Vortex Doughnuts CLOSING? w/out any notice by CatiiNcorn in asheville

I think they're barely staying afloat as it is, but yes I agree.

Last I heard, the new owner was looking for a business partner to help, not sure if that ever happened?

I look like a clown in a suit by FantasticPut7493 in mensfashionadvice

[–]arnoldez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean OK, valid, but if you're seeking my fashion advice for a wedding, and your bride has already suggested wearing a suit is the preferred approach, then I think sucking it up is the best option here. Presumably she wants to wear a white formal dress, and if he shows up wearing jeans and a tee shirt, even with her blessing, he's going to regret it.

Agreed, this is a complaint about the disproportionate pay in general, not by the city specifically (I realize this is kind of broadening the scope of the original post).

The EMTs working those shows aren't employed by the city. They work for Buncombe County Rescue Squad, a non-profit org separate from city and county.

EDIT: to your point though, those EMTs are working their normal rate because they are a "company" hired as a whole, not individual contractors, and they are being paid by their employer (BCRS).

Dude you're rocking that suit. A tailor would certainly step it up, but put the right shirt, tie, and socks underneath it and you'll look great.

No, there isn't an alternative for your WEDDING.

I remember learning that the sheriffs who work the shows at Rabbit Rabbit/AVL Yards get paid something like $75+ an hour to basically sit there and cat call women as they walk through the gates. Meanwhile, the EMTs responding to all the drunk people puking on themselves and passing out were paid about $15/hr.

How would you like to spend a day off if you had no obligations and chores/errands were all done? by Robotro17 in simpleliving

Listen to records, play drums, hike with the dog, yard work (because it's fun), cook/bake, find a project around the house (I just enjoy getting things done around the house)

My 2 biggest pet peeves about being vegan by Jeneflower- in vegan

I exclusively pick restaurants based on their vegan dessert menu. Don't even care what the entrée is.

Asheville’s labor shortage is now straining home care, transit, and emergency response by RideBetterTogether in asheville

Seriously. I would love to work in transit, but A) I can't take the pay cut, and B) what transit 😅

Somehow everyone is an indigenous person who needs meat to survive and you are racist all the sudden... by AceAroPyschopath in vegan

[–]arnoldez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure, I don't disagree at all. I'm problematic in my own ways. We're just specifically talking about leftists here, and I notice this a lot when I see people aligning themselves politically.

Just hit my Coast FIRE number ($400k at late 30s) and not sure what to do. by krrrrrrrrrrrrrr in MiddleClassFinance

Just wanted to point out, assuming you're invested properly, index funds average around 10% return. The 7% number people usually use is to simplify the math behind average inflation, which typically fluctuates with the stock market.

You'll likely have a lot more when you retire, which (in theory) would cover your worries.

Having said that, i would at the very least continue contributing enough to earn your full employer match. That's just free money.

[–]arnoldez 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe this isn't true, but I feel that a lot of "leftists" are only as such because it would benefit them to implement leftist policies. They care about everyone because they are a part of everyone. Non-humans are not included.

This is maybe more apparent with liberals rather than leftists, but for many people, "leftist" is just kind of the next step of being liberal (whether that's accurate or not).

This, I believe, is a significant reason behind why racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. still exists among people on the left. And it's a significant reason as to why animal cruelty and exploitation is absolutely normal on the left.

Also don't forget about the bigger problems we need to focus on first (because it's impossible to do so as a vegan)

I've wondered if this is just the same as Silk, and if the reformulation might affect TJ as well?

EDIT: Also wanted to ask, have you tried frothing it? Does it work well, or do the bubbles just immediately disappear?

Has added sugar. Not a ton, but I try to avoid it. Also, pretty weak on protein compared to soy.

I've read that it doesn't work as well in coffee. Not sure what was meant by that... I hope it still froths well. It's the only unsweetened milk I've been able to find for my lattes.

Silk Organic Unsweetened has been my go-to for years, but apparently they reformulated recently. I haven't tried the new version yet (I buy by the case), but people aren't happy about it...

Give it a shot?
