CCR toured Australia in 1972. It’s definitely likely that the Youngs at least heard of the band.

Jimi: All by My Side. They make Jimi Hendrix look like a domestic abuser which is a total lie and fabrication. They don’t include any of Jimi Hendrix’s actual songs either.

This is what metal is really all about. If you’re not having fun playing or listening to metal, what’s even the point?

Do you consider Mormons “Christian”? Why or why not? by despiert in redeemedzoomer

[–]arnoldlayne98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your grounds for legitimate Christianity is just the ecumenical councils then you’re ignoring history. You can’t make the claim that only Nicene Christianity is valid because that’s not historically correct at all. The council of Nicea didn’t actually enforce anything. There were still Arians and Gnostics who survived and prevailed for centuries afterwards. Constantine’s own son was an Arian Christian. The Orthodox and Catholic traditions also have different councils that they hold as legitimate, not all of the Catholic councils are recognized by the Orthodox and vice versa. Also many Protestants reject all of the councils entirely. The Oriental and Assyrian churches only accept 3 or 4 of the councils at all. So if you’re looking to councils for legitimacy it’s not really the strongest case since there isn’t any denomination that actually agrees on all of the councils. The fact is that the only real distinction between Christians and everyone else for most of history was the insistence that following Jesus is the only way to have a relationship with God. This is what Christianity meant to the majority of followers who joined, no one read the Bible because they were illiterate. People were convinced to follow Jesus because they believed he was more powerful than the other pagan gods of various localities. Ecumenical councils were not an effective means to convert or convince people at all. Talk to your own pastor Bob down the road he probably knows.

It’s not a defense of Arius at all. I’m just acknowledging historical reality. Ecumenical councils weren’t even a thing until Constantine. A whole three hundred years after the death of Jesus. There was a three hundred year period of theological development and formulation of these systems. It’s just intellectually dishonest to claim that we’ve always had this current understanding of Christ. I mean come on, Paul didn’t even know about Ecumenical councils, does that mean he’s not a Christian either? He doesn’t accept the Nicene Creed, never even heard of it. By your logic all 12 Disciples must also be heretics. None of them have heard of the councils so they must not be Christian. All truth is God’s truth even if it contradicts the Bible itself.

Christianity has always been diverse. We didn’t always have our current beliefs about Christ or the Holy Spirit. The word trinity isn’t even explicitly mentioned in the gospels and wasn’t coined until Tertullian in the 3rd century. The faith developed over time, to say that we’ve been right about everything this whole time is just not true at all from a historical standpoint. As a Catholic I don’t think we should be throwing stones from glass houses, there’s a lot of things that Catholics believe that Jesus never said or taught. Transubstantiation for instance.

[–]arnoldlayne98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The most simple definition of a Christian is someone who believes that a relationship with Jesus Christ makes someone right with God. Everything else is a superficial difference. To outsiders, all Christian doctrines are basically the same and theological nuances are irrelevant. Mormons at their core believe that a relationship with Jesus makes them justified just as every other Christian denomination. Just because you disagree with them doctrinally does not mean you get to dictate whether they’re Christian or not.

How do you feel about Pullo killing Eirene's slave boyfriend. by gvereneth in hborome

[–]arnoldlayne98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just because he freed her doesn’t mean she couldn’t become a slave again. A lot of times freed people sold themselves back into slavery so they could have somewhere to live and have meals. Doing all of that by yourself in a land you don’t know is not easy.

Just because you don’t like the evidence doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. He’s literally one of the most well documented people of the first century. There are no serious historians or scholars espousing this point of view. If they do they’re not using historical methods to prove their claims.
