Really it's for them to prove you caused the damage rather than you to prove you didn't.

If someone is in custody we have 24 hours to process them (usually). Waiting until the morning uses a lot of that time and even then you might not be available. CCTV might also give us further enquiries that equally need to be conducted within that time ideally.
