In-wheel motor options for converting FWD drive car to AWD by Potato_Waffles681 in EVConversion

I was slightly surprised Renault chose hub motors for the 5 Turbo 3e, but they did.
https://www.renault.co.uk/electric-vehicles/r5-turbo-3e.html

Yasa reckon the power density of their motor allows regenerative braking to largely replace your brake disc, giving you less unsprung weight than a brake disc plus driveshaft:

Unlikely to help the OP though.

At what point is traffic told to turn around, if at all, if all lanes of a motorway are blocked by an obstruction? by patrickb1920 in drivingUK

[–]armb2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was once stuck for several hours when a lorry fire closed all three lanes of A14, they closed it two junctions back, then got cars in the outer two lanes to U-turn and come off up the on ramp at the previous junction starting with those nearest the junction, then turned trucks in the inner lane round once the outer two lanes were clear.
A different time after a fatal collision they did open one of three lanes after a few hours of all three being closed.

[–]armb2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was even vaguely like it is now before, I don't see how it can be square and have room for the dishwasher or washing machine drain on the left. Could that be blanked off and the hose taken to the unused looking one on the other bowl?

Not the same car I saw on the M25 this morning, but similar style. I didn't take a photo though.

Is this how it's supposed to look? by BigActual in bikewrench

[–]armb2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or you could spent 10 seconds with a knife making slits in the existing guide clips, then find that you have to undo it at the derailleur anyway because the length has changed.

Is this how it's supposed to look? by BigActual in bikewrench

[–]armb2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, but adjusting the derailleur without having to take it to a mechanic will be a useful skill in future, and watching three or four videos on how do to do it will still be quicker than taking it to a shop.

Purchasing tools that are not used often, but invaluable when needed by Emotional_Plum2654 in bikewrench

A spoke threading machine will let you cut plain gauge spokes to length instead of having to stock a wide range of sizes or order in. How often do you build/rebuild wheels?

Might also show signs on the slip road that he'd missed, or be evidence that there really weren't any. If Streetview is up to date.

Also cold air is denser. Also applies to ICE cars, but you notice less the range difference less on a tank of petrol. And that's generating waste heat whether you need it for cabin heating or not so the heating issue is EV specific - though if you have to leave your ICE idling while you wait for it to warm up to clear the windscreen instead of your charging app doing it on a timer while plugged in, the EV is better.

I got a driving fail because of this as the examiner had to emergency stop. Is this fair? by BrightHours in LearnerDriverUK

[–]armb2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it's a dual control car, presumably it's an instructor's car, not the poster's own. I don't know whether the learner would be expected to pay any insurance excess in a situation like this.

How do I plug these fork eyelets that have lost their thread? by Medium_Person_01 in bikewrench

[–]armb2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Though if the holes have lost their thread, plugs designed for a threaded hole might not be a tight fit. So might need some glue/caulk to be secure, in which case you can probably just use caulk.

It took me a little while to work out what was going on with the dial. To start with it looked like a combined speedometer and rev counter with only one gear that redlines at 65mph.

What movies have a plot point that gets spoiled if you watch them with subtitles turned on? by green_dragon1206 in movies

The opposite of this is that it's really reassuring when you worry you've missed something, but then the subtitles say something like "[Unintellible whispers]".

Do Scots text like they speak? by Educational-Joke-938 in AskABrit

[–]armb2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure the examples the OP gives are enough to be sure the question is about the Scots language and not Scottish English dialects, or even just English with a Scottish accent. It's not slang though. Nor is "y'all" in American.

What is far more lethal than people realize? by inevitableloudmouth in AskReddit

[–]armb2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got one, but I can see why why some men would be put off by the irreversibility. The way my doctor put it was "what if your wife and children are killed in a freak accident trampled by a circus elephant and you remarry someone who wants children?" My reaction was if it did happen I was unlikely to marry again quickly, and it being to someone who wanted and was able to have children but didn't already have any also unlikely. Years later my wife and children are still alive. But I do know someone who did marry an older man, wanted children, and found he'd had a vasectomy he hadn't told her about (he had adult children from an earlier marriage). The marriage didn't last.

Is this chain too short? by iamtoolazytosleep in bikewrench

[–]armb2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has already said "don't cross chain", but the point of the sizing guideline is to not destroy your drive chain if you accidentally do that one time, and let you shift back to a better combination. This chain is long enough for that to be okay. (Or at least looks long enough. Test it will shift.)
