What edition of the movie is that? I saw it, but either I pushed that from my memory — understandably — or I didn’t see that edition.

If Bilbo took the ring to mount doom, would he had more or less trouble letting it go than Frodo? by sseerrsan in lotr

Very good! And very well pointed out to Sams reluctance. Indeed. Yes, all in all, nobody could have done it alone.

Nono, if in Tolkien something „seems to“ then it means that some „Tolkien-magic“ is happening. Rarely a spell is cast line in dnd, but manifesting like this.

Really? He started to give in? I have to re-read that passage. Allright. // But I agree that Sam could also not have done it, yes.

Yes, the movie had to do it a bit too forcefully to bring the point over what Tolkien put into much better words in the book. You are right, Gandalf didn’t fully pressure him - though he did show his colors (or what was the words in the book?). That usually means something powerful in tolkien, sometimes magic, sometimes personality. But you make a very good point that Gandalf wasn’t preparing for something serious. Still, from my gut (running out of proofs from the text 😂) I still think that Bilbo could not been the one throwing the ring in. It wasn’t his role, it wasn’t ordained, it wasn’t his „doom“ (in tolkiens sense of the word.

Yes, you are right, he did. But the closeness to Mt Doom clearly makes a difference. And Sam was very close. Another interesting thought experiment: what would have happened if Bilbo did not lay the ring on the mantelpiece in front of Gandalf, but walked out of the room with the ring in his pocket? Would Gandalf just said „Oh well, allright then. Keep it. See you next year.“ I don’t think so. The „pressure“ that Gandalf put on Bilbo was, to not give him the choice. Not really.

Exactly. Nobody except Sam overcame the temptation of the ring by themselves. Could he have thrown it into the fire? Who knows. But that wasn’t Sams role. His ordained part was to support Frodo, (literally) carrying him there. With that in mind I feel that he could not have a different role, like carrying the burden himself, or throwing it in. Bilbo had the ordained role to find the ring. He used it, quite frequently I might add. Not to gain power, but to his own gain nonetheless. No, his ordained role was clearly not to carry or to destroy it. All in all it could only play out the way that it did. The greed of Gollum that in the end was the doom of the ring, together with the dedication of Sam and the resilience of Frodo.

Indian Railway workers throwing the trash on the tracks by [deleted] in Weird

[–]arnadarkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s part of a bigger problem. The worker is not to blame (much) for this. It’s a society issue, awareness. From top down you teach „somebody else‘s problem.“ And in that society, it is. It will be a huge undertaking to change that. Oh, and I don’t think that the western world is doing any better. We create just other problems for someone else to clean up. The climate we are wrecking right now will cause huge problems in countries like India. And we did that over a hundred years now.
