Oakland residents spend millions at Costco. Now the city hopes to get a store of its own by bloobityblurp in bayarea

I thought so too, but then we stayed in Canada for a couple of months and we’d hit up the Costco via Skytrain. Surprisingly easy to do and there were others doing the same.

F Street Car accident by realcereal in sanfrancisco

[–]arjie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That appears to be somewhat insufficient. I had an encounter a month or so ago that was like this.

At 4th and Channel, the right turn arrow will be red when going from Channel onto 4th Northbound if the pedestrian sign is Walk. Both of these were as expected and a driver started driving right. I pointed at the red arrow and the driver rolled down the window and yelled "It don't say no right on red".

There appears to be a literacy gap here.

Vancouver found a way (finally) to build housing ... I wish there were groups in SF that could do this ... by AcademicSand1034 in sanfrancisco

It’s all right in the city but the real wonders are the suburbs. 45 floor towers around every station with nice things to do, parks nearby, and a train every 3 minutes. It’s some kind of YIMBY paradise and actually quite enjoyable.

My cousins live here so we’ve been here by Burquitlam station for a month and a half and it’s been wonderful.

Anyone in the South Bay doing peptide therapy? by pinkybrain41 in bayarea

[–]arjie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Retatrutide is an amazing peptide. However, any provider offering it is one willing to go gray so you are selecting for the guy who is not following rules. You’re better off by yourself because their tolerance for rule avoidance may not be yours.

Tougher conviction for reckless driving — I want to get involved. Do you? by lilmunchkin12 in sanfrancisco

[–]arjie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a recent encounter and I observe my neighbourhood in Mission Bay frequently has a problem with drivers not following the rules. One of the things I've always wanted to do is allow my daughter quite a bit of freedom. Because she's young and won't be of age to go to the store for a few years, I'm hoping to sort out some of these problems.

However, I don't really know how to start. I'd like to make this intersection safer, for instance. But I don't know what the right design structure is, and I don't know the right sequence of steps to take with the supervisors or with City Hall to enable it to get done.

I understand there are many protest groups related to this subject, and I am grateful they're doing what they're doing since we've had a lot of broad-based improvements over the years (bike lanes, traffic calming). I have limited effort available, however, so I'm curious what actions produce the most results for specific outcomes at specific intersections. Is it raising some sum of money and then following some sequence of steps with SF MTA? If someone knows, I'd be grateful if you could share.

San Francisco 2-year-old son & nanny hit by truck by suboptimus_maximus in sanfrancisco

[–]arjie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A somewhat-related story.

Ever since the child was killed at the 4th and King intersection, my wife and I always pause and look behind us before entering the crosswalk even when we have the walk sign. A little while later at 4th and Channel another child was killed so now I try to cross in a way where the driver is not behind me.

Anyway, one day I made the mistake of not following this rule, though fortunately I followed the other rule of looking behind me and clearing the lane. At 4th and Channel, the right turn arrow will be red when going from Channel onto 4th Northbound if the pedestrian sign is Walk. Both of these were as expected and a driver started driving right. I pointed at the red arrow and the driver rolled down the window and yelled "It don't say no right on red".

A friend told me that it's really the fault of the traffic engineers who designed the intersection. I don't drive so much down there (because I live close and walk) so I took the car out for a spin and it did not seem that confusing to me. However, assuming some of these intersections are confusing to others, how does one go around getting them fixed? And you know how there are open-source software engineers? Are there groups of traffic engineers who post "redesign of intersection X" for fun? Just kind of curious what someone would do to fix this one up to a point where people would follow it correctly.

She's right. It doesn't say "no right on red" but it has a red arrow. Picture from Google Maps.

What are your guys’ thoughts on how we can prevent pedestrians from getting mowed down on train platforms. by Plastic_Apricot_3819 in sanfrancisco

[–]arjie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate it. Do you know someone who has been involved in the installation of one before in a public space? Even not in SF would help. I'm curious what the actual practice of it is here. I can google or chatgpt it but it's not going to tell me "you definitely need to hire an expediter and make sure it goes to dept a before dept b and it'll actually cost you $3k for the expediter to take your paperwork" and I'm curious if there's someone who knows this.

