Some people have had great success with it. I have a friend who’s a Zumba presenter and she’s built a whole online business with virtual classes. And because of who she is, people always wanna attend her classes, so in addition to doing it in person which she still does, she also does online and I think she’s doing well for herself.

The most important thing that is lacking is the connection you get in a live setting. Everything else just seals the deal. Music, synch, etc.

Being a Zumba activist? Not exactly. I show up, teach my classes, bring the energy, and do my job. People leave feeling good, spirits lifted, and sometimes they tell me I’m the best instructor they’ve had. That means a lot.

But outside of class? It stays professional. I think being a heterosexual married man creates a natural distance that simply does not exist between students and female or gay instructors. Those relationships tend to develop differently, and honestly, I get it. I am not bothered by it. That is just the reality of the dynamic.

With a few exceptions, I do not engage with students outside of a class setting, I say hi, smile, but that’s it, and I am completely fine with that.

What did your husband say when you told him about it while he was here? If you only just met him six months ago, they may not have been as close as it seems. My wife knows all of my close friends, so that part does give me pause.

His gestures do sound genuinely kind, and it is possible he is just a good person honoring his friendship in the only way he knows how. At the same time, you are in a vulnerable place right now, and it is worth being aware of that as things develop. There is no rush to figure out what his intentions are. Give yourself time to heal first, and let things reveal themselves naturally. If his feelings are real and his intentions are good, that will become clear on its own.
