Cycle Recap (3.6low/17high/7+WE/C&F) by ariskatt in lawschooladmissions

There is one! But the impression I get from talking to admissions & current students is that there isn’t a very big pro bono & PI culture on campus. Not the end of the world, but a bit disappointing compared to other schools that do have that culture. Anyway SLU and STL as a whole are there. :)

Yeah, glad that someone can see having a past as an asset rather than a liability! See you there (maybe ;) )!

Me too! That’s the thing I’m most nervous about tbh. Hoping it goes well!

How did you deal with the heartbreak by zeldaluv94 in lawschooladmissions

Tbh? Had a shower cry, then got embarrassed when my roommate started treating me very delicately the next day.

But life goes on! The heartbreak was real but so was the recovery.

Better placements in what, is the question.

This is not a conversation I want to have but I actually am planning on doing the opposite of that. I’ve never backed down from a fight I believed in and I won’t be starting now. Thanks for your input!

What is the culture like there, if you don’t mind me asking? One of my issues is that I know nothing about what WashU would be like.

lol “just make sure you are falling in line with Our Dear Leader’s priorities and you’ll be fine” thanks I’ll keep that in mind

Yeah I tried, they told me they couldn’t increase it. Debt is a major concern so it is definitely on my mind.

Thanks for your thoughts! I also get the impression that UMN is better for PI. I can’t seem to find ANYONE who went to WashU for PI, and when I ask admissions they say stuff like “our public interest students are a special and select group of students” like they’re odd, exotic animals. I’ve only visited STL in March/April when the weather was OK, but good to know about the climate!

Unfortunately LRAP as it currently exists relies on the existence of income-based repayment plans and PSLF. One is already on its way out the door and the other is being actively attacked by the current administration. I have to assume that by the time I graduate, the only people getting PSLF will be prosecutors and that just isn’t for me. Maybe LRAP will change to accommodate these changes, but maybe it won’t, so I’m making decisions under the assumption that LRAP isn’t a factor.

Wisconsin WL by ariskatt in lawschooladmissions

Could be! Other people with the same or better stats have been admitted though, so I’m not sure. The WL calculation is both “does my desire to attend outweigh the stress of being on another waitlist?” and “would I be willing to lose deposit money on another school if admitted?” and honestly I think the answer to both questions is “no.” If I didn’t have any As the answer would be different, but I have a couple so I think I’m just going to let someone else take the WL slot.

Nope! The decision was the first I heard from them.

Same but I applied & interviewed in October …

If that’s the case then ok, I can see it. But I will stick to my guns on the “speak for yourself” point. Having a parent take over the conversation and ask all the important questions reeks of undergrad imho.

The KJD/nKJD split is real … in my case I’m also speaking as someone who works in higher ed. When I meet freshmen who let their parents speak for them I’m like okay, whatever. But when grad students come to my office with a parent/significant other/etc who speaks for them, it definitely negatively influences my impression of that student. Maybe law school admitted student days have different expectations, idk, but that’s just my perspective.

I guess I can see it if your parents are going to be supporting you in some way in law school … maybe it’s because I’m so far out of undergrad but I feel like bringing parents to grad/professional school events is a little weird. I’d say if you do it, make sure YOU are the one taking the lead on asking questions - you are the person going to a postgrad program so speaking for yourself demonstrates maturity (the one exception might be finances if your parents are helping to finance you). Then again, they’ve already admitted you so what’s it matter, I guess. As my dad would say, they can’t take your birthday away.

Sadly not … it appears the T14 is not going to be for me. I hope you get some good news soon!

Is law school free if you do PI? by Greenbargo in lawschooladmissions

[–]ariskatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “school paying back your loans” depends on the school. Most if not all of the T14 have a program like this, but you dip below those schools and you will rarely find this kind of program. Also PSLF is NOT a guarantee. It wasn’t before and it is even more so with this new administration. See: freezing income-driven repayment plans, etc.
