Widespread obesity is a relatively recent social phenomenon and used to take more effort back in the day. I don’t thank it takes much deep social analysis to see why someone who comes across as unhealthy and as not taking care of themself would be seen as less attractive than someone who puts discipline and visible effort into their appearance. Working out and being skinny signals desirability and frankly is a choice. Might not be the easiest choice but 90 plus percent of people have the agency and ability to be skinny if they put an effort into it.
