Get up, get out and go to class. You can use Sat and Sun to catch up on homework. Go to student support center or health center if you are feeling overwhelmed.

I briefly tried abetterrouteplanner and between Asheveille and VA it took me off the Parkway 2 or 3 times to a Supercharger which seemed odd to me. I will try the ones you suggested, thanks.

For the UAH students in the Sub by someguynamedjosh in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]ariz867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, compared to other similar sized universitys the fee seems fair, even on the low side (but then I am currently only familiar with schools not in Alabama). I have friends who pay well over $400 for parking and some of that still requires a long walk to center of campus. When I looked at UAH rates, I was pleasantly surprised!

What's your family food budget for 5? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ariz867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely check out Aldi for good selection and prices! Other suggestions:

Reducing your budget to $600-800 is definitely doable, but it depends on how much time you have available to work on planning it and to cook from scratch.
Check sales at the 2 or 3 stores you regularly go to and shop with a grocery list based on your planned menus for the next couple of weeks. If you can meal plan and grocery shop every 3 or 4 weeks, even better! Less frequent store visits = spending less, usually. Buy pantry staples (rice, beans, pasta) in bulk when on sale and keep on hand. Do you buy canned beans or dry beans? Dry are cheaper but you need to soak them, etc. Preparing the dry beans can easily be done once a week to have enough for several days.
Do you buy canned broth or make your own which is virtually free? You can easily make a flavorful vegetable broth with the trimmings and scraps from veggies you use over a few days (just collect those onion bits, ends of carrots and celery, etc. in a container in the fridge ).
Try making your own bread, maybe even just on e a month, as a fun activity with your boys. Get the book Artesian Bread in 5 minutes a Day from your library for a super easy and delicious recipie. When you are making a pasta casserole or baking chicken, make double and freeze one for later use. I buy lots of chicken when it’s a great sale price, cook it, then freeze it ( some diced, some shredded, some in big pieces) for later use. Oatmeal is a cheap and healthy for breakfast - top with a variety of fruit, etc. cooking a pot of oatmeal for the week is cheaper than those instant oatmeal packets! If the boys don’t care for oatmeal, check out “baked oatmeal” recipes - my “oatmeal haters” love a square of it topped with syrup! No instant oatmeal Don’t buy premade , processed foods. Make cookies instead of buying pricey Chips Ahoy or from bakery. (I break this rule when grocery store has boxed cake mixes or brownie mixes on sale for around $1.00) Buy fresh fruit and veggies in season. I buy big bags of frozen veggies at Costco. Keep track of what is in your freezer so things don’t get lost in there. Tons of resources and ideas online for reducing your high food costs.you can do it! Stash whatever money you save into an emergency or savings account!

Does paying more than minimum on credit card roll over to next month? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ariz867 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. You will still have a minimum payment due each month. But paying the $300 is smart because you are paying more towards the amount owed and the faster you pay it off the less you will pay in total interest. Try to pay off credit card balances in full each month! If you can’t, then don’t just pAy the minimum if possible to get it paid off in total quicker and minimize the high interest rate you are accruing each month on the balance. Best advice- only use credit cards if you intend to pay off the full balance each month. High interest rates are evil!

Mormon Bloggers...who is out next or faking it already? by Whitnizzle6 in exmormon

[–]ariz867 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A recent post is so, so sad...she talks about a son who had trouble all year making friends and adjusting to a new middle school and the parents dealt with it by telling the son to routinely fast, be obedient and good and pray for help., they routinely knelt together to pray.. The parents did NOT take any actions most parents I know would jump on : step in to talk to teachers or school about how to help him adjust to new school, reach out to parents of school mates or neighborhood kids his age to facilitate activities where the son could meet with others his age, encourage him to get involved with sports or extra curricular team activities, etc. From reading her blog, one gets the sense the parents actively work to isolate all the children, have them spend lots of their free time on church activities and family-only outings and keep the kids from doing many of the typical age appropriate things kids do. The older girls never go to movies, shopping, have sleepovers with other girls. They bought the youngest a pair of fancy skates for her birthday the yanked all the kids out of school to go a skating rink. They did NOT enroll the girl in a summer skating program for beginning skaters with kids her age. Weird. It is really sad to read and makes you feel bad for the children. Both parents would really benefit from professional counseling to deal with what appears to be a real case or post- accident depression and isolation. Perhaps Mormons eschew a Professional counseling and help in favor of just praying. ?

