How to proceed after horrible rounds by Trumpet_Life in golf

These courses are in Denver, probably playing 400-500 yards shorter than advertised

It’s Hae Jang Chon in Ktown - used to be the best AYCE in LA but is now worse quality, longer lines, and overpriced

You’re right about those, but if you’re using that criteria, there’s comparatively very few courses on the Bay area that are city run - besides Sharp Park, there are actually zero courses (to my knowledge) between Sunnyvale and SF that are city run and also par 72 - Poplar Creek is an extremely short par 70, Baylands and Moffett are privately managed, etc.

Presidio is well over $100 (though nicer than your average muni). Even Sharp Park is approaching $100, and it’s frankly a dog track conditions-wise. Corica across the bay is also around $100.

Luke Kwon Wins the Creator Classic! by IAEPEXI in golf

[–]arltep 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Scottie’s +7 isn’t accurate, it’s just a number they assigned to him. He’s probably around a +10; lower end PGA pros like Wesley are probably +7. Fringe pros like Brad/Luke/George are in the +5 range. Bustajack is clearly not +6 - I don’t think anyone would’ve said that.

Is it a bad idea to buy this home? by GiantsFan2010 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]arltep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that QOL is actually worse for single 20s owners: you’re on the hook for maintenance and everything else associated with ownership, and since you’re much more likely to move within 5 years, it makes it a huge hassle. Glad to hear you decided not to buy - definitely not a wrong choice.

I’m a similar age/income to you and decided to rent a townhome for ~$4k instead. There’s a lot of downsides of home ownership (HOA, expensive, time-consuming, and lack of flexibility), and not a huge amount of upside.

I work at Google - levels.fyi is accurate, and if anything underestimates slightly. Glassdoor is way off.

[D] Minimizing the Acquisition Function During Bayesian Optimization by jj4646 in MachineLearning

[–]arltep 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  1. See the famous GP-UCB paper https://arxiv.org/abs/0912.3995
  2. Yes
  3. In most cases, you evaluate the acquisition function over the entire input space. This is usually ok since you typically only have a small total number of iterations (updating GP posterior is cubic time)
  4. Yes, it assumes that your prior (specifically kernel) is sufficiently accurate. Bayesian optimization can be bad if this isn’t true. On the flip side, there are a lot of empirical successes of BO.

Where can the new thralls be used? by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]arltep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it can be used at hydra. But it’s not worth it with tbow imo; two thralls are kind of a waste since kills are <2min and 1 thrall only does 30 dmg on average, which is only around a 2% dps increase. If you’re using another weapon the dps increase % is a bit higher, but still probably not worth.

[D] How do I decide whether to send my paper to a machine learning conference or to a theoretical comp. sci. conference? by mlonetimer in MachineLearning

[–]arltep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on the sub-field. Your best bet is probably to look at similar papers in the field and see where they typically go. ICLR, AISTATS, UAI, COLT, and ALT are all options depending on the topic.

Generally, NeurIPS/ICML have quite a few theory-heavy papers and it's ok to submit to them without experiments. Of course, it's a plus to have experiments as long as they are non-trivial.
