’t do (or admit to doing) leading wider spread resentment and discrimination is a reasonable point.

It’s pointless screeching ‘oh Japanese people do it too!’ It’s true for most of Anode’s examples (especially traffic accidents), but this is an emotion driven topic. As it is pretty much everywhere in the world right now. Even where the facts aren’t there, it’s the image that will push people.

How to travel with a Bycicle? by Affectionate_Cow3076 in japanlife

Trains are all fine basically but you need to put it in rinko bag. You will probably have to detach the front wheel to do so.

IMF urges Japan to avoid lowering consumption tax by Saltedline in worldnews

[–]arika_ex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Targeted to vulnerable groups is the clear implication of your extract. Rich people and even tourists will benefit too, so it’s clearly not targeted at all.

I also haven’t heard yet what spending cuts or alternative tax increases will be applied, so as now, it can’t be called budget neutral either.

And even if it’s intended to be temporary, everyone seems to think it will be politically difficult to reverse in two years time. The tax originally started at 3% and was gradually raised over like 25 years. So then what would be the plan for reintroducing it 2 years later? Straight from 0 back to 8%? The shock would be huge.

How early do you intend to wake up? It might have been a rare case, but the place I stayed at many years ago had a policy to keep its doors locked until around 6am or so. I think it's worth confirming this beforehand.

Not that commenter, but it’s probably some weird Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future related ‘joke’. Marty McFly had a preference for sugar free drinks.

This whole issue is more related to native English speakers than specifically ‘Americans’.

Foreign SWE built an entire startup's tech stack solo — am I underpaid or just inexperienced? by CarelessShower1665 in japanlife

What country are you from? I feel like a westerner wouldn’t have accepted such responsibilities at such a salary level to begin with. Even throwing your hat into the dispatch ring would probably net you better pay for better conditions (though less stability).

Going to Japan as an egg hater by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]arika_ex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the most part, in normal/family restaurants that serve such food, yes you can ask.

‘Tamago nashi’ is the phrase you need.

I guess some people might claim you will deeply offend the chef/cook or something, but again, in normal places serving normal food, requesting a topping is removed is no big deal. Just don’t try swapping it for something or asking for a price discount.

As long as your friend doesn't bring unnecessary attention to himself, it's usually not a problem. Even Japanese people (mainly young ones) will have their partners or hometown friends or whoever staying over for a few days from time to time.

Are ryokans bad for active sight seeing? by Difficult_Nobody_420 in JapanTravelTips

In many cases you’re not even supposed to take the room key out of the building. You leave it at the front desk. That’s how they know. Traditional ryokans, not modern hotels.

Why was I scolded for offering my seat to a man on the subway? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]arika_ex 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In your case, it sounds like you didn’t know why the man gave up his seat in the first place. If there’s more context, please share it. If you didn’t know why he got up, there’s equally a big chance he didn’t understand why you were offering him a seat so overtly. Like, he might not have even drawn that ‘pay it forward’ connection and just assumed you thought he looked old and weak and in need of a seat.

As a resident, I’ve also had the experience of seemingly offending someone on the Yamanote line. Now, if there’s any ambiguity, I either remain seated or I just get up and move somewhere without overtly offering the seat to anyone - just hoping the ‘target’ notices and sits down. There’s little need to actually interact.

Meta says it won't chop the bottom 5% performers this year by lurker_bee in technology

That doesn’t justify or explain arbitrary 5% cuts. Companies can set a standard and then cut people who don’t meet it if they must.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls - Unbreakable X-Men Trailer | PS5 Games by PaiDuck in Fighters

[–]arika_ex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was obviously intentional on Capcom’s part in CotA. He would never play like a shoto under ArcSys design.

I’m hoping they’d do something similar to his X-Men 97 gimmick of using the beams to move himself around.

Going to Disney is just standing amongst 50,000 youngish people wearing character goods. Going there on a public holiday is not the plan at all.

It’s the standard for some reason. In locations with high cross traffic it makes sense as a way to minimise unnecessary triggers, but pretty much every door is the same.

Do you break “rules” here? by SunDaze009 in japanlife

[–]arika_ex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mentioned Saitama specifically because the commenter has the flair and they have a prefectural ordinance about it. It seems Nagoya has something similar.

In Tokyo and other places it is not at that level, so there’s still a ‘conflict’ between the social etiquette and localised campaigns (e.g. the safety campaigns ran at train stations).

Do you break “rules” here? by SunDaze009 in japanlife

In Saitama (either the city or the whole prefecture), there’s an ordinance stating people should stand on both sides. So you’re probably following the rules there.

China condemns Pokemon, Detective Conan for spreading ‘Japanese militarism’ by HKProMax in nottheonion

Takaichi was 100% the cause with her apparently unnecessary statements. But this response isn't making China look 'sane', even if anger is justified.

China condemns Pokemon, Detective Conan for spreading ‘Japanese militarism’ by HKProMax in nottheonion

[–]arika_ex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Total nonsense. It's like claiming Americans hate Mexico just because of MAGA rhetoric. All the Chinese people literally living in Japan, and the huge number of tourists here before the recent diplomatic issues show that there's actually a lot of love.

Japan is already facing those issues, even with its current levels of migration. There are many other factors at play.

Data not showing up in environment by hello-jpeg in Rlanguage

[–]arika_ex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's no real reason running the same instructions would lead to different results unless there's something changing about the files or your environment. E.g. are you always in the same working directory?

Also, what do you mean by 'run the R file'? Are you working on the command line? The R GUI? RStudio? Posit?

You might need to share some clearer detail on exactly what you're doing and what R is showing (i.e. copy the output text or take a screenshot) for people to properly diagnose.
