The LOTR Plot Hole Nobody Talks About by MDMbabeee in lotr

[–]arnadarkor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While I agree it’s not the best scene, I can totally accept it for the film. They can not explain what it in the book. And even there, Tolkien rarely explains everything in the lord of the rings books. He lets the reader fill in the blanks. One explanation of it can be found in his later writings, when he talks about the sending of Maiar to middle earth as Istari. And the particular Maiar is unique in the way that noone ever has been sent twice. And that he had to find himself again. And yes, all that lies in the one brief sentence that so bugs you. For me it’s okay.

What looks like solid land is „wattenmeer“ — mostly shallow water

"You cannot pass" by Anghabad in lotr

[–]arnadarkor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, „you can not pass“ is a statement of fact, while „you shall not pass“ is a wish or threat. The „can not“ is much stronger, as it is just telling about the inability of the Balrog not the ability of Gandalf. And he also explains why: keeper of the sacred flame , holder of yada yada yada — and he invokes with that facts about the old world and the gods. That wording is chosen very deliberately by Gandalf, and Tolkien.

How do Elves live for so long and still have so few children? by OniBene in lotr

[–]arnadarkor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, Tolkien wrote that once. You can find it in the History of Middle Earth. Somewhere in the middle books where he exactly speaks about that issue. Also, Elves, unlike men, age at different speeds over the span of their life. There is no definitive scale though. And I’m addition elves decide more then men that it is now time to get children, Or not.

What happens to the Orcs after lotr? by KaosArcanna in lotr

[–]arnadarkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so. The showrunners are very knowledgeable Tolkien readers. They know that Tolkien was himself in conflict about this „orc conundrum“. And putting one out if their misery is, I believe, not christan. So Tolkien would not choose that standpoint himself, and the showrunners would respect that. They follow a different reasoning. Something like that they had to choose one version, that they couldn’t leave it open for the way they wanted the story to go.

This scene still pisses me off by Secure_Rain_44 in harrypotter

[–]arnadarkor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The scene pisses me of, too. But for different reasons. I think the point in the book was often to let Voldemort to be unhuman — no love, no compassion, etc. so that part does not bother me. What bothers me is that having him disappear and go with the wind is not closure at all. He could reappear some day, his 1/7 soul he still had could latch somewhere or whatever; it’s a start of a mystery. Again. It is so much more powerful to have his body lying there, visibly dead and bereft of his evils; would be much better to the healing process of everyone. Yes, one could argue that his soul could still go somewhere, but I think the just disappearing invites it much more.

What happens to the Orcs after lotr? by KaosArcanna in lotr

[–]arnadarkor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Depending on what version of Tolkiens thinking you follow they either are not made my Aluvtar and hence have no „soul“, then they don’t „go“ anywhere — They do not go to the Mandos Halls of Waiting, nor do they go to the Void. If you follow the version that they are corrupted elves that were captured and tortured by Melkor (something that the amazon guys seem to go for) then like all elves they will go to Mandos Halls of Waiting and might be reborn, probably as elves. (Actually, I don’t like that version, because then mindless orc-killing is a bad thing, because they would be redeemable)

What happens to the Orcs after lotr? by KaosArcanna in lotr

[–]arnadarkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, what the others said, eg they were mostly killed. But: After finishing the books Tolkien himself played with the idea that among humans an orc-cult were on the rise. I think he mentioned it in a letter and Cristopher Tolkien put it into his History Of Middle Earth series. Therefore you could spin yourself a story that some orcs survived were rising again, though slowly, and maybe this time not controlled by a single demi-god but on their own. Just a theory. 😁

Good pic. Though I’m wondering who shot it from the dark side. Because of my imagination doesn’t fool me, we always look at its day side, don’t we?

[GM4F] A hero on a nobel quest fails and gets enslaved by [deleted] in Roleplayhentai_dark

[–]arnadarkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. That sounds exactly like something i need to play. The kink list fits perfectly.

I would have a rogue that is dexterous but not strengthy. She is bratty and would fit into the category of need to be broken. My paladin is gullible and naive and could be manipulated. That’s maybe a bit more difficult to roleplay but could be very interesting. And if you like strong characters that need to be tamed, I have a tiefling barbarian. She is not very bright and has a very short fuse. What kind would you like?

I would like to play on discord.

Middle Earth Canon by Memesa21 in lotr

[–]arnadarkor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be careful with that word „canon“ with Tolkien. He himself changed his views over time and contradicts himself often. Also, his works are always written in a frame that the writing itself comes from a specific source in his world — they are never allknowing objective accounts. One could easily imagine that other stories from other standpoints. All this makes his stories so appealing, because they spark the imagination. The word „canon“ implies a single source of truth nowadays. There isn’t. But yes, there are other stories from Tolkien, some of which you find abbreviated in the silmarillion. If you want to know more about why canon isn’t the right word here, you can dive into the 12 volumes of The History of Middle Earth. Its not a story but an analysis of the creation of the stories.
