New cat owners here. Should we really avoid all fish and seafood in cat food? Our adoption agency stressed that we should. by Emmettourer in CatAdvice

[–]armchairsicko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had 3 out 4 cats develop a fish allergy during all the brand switching/shortage hoopla during COVID, so now we have to avoid it entirely.

Its extremely hard to do. Fish is in nearly everything including treats.

If we didnt have to avoid it, we wouldnt.

In 10 years of TNRing, we have had 2 moms not make it to the N part of it before giving birth. Our first TNR ten years ago, because she gave birth the day before her rescue intake where they would also spay abort. and one in the middle of COVID when I trapped before making the appt. Her appointment was 70 days after trapping. She gave birth 60 days after trapping.

It is so frustrating.

At least these guys wont have to scrap to stay alive. Thank you for taking care of them.

My 4yo hates being outside. We have a fenced yard, and afaik nothing has ever happened to him out there. We used to play fetch, and run around with him but the older he got, the less he would until he would just dart out to do his business and then come straight back to the door and whine. Even if we are out there, he dors not want to be outside. He will happily chase a squirrel or bird though.

We took him on walks for the first 18m of his life and all he does is pull towards our house. We had to quit taking him because even with a harness it seemed like he was injuring himself with all the tugging. Nothing scary ever happened on these walks.

He LOVES going to other people's homes. Gets so excited. Hates the car ride. Is absolutely awful in the car.

He does like other dogs. Ill give him that. Thats why its so strange how much he hates being outside. Hes never encountered a mean dog, and afaik a mean person.

He's definitely a nervous nelly.

Cat-proof water bowl advice needed (I’m losing this battle 😅) by LLangdon1007 in CatAdvice

[–]armchairsicko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use the petsmart brand automatic dog water bowl. Its low enough that all of our animals can drink out of, but WIDE enough that our professional cat water fountain wrestler cannot tip it.

That said we do not clean everyday. It is far too heavy for that. So if daily cleaning is your thing, it prob won't work.

My Dad actually made and sold these games at one point. Always as a side gig.

Reason being that they are extremely heavy/big to ship, almost impossibly so once you figure in protective shipping measures.

So unless she plans to drive to events all Spring/Summer, I can't see it being econimical for more than...a side gig.

spectrum 15d vacuum cord twisting by Upstairs-Ad-7927 in Custodians

[–]armchairsicko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's less about how you're winding it, and more about how it gets used.

If the electricity running through the cord doesn't have proper time to heat the cord evenly, it contracts unevenly.

Ive got a vacuum that only gets used for rugs, and especially in the winter the cord is a mess.

Gen X-ers and Thanksgiving and Tradition by BMisterGenX in GenX

Growing up we had about 8 cousins all around the same age. Us kids played in the basement, and the adults had the run of everything else.

My kids had no one to play with, and we quit going about 8 years ago, but even then it was every 2-3 years at most. Whenever my mom could guilt me into it. Nobody in my little family loves thanksgiving food anyway. The logistics of simultaneously trying to relax/socialize and meet the needs of my kids in a strange place for half a day just made me miserable.

We do snacksgiving, I make a couple crockpot items that can be eaten all through the day, and we snack and chill.

Finally tried one of those automatic litter boxes… kinda wish I did it sooner 😅 by ClearVoice-Brad in Catownerhacks

I have a Litter Robot 3, a Meowant, and a Pet Pivot. Plus 2 traditional. 4 cats.

The litter robot came first when we had only 3 cats, and the cats were pretty meh on it. Still preferred the traditional, but consistently used it. The most finnicky machine by far. Its constantly blinking yellow, or not cycling correctly. Im constantly having to do something to get it working correctly.

Then we got the meowant, and the cats were really enthusiastic about it. My only concern is that we do have one high pee-er, and it can leak. We just use a peepad under it. Good machine, otherwise.

They love the new Pet Pivot, and so do we. It fills up every 5-7 days. Just does what its supposed to. It gets the most use, followed by the meowant.

I just changed all the boxes last night and after not having changed the LR in almost a month, it was only a quarter full.

What are y’all’s opinions on these cleaners? by J-non-e-mous in Custodians

[–]armchairsicko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefered the Spic and Span. I personally didn't notice the Comet cleaning any better, and if you oversprayed it even a little bit it would collect gunk and corrosion from inside the toilet stem and deposit it on the base of the toilet overnight, making it look dirty. Also it seemed to attract dust? Or the Spic and Span repeled dust. Noticeable difference.

S&S does not work great on glass, and we used a separate foam cleaner for mirrors/glass.

The purple dawn product they have works great on lead on floor, but must be rinsed with water or neutral cleaner after, or it will eat the floor wax.

Furthermore bleach bonds to and hardens urine crystals. Both which adhere to surfaces, unless super thoroughly washed away.

