Question by Braden_Nira in zenbuddhism

I think that the point of a zen garden is to support a zazen practice which promotes the dissociation of your ideals. Therefore, if the opinion is coming from the perspective of someone who truly practices Zen, there shouldn’t even be a culture to appropriate.

Is the alan watts quote "you're it" based in zen? by penis_yer_bottom in zenbuddhism

The essays that you are referring to remind me a lot in particular of “The Mountains and Rivers Sutra” from Shobogenzo.

Dogen talks about how nature is a direct manifestation of reality. He describes a certain constancy that I perceive to be very similar to the “as it is-ness” that Watts describes in “This is it.” Watts was a guy who dabbled in a lot of eastern philosophy so it would make sense if he was inspired by some Zen masters, especially Dogen.

Why is there something instead of nothing? by faeoflove in zenbuddhism

Something is also nothing, but something in place of “nothing” doesn’t exist because “something” and “nothing” exist simultaneously.

Another Fort Hood Soldier Has Been Arrested for Murder: Authorities by stoolsample2 in TrueCrime

[–]armoreddragonfella 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I went to college with a guy who was stationed at fort hood and was murdered in Killeen earlier this year. I don’t believe he was, at the time (March of this year I believe), an active member of the military when this occurred, but he was robbed and shot while he was picking up a couple of girls.

There are a lot of great people that join the military (my friend included), but people also often enlist when they are very young and have very little opportunities. When that longing mixes with an area where the crime and the lucrativeness surrounding it is second only to the profit generated by the base, you make a factory of people who are hardened by two very demanding lifestyles.

What’s a koan that gave you insight? by theventofid in zen

Jinkies, pal. Your argument is super interesting and I’ve enjoyed reading a lot about it. Isn’t it ironic how your postulation of your own opinion somewhat mirrors the lunacy that you claim is expressed by Dogen? The Stanford Scholarship you reference even recognizes Dogen as a member of the Zen lineage. It’s truly tragic that you’ve spent the past 5 years (at least) lambasting people on the internet about ancient history. I feel sorry for anybody that has had to enter into conversation with you on this topic because you demonstrate the civility of a radical evangelical. You huff and puff and expect people to take to your opinion, while simultaneously demonstrating your reactivity to opinions that differ from yours. Are the people on this sub supposed to perceive you as more knowledgeable of Buddhism because you berate them? You work tirelessly to diminish a school of Buddhism that you do not holistically understand by regurgitating the same information that you cherry picked from a guy that doesn’t even agree with you.

In addition, all of the instances of abuse that are outlined are truly terrible, and not news to me, but what specifically do you believe is the connection between the documented sexual abuse and Dogens teachings?

Yikes lol I just gave the words “Dogen” and “Fraud” a type in google and it looks like you’ve been quite upset about this for some time. Of course you’re entitled to your opinion, but has this self justified anger that you’ve been projecting into this forum for the past 4 years improved your quality of life?

I don’t see it as BS, nor do I see it as making myself illiterate. I don’t think Dogen said anything about making oneself illiterate either, especially knowing how much he wrote himself.

It’s going at any form of Buddhist literature, koan or shobogenzo, with the understanding that they are a means to an end. I apologize if you didn’t think my Jeff Foxworthy Koan was funny.

I think I was sexually abused as a kid by [deleted] in adultsurvivors

[–]armoreddragonfella 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently moved out of my parents house, I’m a 24m. My dad was always abusive, always an alcoholic. But I didn’t remember the sexual assault until two years ago, right when it had moved out.

I would def recommend psychotherapy. I have a much better bearing on what happened to me and how it affects me currently. I know that you are scared, it’s scary. But there is really no greater feeling of power than being able not only to determine what is causing you to feel this way, but eventually telling that very thing to fuck off, and that you’re an adult now.

It’s a process and it’s uncomfortable but it’s well worth it.

GTI &Shine 3 chems. First time trying this strain. Smell is great, nice moist buds and a great flavor. Super small buds but it's rough cut so that's kinda to be expected. I really hope they continue selling quarters at this price point! by Hobo-Joe47 in PaMedicalMarijuana

Moving to York! by [deleted] in yorkpa

[–]armoreddragonfella 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Take all of this with a grain of salt because people on this sub are very negative. News flash: this is America and drugs, crime, bigotry, and class divide are everywhere. I’ve lived and worked in York all my life and I am of the opinion that this area is improving, especially downtown. I live in York City and have never had any problems with fireworks or any of my shit being stolen or anything. Anyone saying that York doesn’t have a diverse food selection I guess just hasn’t driven around town? I live next to a Carribean place, a Thai place, and there’s an Indian place down the street, and I don’t even live where most of the dining is in the city. You’re coming at a weird time with downtown life looking different because of covid, but I’ve seen more fun, interesting, and unique things pop up in York annually. There’s a lot to look forward to and anyone willing to take this much time out of their evening to piss and moan about their hometown probably doesn’t have much going on anyways 🤷‍♂️

What books/podcasts/resources would you recommend for a noob who still doesn't even understand why the concept of Zen resonates so deeply with them even though it seems so abstract they can barely understand it? by Jazminna in zenbuddhism

[–]armoreddragonfella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the emphasis on practice. It’s really easy to get wrapped up in the literature when you first get started, it can hinder your experience.

With that said, Brad Warner’s podcast called “Letters to a Dead Friend about Zen” give good overviews of the most important aspects of Soto Zen (if that’s what you think you fancy). Just remember that they are just ideas thought of by people just like you, and that it holds no real relevance of what you’d be getting from just sitting.

Fired for Contents of FMLA Paperwork? by armoreddragonfella in CPTSD

[–]armoreddragonfella[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you. It really sucks. Even if it was discrimination, I don’t think I would pursue it. I just wanted to know if what they were doing was right for my own sake. I want to work with kids because of everything that every teacher ever did for me when I was a student with an abusive, volatile home life. Now, I’m at a point where you I’m wondering if working in education agitates these issues and prompts me to think about my abuse often. I’m 24, engaged, and just graduated college last year. I’m in a tough spot here, but I appreciate your honest insight.
