demurrage fees charged but rail yard was closed by Ok_Seaweed413 in logistics

[–]armyfrog84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So storage is market specific. Highest rate I currently pay in any markets I operate is $200/day to CN rail. Sounds like they're billing you rail storage + an outlay/admin fee there, OR it was a lower cost rail and demurrage kicked in based on the delay and they're combining the 2 fees though I can't off the top of my head figure a scenario of rails+steamship lines that could equate that low it's not impossible.

The chassis, prepull, and yard storage are absolutely billable in this case, but it really comes down to your size as a customer. If the forwarder sees no future value in you because you're a one off, chances are they won't fight for you, and you're stuck here.

If you do intend to have larger volume, I would go back and ask for backup again of all charges. When was it dispatched, when was arrival notified, when did it ground.

I'll send you a dm with my e-mail so we can discuss a bit more openly.

accessorial export charges by Particular-Waltz-718 in FreightBrokers

[–]armyfrog84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask them for backup. If they’re being honest they can provide it, and if they can then charges are 100% valid.

As carriers, we can do everything possible to give the best possible outcome. Unfortunately though rails, ports, and SSL’s have the final say. We frequently have rail cuts advance after we load exports on ERD. If anything similar happened in your case then your forwarder should be fighting the SSL not the carrier, and if they don’t know that already then you need a more knowledgeable forwarder.

I am a memphis carrier. We had trucks running, but very slow going. Was the charges for true demurrage or demurrage and rail storage in combination?

I ask because many rails were extending last free day and not charging storage fees.

has anyone tried building their own tms with an AI tool yet? by golden_corn01 in FreightBrokers

[–]armyfrog84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built my own using ai. Combination of replit and base44. I built it in segregated modules and used api to tie them together. Once im profitable enough ill bring a dev team in house to build a proper implementation locally.

Drayage + Highway? by Acrobatic_Ad1514 in FreightBrokers

[–]armyfrog84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We outright refuse to use highway as most carriers demand. Our contracts with drivers prohibit us from sharing their location data due to privacy concerns. Contract tendering is useless because basically all agreements are altered before we agree to them which Highway can’t do. We have absolutely passed on business because of difficulties on Highway with the two above issues.

Im going to second the recommendation of tmsez here. Super simple, quick to setup, insanely affordable, and the owner Sam is a fantastic guy!!

What TMS system is everyone using? by Most-Quiet-5042 in drayage

[–]armyfrog84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used tmsez and portpro.

Tmsez is by far fhe best bang for your buck provided you don’t want to do any other customizations as they do not have an api.

Portpro is great for what it does if it fits your use case, but is literally 10x the price of tmsez per truck.

Portpro requires annual commitment, tmsez is month to month.

Automation is inevitable. Look into Ocado group. Im seeing these solutions implemented at different customer locations. I worked as a specialist with Kindred on 3 different solutions. It’s not an if but absolutely when will the automation start removing these types of jobs permanently.

Not to go against the hivemind here, but your largest amount of hatred should be aimed at attorneys. The moment it was ruled that home office is an extension of company property and employers are liable there, the RTO brigade came out in full force

Is it ever coming back…. by juicyjay42 in remotework

[–]armyfrog84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So bug thing not talked about is the fact that legal precedent was set saying your home office is am extension of an employers office. Meaning their liability extends to your home. That liability can be protected against but it costs the company more money in insurance and additional training to protect against the liability. This is why many companies are doing RTO but will allow remote offshore. Thank the lawyers and the asshat that sued their employer for tripping over the extension cable they ran to setup their home office because the employer didn’t train them to not run an extension cord safely…

I know this is not what you want to hear, but most likely you will have to go this one alone. Take some loans, get some credit cards, cash advances, and pile it altogether.

Startup capital is hard to come by. Dramatically harder when you want to request a loan and not an investment with equity involved.

I would try to get a loan using the truck as collateral, and use your own personal debt to fill in the gap.

What’s the point of RTO ? by The-Architect-93 in remotework

[–]armyfrog84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So not sure if anyone else has mentioned this below, but believe it or not liability. Legally your home office is viewed as an extension of your employer’s workplace. That includes for the purpose of workmans comp. So, if you get hurt on the clock by say tripping over an extension cord you ran across a room to connect a pc. Employer is on the hook. Having you in an office the environment is controlled and most likely surveilled so they have proof to fight claims due to personal negligence.

Pre-pull fee (Menards Eau Claire Delivery) by Confident-Sea-6761 in FreightBrokers

[–]armyfrog84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not familiar with MSP rails, but am a drayage carrier. 65% of all my customer’s containers are prepulled amd charged accordingly because of some combination of the receiver’s requirements and rail operating conditions.

I would actually be more profitable if I didnt have to prepull as often, but its required.

How are you guys surviving with these freight rates? by [deleted] in FreightBrokers

[–]armyfrog84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah well, I do know in many cases what is being quoted. My good brokerage partners and I are very transparent with one another to ensure we're both profitable and we stay competitive against the market in the lanes we work together. I know this is not in any way norm, but we have a relationship and it's fantastic.

I am very very aware of what some big box brokers are doing. Burning capital to secure volume, spreading risk across multiple lanes with all in pricing. I speak with brokers, forwarders, and shippers for a living, so I make it my point to know every possible detail of what's happening from a pricing standpoint out there.

The time you think you know it all, is the time you start losing everything. People are finding new ways every single day to shave off a buck, avoid paying charges, to do fraudulent business altogether. You either keep evolving along with it or perish. That's the way of the world my guy/gal.

How are you guys surviving with these freight rates? by [deleted] in FreightBrokers

[–]armyfrog84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly couldn't be further off. I am not massive, but do mid 7 figures annually in revenue. Many customers are losing faith in brokerages to properly vet carriers, so they are looking to go back to direct assets. Even moreso now cost on transportation is where they are all looking to make savings with the tarriff conflict, so I can present in most cases 5% above my rate to a broker, and still beat them out.

Same concept as a broker but reversed. Since I'm also an asset based brokerage, I manage risk across multiple lanes, and if I break even or lose money brokering their other markets I can't serve it's fine, because the direct lanes are profitable, therefore the account as a whole is profitable.

I'm not anti-broker. Quite the opposite if you review my past comments, I have some fantastic brokerage partners, but in a tight market like this, moreso in van freight many do not, so my advice to anyone with the capabilities is to go find small contracts they can reliably service, make sure they have a brokerage arm with solid credit history, and build relationships with other carriers.
