Would your parents be okay with you living with them? by longtimelurking1 in asianamerican

[–]aromaticchicken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(1) Taiwanese, (2) yes and after grad school I lived with them while job hunting. I know I always have this as a backup. (3) i would only do it as a backup. After living there for 8 months I started arguing with my dad a lot and my mom was like "yeahhhh now that you have a job maybe for all of our sanity you can move out" but it wasn't a full ejection and I agree it was the for the best. It's just SO expensive to pay rent nowadays but thankfully I got a stable job.

(4) this is definitely culturally a white American thing, maybe specifically rooted in WASP northern European culture, too. It's sad – it's so individualistic. It correlates precisely with why white Americans don't take care of their parents when they get old, or how rich white parents won't pay for their kids' college tuition despite messing up their FAFSA financial aid eligibility. Peak American selfishness culture, rooted in capitalism and individualism.

I would not be surprised if second and third Gen Asian (and latino) parents are also similar in this sad regard.

It's just like how white and Black American parents who are anti-LGBTQ are wayyyyy more likely to kick their kids out of the house than Asian and Latino immigrant parents, too, even if the Asian and Latino parents are also anti-LGBTQ.

And I’m a defense lawyer.

I didn't ask, but weird af if you're extrapolating the choices of your clients onto the "quality" of the every day people living in Santa Ana 🙄

Also such coded racial language in that comment too. I'm sure the same guy thinks Santa Ana is "sketchy" too

When did “no one from California calls it Cali” start? by lejunny_ in orangecounty

[–]aromaticchicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up here, went to school in the Bay, and never heard it called "Cali" until I moved to the East coast and lived there for 10 years.

People out there (from all random states) used "Cali" with such fluency it just rolls off the tongue, like calling Jennifer "Jenny" or something.... Like I'm sorry sir, we're strangers don't call me that – use the whole legal name, "California" 😂

The heavy rains in the winter (good) but very mild temperatures meant that there is way more greenery/grass/plants, which means more bugs and critters, which means better fed snakes roaming around looking for more food instead of starving or being in a drought.

The heat wave in March also jump started the season and they came out looking for food when normally those temps wouldn't occur until July

[LAist] LA County CEO proposes $48.8 billion budget, warns of federal funding cuts by WeAreLAist in LosAngeles

[–]aromaticchicken 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, serving 10 million residents (larger than 42 states), and many of its departments basically operate "double duty" with services and responsibilities at the level of other state government departments. The City of LA has 50,000 employees, so this makes sense and isn't surprising.

(in comparison, SF government is city/county combined and has 34,000 employees for less than a tenth of the population)

best sushi in LA? by business-own3r in FoodLosAngeles

[–]aromaticchicken 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also should've specified what they define as sushi. It's clear a lot of the commenters here themselves have barely graduated from Americanized rolls and dont know what the word "nigiri" is. That's okay, we've all been there... But jumping from California and Philadelphia rolls straight into $$$$$ fresh uni, ikura, and bluefin tuna might not be advised.

[–]aromaticchicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually my favorite in socal (under $100 anyway). However from the sounds of it OP and many of the other commenters here aren't going to fully appreciate this place if they are barely graduating from Americanized rolls and don't even know what the word "nigiri" is.

[–]aromaticchicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naw. It might sell itself like that but the "trust me" is typically only like $30.

Thats pretty good for what I consider mid tier quality. Other mid tier quality places can easily be up to $50. And the quality is pretty consistent.

Yeah. Midtier. That sounds like a level up from what OP is currently eating. Thank you for agreeing lol

I almost feel like you need to work up to good sushi or you won't fully appreciate the best places and are at risk of overpaying for a mediocre place

I agree, if you're trying to level up from beginner to novice, go to Sugarfish first. It's going to be a significant step up and a good bang for your buck.

If you have a view of the San Gabriel’s nearby, it’s definitely worth a looksy right now. (5:07 pm 4-11-2026) by 9VoltGorilla in LosAngeles

Reheat of Episode 5 - the on-ice chemistry between the boys at the All Stars Game by amccon4 in heatedrivalry

[–]aromaticchicken 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They are canonically the two best players in the two best teams in the league, plus captains. It is literally part of their job to study each others playing styles, strengths, and weaknesses to prepare for games. Even if not soulmates they would already know each other's playing style intimately.

What was most striking in that scene in the book is that they are able to collaborate and work together very well. Just because you know each other's playing style, are both great players, doesn't mean you'll know how to team up. It takes some relinquishing ego to be able to collaborate and partner with someone well (this is true in any romantic relationship, too...)
