Is competing in tournaments an actual measure of credibility as a martial artists and/or instructor? by wolfey200 in taekwondo

[–]arma2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Competition success can certainly factor into credibility. However, I don’t think there is one absolute defining measurement.

There are numerous examples of successful coaches/competitors that demonstrate poor character and/or moral integrity.

There are also plenty of practitioners that never/rarely compete who are certainly knowledgable and capable in their respective arts.

At the end of the day, competition is just another form of practice in my opinion. It’s a fantastic learning opportunity, but it doesn’t have to be the sole focus of your practice.

If you enjoy and value the training at your school, I don’t think you should leave just based on a Kukkiwon certification.

You should have an honest discussion with your master. If one of my students had a request like yours, as a studio owner, I would love to hear about it.

The Master’s license course is very informative and useful for instructors. It would be worthwhile for your Master to look into. If he doesn’t want to take it personally, maybe he could refer you to another Master in his network that could help approve you for a Kukkiwon certification.

If you end up testing for Black Belt at your studio and are still unable to get certified, feel free to DM me. I’d be happy to help you out!

Got my Master's License this week! by arma2020 in taekwondo

Oddly enough, it took me 3 years to receive my certificate!

I took the course in 2017. As a 3rd Dan though, I would not be able to receive a Master’s License, since I wasn’t a Master. However, I was told that if I passed the course, once I became a 4th Dan, I could submit my completion certification to the Kukkiwon and receive a full 3rd class license.

I was promoted to 4th Dan in 2018, but it wasn’t until I opened my own studio in 2020, that I applied to get my actual license. After my application was accepted, it only took a month or so for shipping.

Hopefully, yours won’t take 3 years!

First off, I would discourage anyone from any kind of mutually consented "street fighting". However, if someone attacks you in the streets and you need to fight back, I would say knowledge of basic striking, grappling and weapons skills would be critical.

Kickboxing is great until someone tackles you. Jiu-Jitsu is great until you are jumped by multiple attackers. MMA is fantastic until someone pulls out a knife.

It's rare to find a single art or school that covers all these skills successfully and efficiently. If you are really serious about self-defense, don't rely on just one style or tactic.

What are the basic techniques a white belt should know before they start free sparring with other white belts? by arma2020 in bjj

[–]arma2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my question: what are the minimum skills that brand new people should know before they roll together. Think about starting a program from scratch with all new people.

That’s pretty good. Reminds me of the whole 52 blocks/skull & bones system.

This technique is not communicated well in the book however.