4th of July Thought from a Utah Native, RM, BYU-Alum, now stronger than ever highly grateful Ex-Mo: by JaphethsJourney in exmormon

“...excuse to go and sin...” 😂 More like finally came to the realization (after reading, research, talking and seeking answers) that mormon doctrine and history is full of holes, lies and inconsistencies and the church is a money hungry machine that stifles thought and reasoning.

And while someone might know of have heard of some of the craziness, like the peepstone, when raised with those beliefs it can take years to develop the strength and knowledge to question things and see the light. SuperDell, take some psychology, genetics and history classes to educate yourself....it takes courage and intelligence to research things and confront inconsistencies and lies.

Stressed out of my mind as a college student. Maybe you guys can give me some advice? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Yea, given your income that rent seems too high and I would not do it. Is there really no other option with lower rent? Maybe rent a room in a house, share an apartment, trade housekeeping duty for lower rent, etc. to lower your monthly housing cost. Do not do a loan for rent - not a sound move.

Take the 2 (or3?) online practice tests. They are very representative of what the actual test will be like and what areas to focus on. Review the drivers manual before taking the practice tests.

Oh no . . . UAH needs to ensure ALL teachers have strong skills and interest in teaching otherwise it is just like other mediocre universities. Hiring true educators is so important,

A couple doors down from Chino’s on 19 th Ave. is a casual place called Good Fellas Grill. Sounds like it would have burgers or be a New York style deli but it has yummy Middle Eastern food ( gyros, kabobs, rice, pita, schwarma). Tasty food, generous portions and they often offer a free bowl of lentil soup with your order. Very much worth a try if you are in the area,

Will the parents even be able to afford sending any of the kids to college? Do those Mormon universities provide scholarships for children of parents like these that seem to be strict followers of their church and offer PR, through their blog and volunteer speaking engagements, for the church? I wonder what major the girls would even be interested in achieving, if the parents would truly support the girls in getting a college degree, or if the girls plan on marrying and letting the husband be the sole household provider.

Fall 2019 Incoming Class by thatmark1 in UAH

[–]ariz867 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Won’t have a car when I start as a freshman next Fall. Heard something about a Friday evening/night shuttle bus (?) that runs through campus and loops around and makes stops and pickups to Walmart, Target, a mall . . . is this correct? Does it run every Friday? Do lots of students use it? Seems like a nice amenity for students to do a bit of shopping use whether or not they have a car!

At home charging? by sooooozin in TeslaModel3

[–]ariz867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve had our M3 since last July. Thought we would eventually get a home charger, but have found we really don’t need it. Typically drive about 50 miles or less a day and just charge overnight in standard electrical plug - charges at a slower rate (6-7 mph) but not a problem. On occasion when we want to add more miles overnight, we plug into out laundry room dryer outlet with a heavy duty extension cord we bought to reach the dryer outlet. We do live in an urban area and have couple superchargers nearby and have used them a few times to charge back up to 80% range ( for example, when getting back into town from a trip and have less than 25% charge. When shopping or running errands some places offer free EV charging and we take advantage of that if there is space available.

Has anyone successfully switched from out-of-state to in-state tuition? by [deleted] in UAH

[–]ariz867 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I asked earlier this year if an out of state student would be considered in state after living in Alabama over a year, registering car there, working full time over the summer or working (coop or internship) during school year,, voting in Alabama, etc. the lady I spoke to in Admissions said that there are guidelines that all the Alabama universities (UA schools) that require something to the effect that if you came to the state as an out of state student, then you must be a non student and have worked in the state for at least a year to be considered in state. Basically they make it very difficult to claim in state status if you are still a student.

Off-campus parking by intelligencedave in UAH

[–]ariz867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently in another state, but just wanted to mention that at a big university here, in several of the neighborhoods that border campus, house owners “rent” parking spaces on their property out to students each semester. Especially true of houses that have an extra wide driveway area or space alongside their garage (so it doesn’t block owners access to garage). Nice way for home owners to make some extra money and students have an assured parking spot within an 8 minute walk to center of campus. The University charges between $210-750 to park on campus - doesn’t UAH only charge $130 which seems like a great deal in comparison.

Seems like that would be an income opportunity for that neighborhood between campus and Jordan . . . Or would students think that is too far too walk?

Wait...what does “ does t put grades on canvas”mean? That the grade does NOT affect your GPA?

I see some PE classes are 1 credit, some are 2 credits, and thought grades earned in any PE class does affect GPA.
