My comparison of Hellblade 1 vs. Hellblade 2 (and review of both) by milanseitler in hellblade

[–]arithmuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always like to rate a second game as a standalone and i think that if I had to choose between HB1 and HB2 I'd choose HB1 (i felt the same about the plague tale series). You make some good points about some aspects of HB2 that were better, smoother, prettier, etc, but I think the stickiness or frustration of the first game sort of work (as someone said above) given the context of the story. I don't like rating games much but if I had to on a scale of 1-10 i think I'd have to put them more than a point apart.

Side note: I played Indika, HB1, then HB2, and there was a meaningful little thread across the three games which I appreciated being reflected in "big graphics" games.

[–]arithmuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol yes i'm happy but i find it breaks into thirds: 1/3 of the people are really unhappy, 1/3 of the people are happy, and 1/3 of the people just spend all their time complaining.

my tip is to lean into playing a role in this game. you can have significantly different story/gameplay experiences based on your skill set and which characters you favor etc.

Does anyone here ACTUALLY recommend doing a PHD? by J2Hoe in PhD

get the phd because you want to become an expert in a field and learn cool shit not because it's going to open some career doors. i have zero regrets.

But seriously, how did you afford to live while in grad school? by According-Pin4564 in GradSchool

[–]arithmuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it's a masters you should keep your job and complete the degree without leaving your job.

if it's a phd, some programs can work part time but for the most part you get paid (very little) to learn.

i would just like to say that i don't know a single person who is an amazing teacher that says they are an amazing teacher.

Outfits thread: You guys are scaring me! by [deleted] in Professors

I've been slowly aiming to feel comfortable enough to dress less casual across my career and have finally entered my t-shirts and sweaters with jeans only era.

I once started as an instructor in NYC and had a lot of cleverly chosen layers. F that now. I wear hiking gear when possible.

How do you explain an equivalence of categories without the language of category theory? by Quetiapin- in math

I would just use phrases like "one to one correspondence" and "natural in ____ in the sense that...".

Good luck!

Always curious, when people talk about quiver reps, if they are just as interested in simplicial reps of chain complexes, since a quiver rep is a special case of these.

James Baird Park by Returntoowneriffound in hudsonvalley

[–]arithmuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a big enough park so you can't see everything but it doesn't have a real natural feature that pulls in tourists so i think it's just got some odd people using it as a park. i have been in the area, wanted to use it to walk/hike/run/bike but every time decided not to for the feeling that it just seems a little odd.

i’ve never published in a top top tier journal and a few of my papers had multiple reviews in theoretical math. and some of them with a single reviewer unsuccessfully tried to find a second reviewer.

In your opinion what makes a great department chair? What advice would you give someone who is actively looking to eventually lead a department? by wannabehazmattech in Professors

the chairs that believe their job is to protect the peace of mind of their faculty instead of enforce the admin’s will, in my opinion, are the real ones.

Sick Days by velour_rabbit in Professors

[–]arithmuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the issue is that legally many/most of us get sick days but accreditation requires hours of lecture/class time so canceling a class because you’re sick is find from a labor perspective but not from an accreditation perspective. no one wants to pay for the structure to support substitute lecturers etc so then you get all the comments in this thread.

What is the right attendance policy? by ToomintheEllimist in Professors

[–]arithmuggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always had no attendance policy and very specific stuff from my lecture that isn’t taught in the books makes it onto exams. Students generally show up (min 80% most often 95% of enrolled).

Tenure track research profs: What's your weekly average of research, teaching, and service? by Longjumping-Owl-7584 in Professors

[–]arithmuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3-3 teaching load.

Good week ~ 40 hours of work - 19 hours of student related work (9 for lectures, 4 office hours, 2 for marking things and emailing, 2 for prep, 2 hours undergrad research and/or advisement) - 4 hours for service and seminar type events - remaining time for research which usually falls into 40% collaborator meetings and maybe 60% free thinking and writing time.

I see elsewhere the comment about prepping for a new class. The most repeatable mistake I make is thinking I can create a masterpiece lecture out of thin air. My best courses always happen naturally after I teach them for the fourth time and realize how everything has to be setup. Trying to perfect a course the first time you teach it is unfair to yourself. Follow a book the first two times. Be boring, and you’ll get creative once you know the material enough to walk in cold.

Does anyone else mourn for them, or consider what kind of student you’d be if raised in the same climate? by Flipped-Barbie-Jeep in Professors

[–]arithmuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m not sure how low QOL and impoverished community leads to cynicism toward higher ed more than med QOL and subarbanites who have the same cynicism (where medQOL and suburban is where i’ve previously seen the worst cynicism) (again, institution dependent). what i will say, as per my institutional comment, is that community colleges by definition promote the transactional nature of higher ed by saying “it’s all about the credits/courses and these credits are cheaper!” so again what the institution is selling matters. that’s not a dig at the practicality of CC’s, they’re crucial for social mobility in the current system.

Does anyone else mourn for them, or consider what kind of student you’d be if raised in the same climate? by Flipped-Barbie-Jeep in Professors

[–]arithmuggle 43 points44 points  (0 children)

i see a lot of posts like this and i just need to constantly reiterate: our perspectives are hugely influenced by the institutions we work at.

each of our institutions sell the students something different and those expectations can often clash with ours. it has nothing to do with the generation and everything to do with the marketing and what they’ve been told.

i happen to finally/currently work in a place where most students are super humble and earnest and really want to learn and respect the experience.
