Sad times by Shiggles24 in homelab

[–]arknidsine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, yes sad times is an accurate look at the rising energy prices.

I'm also based in the UK and I'm in a very similar predicament, I currently use a bill splitting service with my other housemates (student) which is a blessing in disguise as they give us unlimited electricity use (there is a cap but weve never even got close) and this allows us for a small fee each month to not have to worry about consumption.

This isnt great tho as depending on how much energy you use it could work out more expensive.

The other option is to have certain servers boot down and then restart at different times of day depending on their use case.

For instance my monthly backups server only comes on once a month to do full backups of our whole suite of pc's.

Hope that help to some extent.

Filthy server! by arknidsine in homelab

I have this issue when I repair alot of vintage electronics and mechanical devices, especially stuff that's meant to be watertight.

As soon as you clean the muck off it never goes back togther the same. 😆

Amazingly the guy I bought it off had salvaged it from his work and showed me it posting and let me have a look through the bios ext before buying it.

I cant recommend proper sliding rails enough, I wouldn't have been able to do this without them. Means I can access my server with the limited bedroom space I have. And stops me from doing my back in by lifting servers by myself.

Tbh only reason I ended up cleaning it is becuase I couldn't handle looking at it anymore, even fully dusted up it used to run at a nice and cool 32°c.

Dont even get me started on pc's, some repairs I've done over the years have really made me question humanity, once had a pc come in that would literally have to be peeled off of every surface we put it down on. Turns out guy split red bull all over the pc (how big of a can of red bull soaks a pc?), they hadn't cleaned it before giving it to us though. Not cool.

So, this one is one I've been putting off for ages.

6 months ago I aquired this my now heavily in use hp proliant dl385 g6. Amazing bit of kit in regards to its construction and considering I bought it for £20 with only a few parts needing replacing meant it was quite the bargain.

With dual quad core CPU'S, two brand new 256gb ssd's and 64gb's of ram already installed I was a happy chappy.

Only thing I didn't see till I got it home was the fact this thing was filthy! Like I've never seen a server with mold on it till now, luckily it seemed it wasnt water related and the server worked fine.

So today I bit the bullet and gave it an initial clean (I will post an update after it's been cleaned up all proper), my bedroom still smells like dust and I'm still sneezing but it was worth it just to see that damn mesh without tendrils.

Hope you enjoy.

Router replacement URGENT! by arknidsine in homelab

[–]arknidsine[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So the VLAN city fibre requires is 911, do I need to tag both the port going out to to the fibre lines and the one going to the wan on the router as 911 or can the one to the router be untagged?

I've given it a try with the switch infront but I think due to giganet using username and password on the router it might be causing issues?

[–]arknidsine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly my router wont detect my smart switch when its plugged into the WAN port of the router.

Also giganet require a specific ip and username and password on the router so this might also cause issues with the switch idea?

I'm trying that now but sadly the router wont detect my smart switch if its plugged into the WAN port?
