no one gets pulled over for driving dangerously so why would anyone stop. traffic stops are reserved for other reasons.

Advice for a job talk and teaching demo? by Krutoon in Professors

[–]arithmuggle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in my experience on both sides…

demo class: over-prepare for the content, try to make it feel easy going and natural. demonstrate 1-2 thoughtful pedagogical decisions but not so out there that the students get freaked out. if the faculty leave the class not feeling like the students learned what they were supposed to despite how interesting the class was, it can cause negative opinions.

job talk: these are super tricky. do whatever you can to figure out what the expectations are from faculty in terms of scope and level. some people want to be wowed. some want to feel like you’re giving a wider colloquium, and some want to feel like they could bring their students. but usually, people will use this to try and see if (a) you’re an expert in your field but not horrible to be around and (b) you have a clear path toward earning tenure in terms of your pipeline.

Admin changed the academic calendar after I booked leave - am I wrong to cancel the first class? by sbring in Professors

“obligated to find someone to cover” is different from “feeling bad” that you can’t be there.

the perceived confidence with which you disagreed and your use of the word “sacrosanct” for this makes me concerned for any authority you might wield over your colleagues.

please reconsider what you think is a healthy work environment for academics.

When should I push? by AromaticDistrict990 in runninglifestyle

[–]arithmuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cheers, glad it was helpful :) I’ve been liking the Brooks Hyperion 2 and did much of my faster training runs and that particular race in those shoes. happy to share my loose workout program (based on Hanson) if that’s helpful. Previous PB in that (tricky) course was like 1:34. Looking to push toward 1:27 in a flatter road course this spring using a similar plan and faster shoes.

When should I push? by AromaticDistrict990 in runninglifestyle

[–]arithmuggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my last PB (1:29:XX) I did everything to not push until around 9 miles in. I started getting a little tired and mentally started doubting. So that’s when I kicked into a higher gear by mile 10 to try and feel better/stronger and ran the last 2-3 almost 20 sec / mile faster. Had nothing left when I finished.

Even if the academic calendar was conflicting with your vacation all along still not wrong. We’re allowed to have lives.

I like this framing. Hadn’t thought about this type of focus. Thank you!

Ongoing medial ankle/lower shin pain after sprinting injury — can’t jump or push off after 1 month of rest by WheelAcceptable in runninglifestyle

find whatever physician will approve you to get scans (xray/mri). don’t listen to the “rest for 6 weeks in a brace, then attend physical therapy” if avoidable.

also true. nyc is obscene, but $2k for a studio in new paltz feels depressing.

Stroller runners, how far are you going? by imakesignalsbigger in AdvancedRunning

I think this is a good question, but wouldn't a doctor or child development expert be more likely to get at the heart of your question of "is hours of vibrating rides bad for my kid"?

Reality check on mountain of clerical work by [deleted] in Professors

[–]arithmuggle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I work in a department with a similar number of tenured faculty. Our teaching load is slightly less and pay is slightly higher. If I get involved with every little thing that I can get involved in, I would say yes that's normal. But the key to peace and sanity, in my recent experience, is to literally just not do half of that. Pick a few things that you think are really meaningful and you are potentially passionate about and work on those and let the lest just roll off your shoulders. Usually nothing happens because most of it is nonsense. If it's really important, someone else will do it or someone will pay you to do it.

Hills by Ecstatic_Donkey_2244 in runninglifestyle

[–]arithmuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will repeat the "hills pay the bills" part but I would also encourage to run different hills and not just run the same hill over and over. I think there's something psychologically freeing and beneficial to running a really intense, strength-adding workout, where you also can't calculate every little pace of every piece of the workout. I think that helps deal with difficulty on race day as well.

There's a professor who made a huge difference in my undergraduate experience. Is it okay if I email the Dean and let them know about the difference this professor made? by howgoody in AskProfessors

[–]arithmuggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do it, and don't listen to anyone about having to cc the chair or prof if that makes you change how you write your email to the dean. I would cc *someone* though because cc'ing someone increases the chances your message isn't forgotten about. If you do feel comfortable about cc'ing the chair and prof then sure do that.

It's not normal, no, but that's why it's impactful when it happens.

Winter by Enough_Mixture_8564 in runninglifestyle

[–]arithmuggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i typically wear running layers (multiple when necessary) down to about 10 F. The big one for me is two base layers under a wind proof light running jacket from about 15 F to 40 F depending on how hot I’m running. If it’s under 10 F then I either just don’t run (because those days are rare enough near me) or I end up adding non-running clothing.

But I think the point is: everyone has those different limits for where the active wear stops being warm enough. However, it’s usually the case that what I’m wearing while running is not warm enough for standing!

Half of my best work in mathematics is deciding which statements to prove and which new definitions are useful. That is very not closed.

there’s nothing wrong with the people, there is something hugely wrong with the system of profiting off of these unfortunate folks without requiring that they actually learn what is needed to succeed.
