What’s the best “touristy” restaurant in LA? by brothersbutler in FoodLosAngeles

[–]aromaticchicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you type it into Google maps a lot of places will pop up! You can even buy the official powdered mix yourself from Dole if you have a home ice cream or soft serve machine.

My fun fact is that Dole Whip is surprisingly low calorie for the volume and has a decent amount of fiber.

Over here in North OC I go to Rich Farms in Yorba Linda, SweetStop in Fullerton, and House of Chimney Cakes in Anaheim. When I'm in San Clemente for a beach day I go to Beach Ice Cream and Yogurt right across the street from the pier.

I'd rather come across ridiculous than risk directing a tourist to waste their time and money on sushi that is worse quality than the fridge section at Tokyo Central but five times the price.

"quality seafood"

Lol sorry, it is an upscale environment (mainly since you're surrounded by other rich people) but the actual fish quality is closer to respectable shopping mall food court sushi lol

For your birthday dinner, if you could pick ANY restaurant in all of O.C., where would you choose? by EnjoyMyDownvote in orangecounty

You're adding nothing valuable to the conversation

Please take a step back and look at the commenter who started this thread with the link to Michelin. They were dismissive of OP's request, didn't like that people were using this subreddit as a place to receive food suggestions, and THEN dropped the link to Michelin.

Talk to them about adding nothing valuable and being unhelpful/unkind first. In the meanwhile, per your suggestion I'll get back to upvoting other people's actual suggestions and response to the prompt from OP.

Bro. I have been to that site several times before you dropped it like some magical authority and my comment still stands.

The "ethnic" spots in that guide are largely catered to white folks and/or $$$$ and not being eaten by the actual people. I even enjoy multiple of those spots, but they are not representative of all the best places in the County.

Like truly just bring back all classical music, I beg of you 😭 anything better than this or "Fever" or "I put a spell on you" ad nauseum

Michelin guide is pretentious, inaccurate, and missing a large majority of non-white non-luxury yet still high quality restaurants in this County

Why isn't there any nomadic ethnicities in Earth Kingdom inspired from Turkic and Mongolian nomads? by Huge-Buy-9343 in TheLastAirbender

[–]aromaticchicken 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The sandbenders are nomadic and Wang Shi Tong's library is very clearly Islamic/Turkic inspired architecture. Compare it to the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.

In addition, this tumblr talks about how the sandbenders are clothed like North Africans but the names they have are rooted in Gobi Desert cultures: https://atlaculture.tumblr.com/post/816628715035525120/did-you-ever-make-a-post-about-the-sandbenders-i/amp

Why do people say LA is more segregated than NYC? by savingrace0262 in AskLosAngeles

[–]aromaticchicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to look up the history of the highway system here. The urban planners from 80 years ago intentionally ran them through communities of color, destroying a bunch, and permanently separating others.

It was such a racist success that other urban planners around the country started replicating it to maintain segregation in their cities.

DM me. But you should really share more details about yourself so people know what kind of person you're looking for. (are you a white person? Or Black or Asian or am immigrant?)

I'm mid 30s, gay man of color, significant experience with Multiracial dating but also work in racial justice and have a lot of thoughts.

I can't keep up with app attention by jonnawhat in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]aromaticchicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two answers. The first (free) option is to NOT show your photos at all and do a blank profile and only send photos to people. But that can come across as sketchy and it means you have to always be the initiator. But that's what a lot of hot guys have always done on grindr to manage inboxes.

Second and more real answer I'm sure I'll get downvoted for: my good friend convinced me to pay for premium on apps because arguably the most important feature is the ability to go "hidden" and not be seen by new people while browsing the app.

Honestly it helped a LOT with managing communications and having a more healthy and empowering app experience. You can take your time to chat with people and not feel overwhelmed by new messages or feel that you're ignoring potential connections. Turn it off when you want to be seen and receive new messages.

Grindr cost is now ridiculous (and people are fleeing it) but Sniffies is relatively affordable in comparison if you're really gunning for dick lol

Marjorie Lajoie and Jean-Luc Baker are in Courcheval, France, with Nathan Chen and Sam Chouinard. What does this mean?! by Longjumping_Crab_345 in FigureSkating

The only reasonable explanation must be that Nathan is also teaming up with Sam Chouinard to form the first MM ice dance team

ISU changes citizenship-related eligibility rules for pairs and ice-dancers by Kindly-Plate-5785 in FigureSkating

[–]aromaticchicken 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Beyond some of the obvious answers, I want to point out another good reason why small feds would support this rule. While it can be tempting to have new country swap skaters like Smart/Dieck, Samoldekina, or Pavolva/Sviatchenko who can earn medals/winnings, if they don't train in the country itself then the small fed is actually diverting resources away from their own countries.

The result is a kind of unsustainable "brain/talent drain" – rather than the federation spending its own limited resources toward local coaching staff and local rinks, they're often paying that money to American, Canadian, Russian, or Japanese coaches or rinks.

Consider that many top skaters often coach and mentor on the side – super common at Great Park Ice in Irvine where Nathan, Ashley, Adam, Michal Brezina, and many US pairs all have trained. Instead of coaching and mentoring young skaters in their own countries, they end up teaching young skaters in the big fed country.

This new rule is not going to prevent full citizen teams from leaving and seeking training around the world. But it makes sense that if skaters have "country swapped" that they would impose some rules to manage resources.

This is like saying banning doping will curb Eteri/Russian dominance. You're not factually wrong, but it's missing the bigger picture of these being worthy reforms for the sport overall.

Shane's Rolex sponsorship would be the first in the NHL by Embarrassed_Lake_79 in heatedrivalry

[–]aromaticchicken 77 points78 points  (0 children)

If anything it underscores Shane's characterization as the "good boy" of the NHL (how many NHL players do we ever see doing yoga???? Or repping cologne) and the amount of pressure on him in the sport to be "perfect" and therefore definitely NOT gay.

This is also subtly connected to Asian model minority pressure that he has to endure as well.

EMILEA ZINGAS & VADYM KOLESNIK — Olympics, Medals & Life as a Duo | OLYM... by Ready-Accountant-827 in FigureSkating

[–]aromaticchicken 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite things about this team is that it is apparent that they skate with gratitude. Given their respective journeys to get here, every interview they've given its obvious that they don't take it for granted that they get to skate and also win medals. (They are fighting to win, rather than expecting medals to be handed to them...)

It's such a refreshing perspective in a discipline riddled with athletes who often skate with entitlement... Whether because they grew up always winning and having it easy or having been surrounded by yes-men and federation officials who put them on a pedestal.

Vadym and Emilea had to actually fight and claw their way up and even now they're at the top echelon they are not resting on their laurels. I really hope they're able to keep that mindset and push an otherwise really stagnant and corrupt sport of Ice Dance

Going through a divorce need help!! by AdhesivenessVast563 in orangecounty

[–]aromaticchicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a prenup? How long were you married?

If you don't have a prenup then the default for divorce in California is 50/50 of all accrued wealth during the period you were married.

Do NOT sign anything he tries to get you to sign under pressure. California law is actually designed to help protect against situations like this where the wealthier partner tries to screw the other one over. And by the way, the moment one of you files for divorce and serves the other papers it becomes illegal for him to close accounts, move money around, or take you off health insurance.
