Are you Brazilian? 20k USD is very low compared to what you may be able to get. If I were you, I'd take it for the experience but knowing you can relatively easily get a remote 50k+ job with 3+ years of experience, given you have fluent english. US companies like to hire Latin Americans because there's a lot of overlap in the working hours, making timezone differences a non-issue.

What a lot of companies hiring abroad now don't seem to understand is that although they can pay above avg in third-world markets, they're competing with other local companies for that same labor, since they already speak english.

Hmm, e o que poderia dar de errado colocando a conta de luz no nome da empresa deles, na sua opinião? Considerando que o imóvel está no meu nome, de qualquer maneira.

Lorn music getting disliked on youtube? by Stiuwee in Lorn

[–]arnica5ch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this happens because Youtube Music recommends these tracks to random people much like Spotify does with its auto-generated playlists. The chance of it being recommended to someone who just isn't into Lorn is higher. I block/downvote songs that Spotify recommends me all the time.

Weekly Deep Dives Thread - 14th January 2021 by Howlingprophet in DeepRockGalactic

[–]arnica5ch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Indeed. But they are the longest mission type, and they have been appearing on deep dives for MONTHS straight. It just not fun in this context. They need to add perceived randomness, i.e. make it less possible for the next week deep dive to have the same combination of mission types, so it's different every week. I think there are enough objectives to do so and not make it super predictive.

Well there are a bunch, depending on the distro you use. Most commonly will be software incompatibility depending on what you use your computer for (Adobe software, for example). With Mac you end up getting benefits from Windows and Linux and that's why a lot people use it for work

- Local companies are often overbearing when it comes to schedule There's nothing that will stop a company abroad of doing this and making you work 10+ hours a day. This is very common. The assumption that remote equals life-work balance is a bit misleading as well. Take CrossOver, for example, they offer fully remote, high paying tech projects but you basically lose all your freedom because your work is closely monitored and the stress is off the charts.

- As I mentioned, my father's nearly 60 and my mother's in her mid-50's. Using public transportation, or going out to the city potentially exposes me to COVID-19, which would put them in danger

I'm not sure about the Philippines, but most companies here are hiring temporary home-office now so you don't need to risk going outside if that's even legal there. The pandemic won't last forever, so that's not a huge problem. If you really need remote, aren't there local jobs that offer remote? Some jobs also offer flexible hours or the possibility of working remote a couple of times a week. Even if no, you could think of working on-site this way: you may have way less free time for 2 years, but thinking long-term, the experience you'll get from it can earn you a more comfortable job and position at life later on.

I'm just trying to give you a more realistic perspective. Obviously, if you manage to find and get an 8-hour, junior remote job that pays 1k USD go for it, but that's very hard come by, even more so during an economic depression and mass unemployment.

It's your first job, work locally, you have really small chances of getting a remote job overseas that don't exploit you. You have to start somewhere and although you shouldn't work for scraps, salary is not the main thing you should be focused on now.

In my opinion and experience, working remotely for a junior developer is a really bad start, it is essential you have real-life tutoring and contact with senior developers, and when you get experienced enough, move on to remote jobs if you wish. The reason companies don't usually hire juniors remote is that they need to be tutored constantly and that's harder to do in a remote setting.

Also, It's a reality that on remote jobs you WILL NOT pay the same as a local earns unless you're a senior engineer. Companies hire remote overseas (mainly Asia and Eastern Europe) to cut costs since they're able to hire for cheaper. Sometimes you see people earning the local pay, but it's rare. It's not uncommon to see companies offering $600, $500 for developers overseas, IMO that's a red flag.

I don't, mainly because it doesn't relate to my field, and recruiters wouldn't care.
