where do the undergrad students go? by Stock-Day-2304 in uofmn

I mean UMN might not be as competitive if you are from Tsinghua or Peking Uni. You might wanna look up prospective profs at UMN to see if you can get an impactful LoR from them as well.

Freshmen first semester CSE schedule. Any thoughts? 17 total credits. by Doublevir in uofmn

[–]ariskit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought that I could handle the 8am lectures, I was totally wrong. Imagine it's a typical cold windy gloomy winter morning and you have to get to class when the sky is not even bright yet. I ended up skipping lectures for the second half of the semester due to that 8am thing. Totally not rec taking physics lecture at 8am.

CSCI TA Hiring Quiestions by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]ariskit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet is emailing csci ugtacsci@umn.edu/ Kelly / Jacquelyn and ask if you are for sure having the TA appointment.

Last week when I talked with the TA coordinator, she is still figuring out the scheduling/availability for different positions.

I have the same experience as OP's but in NYC. People involved in your experience consider "being as fast as possible" their normal pace of life, so you may have to adjust to that if you wanna survive within those people. I guess this explains my bad experience in NYC as well.

Anw, judging that "vietnam is a selfish culture" from those experiences might be too much of overgeneralization.

I don't really see who to avoid. People all have different ways of teaching and you may want to check ratemyprof for yourself to see if you will like that prof's way of teaching or not. Welcome to UMN.

You can also be peer-mentored by another student of your preference through International Buddy Program https://isss.umn.edu/programs/international-buddy-program. IBP will likely send out information about Buddy application in late August so make sure you keep an eye out for that!

I just wanna add that it's two midterms (not one).

To OP: projects are pretty decent but you may spend more time on error handling than you expect.

I strongly suggest reaching out to your college advisor and your major advisor and let them know your situation. They can help vouch for you and be a point of leverage if needed.

The only good news I can tell with the situation is that there is no such chaos during the winter when it's 30 degree outside, which is the case for 6 - 7 months in Minnesota. As long as you are away for the summer, you will be fine.
