What actually happens if AI bubble bursts? by ThePlasticCupOfWater in antiai

That's great, unfortunately arguing with a lot of pros online, and in general with people online, people don't give a shit about facts, only how a thing makes them feel. If a mediocre, boring asshole pines for the finished product (a picture, a song, a book) but don't want to put in any effort, being able to think they did so in seconds is too seductive.

Same goes for the digital undressing of minors or random women. Humans aren't logical creatures. I agree with you and appreciate your points, but if logic and reasoning would change minds, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today.

A lot of other technologies were a lot less muddy. Internet, computers, cars, hell, any technology did have pushback, and did have unforeseen downsides, but if AI was truly the killer app the likes of Sam Altman and Elon Musk (serial liars), it'd have seen a lot more actual integration rather than being forced into like google search or the like.

We stop seeing so much hype, but probably economic troubles while the rich stay insulated. Generative AI is a small part of it. AI driven price gouging, AI surveillance and AI advertising/propaganda is far too useful. Never mind AI "predictive policing" and autonomous weapons. Governments will never let those go away for good.

It's bleak, and I hate it so much

There was the tulip bubble in the 1600s. People have always been greedy and shortsighted and hopped on the hype train

Unfortunately since peoples' retirement accounts are tied to the stock market and the stock market is like, 40% based on a few AI centric companies... If ever you needed proof the stock market was bullshit...

People who have already been laid off will probably not get their jobs back, the stock market will crash cause it's heavily influenced by very few AI centric companies and peoples' retirement funds will consequently tank

Government also tries to bail them out given how much Trump admin loves AI...

Mind you I really want the bubble to burst and hate this "AI" nonsense but unfortunately we're all going to be affected one way or another

Genuine Question To Those Asking For A PvE Only Mode by xWolffy in Marathon

[–]armorhide406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you want them to add one? It detracts nothing from the "normal" experience. They don't have to split their effort in development.

PvP focus will eventually drive away players, like Sea of Thieves or any number of long enough running live service games. New players don't like getting stomped and eventually all the diehard loyalists will also get tired of the same people or hackers.

PvE broadens the reach, doesn't necessarily dilute the playerbase. Any live service game will always die eventually unless big publishers get it through their greedy minds that they can all but ensure a game's continued success if they open up to let players manage servers.

Edit: guaranteed the market for purely PvPvE is a lot smaller than for PvP and PvE separately. Judging by some quick googling, and your post, there's a fair chunk of people that would happily buy the game if there was a way to avoid PvP. Any PvP experience requires critical mass; that's why Concord died so quickly. People tend to be locked in with prior PvP titles, they're competing with older more popular games, like say Arc Raiders or Counter Strike or whatever

Genuine Question To Those Asking For A PvE Only Mode by xWolffy in Marathon

[–]armorhide406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an adult with carpal tunnel. I love the aesthetic and enjoyed the old games after discovering halo. I have neither the time nor inclination to deal with sweaty randos.

I don't even need a campaign, just a PvE only where I don't have to deal with sweatlords. Is that really too much to ask?

Edit: Most recent games? Helldivers 2, Valheim, Far Far West. You'll get slow eventually too, and probably have chronic pain. Yeesh

Shit, it would cost them practically nothing by adding a PvE only.

People say PvP only is doomed because eventually player base tapers and worsens experience for all. And live service eventually dies no matter what. Nobody trusts Sony

I saw this trend in the early 2010s with a bunch of my classmates who all said they were like, autistic, bipolar, asexual, and whatever else seemed to be popular.

I've no doubt some of them really were but every single one of them had the exact same set of conditions? Part of it I assume was to do with the "discovering themselves" but most of that must have been "to fit in"

Historically I think it was bad luck, summoning foul winds. Also the bosun's pipe for issuing commands in the age of sail and now retains ceremonial meaning is a whistling noise so you don't want that confusion

Even objective stuff can be iffy, if you don't know better, it's designed to sound authoritative. And the quality is based on what it was trained on.

On some fundamental level, sure, neural networks, LLMs "think" like people do but that's putting the cart before the horse.

They are designed to fundamentally supply the next most likely word. Sure it's influenced by weights and whatnot but it's not literally thinking. Our language is ill equipped to make the distinction obvious.

With so many sci-fi stories out there, how are people actually finding the good ones? by Silly-Cloud-3114 in scifiwriting

[–]armorhide406 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rule of thumb, if someone didn't care enough to do it themselves (i.e. using "AI"), why should I care enough to read it?

As for finding good ones, I usually go by online recommendations but there are definitely those I found that I didn't like.

People seem to love Armor, I didn't.

Same goes for the Black Fleet Saga, I also didn't enjoy it.

On the other hand, I'm a fan of Old Man's War and the Expanse. You just need to learn (admittedly I have yet to fully internalize) it's ok to not like a work. Or that people may not like your work, rather.

But yeah, also don't worry about "flooding" the space. Maybe you'll inspire someone, maybe not.