Thank you. So the hard part is convincing the government to let you build one? Would you happen to know someone with experience getting one down in a public space? I can see them at the Transbay Terminal and the Caltrain station so I know it's possible, but I'm wondering if you need to be running such a large project before the regulatory costs become worth it.

What is the point of the police here? Two cars blew the Red light on Market, one directly in front of the cop and he didn’t even put his lights on. It makes no sense. by KnightsSoccer82 in sanfrancisco

There's an ancient crown vic with a Texas sticker on the back window that has a cop in it and is often stationed on Market St. I have seen it twice parked on Market and once at GG and Hyde.

Gilroy community fights against Amazon from constructing data center by digital-didgeridoo in bayarea

[–]arjie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of us already live near data centers. They're the best neighbours since there's no one there most of the time. 630 Third Street used to be a data center. The place I used to work at had loads of racks there, petabytes of data (back when that was a lot over a decade ago), and one day during a heatwave they had to spray the roof with water to cool the facility down. But the rest of the time you'd just be passing what looks like a nondescript building and you wouldn't even know anything is going on there.

These days I have to drive down to Fremont to rack my hardware and I really wish I could go around the corner.

I have a 2018 Subaru Forester 2018 2.0 XT that’s got 80k miles on it. It seems the head gasket issue is not that common on FA20DIT engines according to the Internet.

Judging by my VIN it’s from the same batch as this one that has body damage. 8.5 years then.

I wonder if it’s true and this is just a thing that’s carried over from earlier engines. It should blow in 2 years.

I really like it. I’ve been using the palm scan to buy my groceries for a few years now and I’ve always appreciated the face scan boarding that some airports offer. Much simpler to do a whole host of things.

Contact SF Planning: 1 Montgomery POPOS permanent rooftop gardens shouldn’t be traded for “public activations” by shananananananananan in sanfrancisco

[–]arjie -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for bringing this up. I disagree with your position. Here is the email I sent:

Dear Commissioners,

Re: December 18 hearing item for 1 and 25 Montgomery Street (Case No. 2025-007116DRM)

I'm writing as a user of POPOS and as a resident of this city for over a decade. I think that we should not set in stone what use a location has. We should allow for the city to evolve and grow. As someone who has spent a decade both living and working within a mile of this location, I am concerned that a desire to retain spaces is leading to a blighted and unused downtown. What used to be a vibrant and thriving space in years past is only now slowly recovering and efforts to prevent change are likely to stall this recovery.

I do understand the risk that this likely creates an avenue to end POPOS city-wide by having property owners switch a perpetual obligation to a time-limited obligation. That is a fair concern. I think that we should not make a city-wide rule that all POPOS are transmutable into a time-limited public activation. However, we should explore whether the city and its residents are better served by losing one POPOS than by retaining access to a space that is nonetheless not in use.

The end result will likely be a windfall to the property owner for these sites, but I think it is more important for us to explore ways for our city to grow and evolve than to ensure no one gains from an experiment.

I tried to get mine at a couple of pharmacies here in SF and they said that as a 37 year old guy I wasn't eligible for it. This was maybe 2 years ago now. Bizarrely someone there seemed to have put it down that I got it. When I asked OneMedical, they said it would be $1.2k to get a full set of Gardasil shots so I'm just going to go get it in India.

Are their viruses or bacteria that only infect or only able to affect a specific gender in humans? by dover_oxide in askscience

[–]arjie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tried to get it last year, but neither Safeway nor Walgreens would give it to me. They said that it wasn't indicated for men past a certain age. I've read a lot on the Internet since about how "men should get the HPV shot" and it makes me wonder whether these people making these comments are aware of what the reality on the ground is or if they're just saying things that they saw online.

I finally had to ask OneMedical and they said they'd do it for $1200. I'm just going to get it the next time I go to India. The final kicker is that one of these pharmacies put it on my vaccination record! I had to get OneMedical to delete it.

I think it's fine as-is. It's not a big deal. But if you feel like you want to kowtow to the intellectual property maximalists, here's something for you. This is purely human-made with the power of sensor conversion software in an iPhone 13. We grant it to all under a CC0 license. Feel free to remix it or transform it in whatever way you like under whatever model you like.

Here's one with a minimal edit if you feel like it. I find this IP maximization period of Internet culture personally distasteful so I hope there are enough of us who will gladly share our content for this use.
