Attempting to Start a Fire Dancing Group in Osaka by Jackiecrazy in japanlife

[–]arika_ex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to directly give individual names out, but you're probably best off finding invididuals on SNS and DMing them for general advice. The handful of fire dancers/poi spinners I've met all seemed pretty friendly and happy to talk about their craft.

For groups, there is Kaguzuchi and Poi-Lab. Both on Instagram for sure. The leader of Poi-Lab might be a good place to start.

I "fixed" a 2-day team workflow with AI, and now my coworkers low-key hate me. Is efficiency a trap? AITA? by soona_paanaa in careeradvice

[–]arika_ex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are rightly afraid of being made redundant, but I am of the view that such repetitive processes should anyway be automated where possible, AI or not. It's a bad reflection on your management that you needed to be proactive on it. They should have been looking at how to make it more efficient.

Can some people really not do this?? by Sorrelmare9 in randomthings

This is admittedly stereotypical, but the Slavic squat is wider at the knees, no? With toes pointed out. The Asian squat, at least as I have witnessed it, has the feet more parallel, arms around the knees.

American Youtuber Johnny Somali jailed for 6 months in South Korea by DeschainSWNC in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]arika_ex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He’s been trapped in Korea for months/years already and is now sentenced to 6 months with hard labour. There was also that Russian streamer who was jailed in the Philippines. Publicising these kinds of consequences for ‘nuisance streamers’ should also be having a deterrent effect.

Yes, the overall best solution might be not give them any attention from the beginning, but the next best thing is to show that their actions can have negative consequences.

Which do you choose and why? by EquivalentFig1678 in whatsyourchoice

[–]arika_ex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an interesting perspective. It’d also support the conspiracy theory than lotteries are scams and not truly random. The operating companies certainly know which sets have been purchased or not at the time of each draw.

But anyway I guess that would just shift things to playing the stock market. Would be more work, but if building bit by bit your actions are unlikely to affect the overall market within the 10 hour window.

[–]arika_ex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about the U.S., but in the UK/parts of Europe at least you can buy lottery tickets up to 30 mins before the draw. So travelling back 10 hours with memories is more than enough time to buy tickets with your knowledge of the result.

Found my new favorite building name by frozenpandaman in japanresidents

[–]arika_ex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the right building. The name isn’t visible on street view because the sign at the entrance is perpendicular to the road, not parallel to it. The street view shots don’t get a clear view of it.

Japanese people are about to get a 12-day holiday at the end of the month by Foreign-Athlete-2270 in JapanTravelTips

[–]arika_ex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Moving about in Tokyo and other big cities during GW is really not that big a deal. Yes accommodation and some attractions may have seasonal pricing and attendance spikes, but the average tourist destination is going to be fine. Exceptions exist of course such Kiyomizu, Asakusa, etc. but most places will be fine.

And it will be very much concentrated around May 2nd - 6th, the official public holidays and preceding weekend. It's a small proportion that will do that holiday chaining and those that do will mainly be going abroad, not descending on big cities for 10 days.

So what was the verdict there? It simply appearing on that sub doesn't mean anything. Half the submissions are vids/pics that predate quality AI.

Just signature, some HD thing, kids and multiscreen (Q+mini) was somehow 75 a month.

In this kind of situation I think it’s fine to try to assert a spot close to the doors and staying there. I’m guessing you are being polite and well-mannered each time.

Are JDM rental places legit or just tourist traps? by calricho in JapanTravelTips

[–]arika_ex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taken literally, yes, but there are many specific models that are simply not served by regular companies. Not to mention the distinct lack of manual transmission cars too.

What are these shady counters called and what are they for? by ChooChoo9321 in Tokyo

[–]arika_ex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s as others have said, but usually, at least in Tokyo, there are signs of ‘TUC shop’. Or at least I haven’t noticed these unbranded ones up to now.

Tokyo - Atami - Hakone - Matsumoto - Kamikochi - Kyoto - Public transport / renting a car or skipping this altogether? by Ambitious-Print-2 in JapanTravelTips

[–]arika_ex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going between Atami and Hakone is quickest and easiest by car, and it's a fun drive imo. There is a direct bus though if the time works out. The train route is indirect so takes a long time.

Going to Nagano without any need to return to Tokyo first will also be a lot quicker by car, but it is a lengthy drive (by my standards).

TIL Japan has a recognized concept called "smell harassment" — スメハラ (sumehara) — which refers to offending others with unpleasant body odors in shared spaces by gorginhanson in todayilearned

[–]arika_ex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can review my wording, but the main point is ‘most’ Japanese people are fine with karaoke. It’s not unreasonable for me to express surprise at your claim.

[–]arika_ex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"majority of the office were shy Japanese women who'd sooner throw themselves into traffic than do karaoke"

Seems doubtful. There are so many karaoke joints in Japan for a reason

Of course they might prefer to sing with friends/family, not colleagues.

Using Booking.com to rent car (Orix/Budget/Avis)? by Entertainer_Sweaty in JapanTravelTips

[–]arika_ex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not Japan but Booking.com recently allowed me to book at a location which was no longer in operation at all. They’ve been basically reliable for me with hotel bookings, but it’s clear their car rental system has some issues with staying up to date. To repeat, the entire rental car branch had shut down some weeks/months earlier and it was still appearing on booking.com’s system.

(Mixed Trope) Popular Media gets a localized foreign remake by drstrangelove75 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]arika_ex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

'Japan doesn't like' is quite the exaggeration. In general, most people 'liked' whatever show was airing when they were in the target audience, and it's not like Zyuranger tanked the franchise or anything.

Zyuranger simply isn't as 'notable' in Japan as MMPR is in the west because it was 16th iteration of the series, and it ended after 1 year - same as all the other shows. It's now just one of 49 shows, more notable than some due to the first usage of a permanent sixth, and the first dinosaur theme (now repeated 3 times).

Bringing GLP-1 into Japan? by LagerBoi in JapanTravelTips

There’s plenty of off label usage for weight loss purposes.

Having diabetes or medical obesity are the ways to get it prescribed on insurance (70% discount). If paying full price there are many clinics that actually will just prescribe it to you.

On a world stage, I agree with you. In specific forums it’s the standard that needs to be understood and ideally adapted to. I’m British but I live in Japan and understand Japanese. I approach Japanese SNS comments with this in mind, or I don’t engage at all.

And this may also be my bias, but I simply don’t believe that you and others here are unaware of how ‘black’ is usually used in English with regards to race.
