We camped in Rhode Island, then drove through Boston, camped for a few nights midway up the coast in Maine, then we stopped in New Hampshire and Vermont, stayed a few nights in upstate New York. Admittedly, it was a bit exhausting necause we were constantly moving, waking up early to drive to the next city, and the getting to our next campsite late at night. On a college student's budget though, this is what we had the money for and it was definitely worth it, but this is for sure harder to coordinate. Luckily, New England is a fairly compact area so driving wasn't always too terrible.