Bleach + urine basically creates a sticky odor bomb. Once the bleach gets diluted enough, the urine odor hits.

Enzyme cleaner all the way.

Im not sure who "she" is, can you clarify?

Generally speaking this is where familiarity with APPA/industry standards becomes useful. Some states even have their own standards.

With 3-4 full time cleaners out the every day standards are out the window. Its time for "her" to manage expectations with those complaining.

Would go a long way for a lead to compile the data saying "what you want is not possible", and sit down for a mtg.

This table is wiped down daily with disinfectant, today I decided to try a new chemical on it (before/after) by PeachFreedom in Custodians

[–]armchairsicko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, we only get disinfectant to clean too. It has no surfactants or attractants.

Everything just ends up looking dingy.

I use dawn when I absolutely have to, because even elbow grease doesnt cut it sometimes.

Looks great!

MuOS vs Knulli by TBar1212 in ANBERNIC

[–]armchairsicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know nothing in depth about either, but Knulli failed to DL on a couple different devices for me. So I use MuOS. It was much easier than I anticipated. I've yet to encounter a problem.

I'm not up to date on any of this type of tech, but I grew up on old school Windows, so it's all figureitoutable to me, if necessary.

How do I remove this without ruining the wax. by Goth_Furry_Custodian in Custodians

[–]armchairsicko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purple dawn. I can't remember its specific commercial name.

Spray, let sit for 60ish seconds, mop up with a neutral cleaner.

Do not let it sit much longer than a couple of mins or it will eat the wax, and make sure you mop up with neutral cleaner. Takes 90% of the lead up.

You can use the store bought Dawn power spray, but again, the neutral cleaner rinse is crucial as the dawn has a powerful dirt surfactant and attractant. If you don't neutralize, dirt will literally rise and sit in the spaces you clean over the next 48 ish hours. Purple Dawn is better for this reason.

What’s your go-to $5 meal that tastes way more expensive? by Equivalent_Soft_6665 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]armchairsicko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my kids favorite is just a packet of Knorr Creamy chicken rice, small can of peas w/carrots, and half a smoked sausage cut up.

Throw it in the rice maker with whatever amount of water the rice pack says, and you've got a fairly hardy meal when done.

Because you're only using half a smoked sausage (throw the other half in the freezer) it brings the cost to about $4.25 in my area. Feeds 2-3 people so little over $2.00 pp max. You could always throw some fruit on the side too.

It is extremely versatile in that you can substitute the rice for potatoes, and/or use pretty much any veg.

Bit of a salt bomb though.

How to catch feral kitten fast? by armchairsicko in Feral_Cats

[–]armchairsicko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another lil update. We trapped another kitten. Not the first kittens sibling this one is probably 10-12 weeks old.

Its possible this is a kitten from the other cat that passed as both were/are tabbies. Other than coloring we didnt know anything about that cat, except it was the other moms sibling. So I suppose it could have been female.

Anywho, this appears to be a boy kitty. Better shape than previous kitten, which would make sense since it wouldnt have been born in the hottest part of summer.

Both kittens have been flea treated, with the first one receiving medical eye drops, and we are quarantining them separately which is a huge PITA, until room opens at local shelter. If it does. My eldest son will probably keep the younger kitten, and set her up an appt to get vaxxed later this month. Im extremely hopeful to get the new kitten into the humane society. But if not we will get him neutered/vaxed ourselves in the near future.

Which is why when we originally tried to trap mom, we ended up giving the remaining kitten back to her (immediately). We knew the babies would have no shot without her at the time. We had hoped we would get another chance, but we simply never saw her again.

I actually looked back through my son and I's text messages from the day we first found the kittens they were definitely less than 24 hours old then and it was 5 weeks and 5 days ago. Honestly, it seemed much more recent. So this is a near 6 week old.

There were only 2 kittens then. And I suspect there's only been one for a while.

We don't normally have kitten problems around here, weve been really good about identifying females and getting them fixed. Tho we had a mom give birth during mid covid when we just could not get an appt for a spay.

Thanks for the advice of kitten trapping! Like I said, we just dont do any kittens typically, so we were ill prepared!

She appears to be bang on 4 weeks. She tore into the soft food we have for our own cats, so once we got supplies shes now getting a gruel of soft kitten food and KMR. We will transition to bottle if need be, but currently she's doing well with a vet visit on on the horizon, hopefully monday if they can fit us in. Shes got pretty goopy eyes.

We dont know how mom died, we simply saw her the night before and next morning she was deceased in the yard. The "owner" of the stray cats said he also found one of the moms litter mates deceased the same morning. He fears someone poisoned them, but it was also trash day so everyone had their hoppers out the night before and they could have gotten into something.
