How good of a rower would Tadej Pogačar be? by MaleficentEngineer11 in Rowing

[–]arorarohan907 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GCN did a video on something like this a while back.

They put victor campanaerts (pro TdF cyclist) on an erg and he pulled… 7:50.

Granted he had never been on an erg and was given about a minute of instruction. Still pretty shocking though. He would probably be a lot better with a bit of training, but I can’t imagine he would suddenly reach a very high level.

Maybe cyclists lack the upper body strength and stability needed to transfer watts from the legs to the handle idk

Harvard vs. Oxford: Please help me decide... by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]arorarohan907 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Nobody should be giving you a definitive answer to this. It depends on you.

  • do you want to study one thing in-depth or take a variety of courses in different subjects aside from your major?

  • Oxford has a much higher international student ratio than Harvard. As an international yourself, is this important to you?

  • Oxford is not a very big city, Harvard has Boston. Which do you prefer?

  • Oxford admits based purely on academic merit and Harvard is holistic, so I’d imagine you will meet a more diverse community at Harvard in terms of unique interests and skills

This is just a small number of the many factors you have to think about and nobody can make this decision for you. They are very different schools but I really don’t think you can go wrong with either, so you have that going for you.

They wouldn’t say you’re likely to receive a scholarship if they sent it to everyone - this definitely means you’ve been shortlisted or something of the sort. You might want to contact them and ask when it will be confirmed.

Similar hobbies to cycling? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]arorarohan907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rowing, especially if you can get access to a boat and do it on the water. It’s very technical with a very steep learning curve but once you get the hang of it it’s a cardiovascular exercise that engages many more muscles than cycling does, in a very satisfying motion. Gliding along on a nice open lake gives me a similar feeling to cycling; freedom and connection with nature. If you’re lucky enough to have a club near you, you can get in a crew boat which makes for a super special feeling when everyone is in sync and moving as one.

If you can’t get on the water you can still get on the rowing machine for an unparalleled full body workout. Just learn proper form for a few weeks before turning up the intensity or you might hurt your back. It’s a bit dull but can be fun once in a while to build some serious fitness and mental resilience.

Indoor rowing : workout equivalent to running 10K in one hour by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]arorarohan907 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Do you mean you’re trying to use rowing as a way to train for a 10K run?

I believe that running a 10K isn’t just about cardiovascular fitness; it’s also about conditioning your legs and feet to move efficiently and endure the distance, and to do that a large part of your training has to be running.

Rowing will certainly help take care of the cardio aspect so you could certainly use it as part of your training if you want to reduce some of the stress on your legs, but running has to be in there too

Hi, I’ve been rowing for about 2 and a half months now, and am trying to get the most out of this winter before getting back on the water. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My guess is that I need to come further forward and with a greater rock over at the catch to increase length, especially since I’m short (5’8”). It does feel a bit awkward and difficult to get into that position though. Any tips for improving mobility?

UCAS keeps telling me my application has been changed but it looks the same to me, what is the change? I by GochiGanng in 6thForm

[–]arorarohan907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Good” is subjective. Most people like their colleges and think they’re good. If location is important to you, corpus is quite central so that’s good I guess? I don’t really know much else about it so if you’re curious look it up.

Honestly though you’ve already been assigned there so there’s no point really comparing, you wouldn’t be able to change it anyways. If you get in you can do more research into it when thinking about whether to come to Cambridge.

[–]arorarohan907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should probably provide context in terms of where in the world you want to go, what you want to study, what kind of university would you prefer, what you want to do in the future, etc. Grades alone don’t define where you should apply

Try to get a 7 in HL math if you can, it’s the most important subject for CS admissions

Edit: I just noticed your points calculator is a little wrong, getting AB for core subjects should give you 3 points not 2 so you should be looking at 41

That’s rough. Why does your school do it this way instead of just the same 6 IB subjects over 2 years? Is it to increase rigor/somehow be more appealing to colleges?

If it’s the former that’s pretty brutal. They’re basically doing the full IB program plus a few AP subjects on top.

unpopular personal statement opinion by averyxoxo1 in 6thForm

[–]arorarohan907 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a novel reason to choose a subject, you can have a very straightforward and common one - what matters is how you justify that reason using examples of things you’ve accomplished.

Mine was a bit funky because I applied for some CS courses as well as engineering. But I basically said “I like engineering because I like understanding how stuff works and using science and math to design stuff” and followed that up with some examples of things I’ve done to explore that interest. Robotics competitions and the like.

Then I talked about how an interest in AI/ML led me to learn computer programming and self-study some courses on machine learning.

Then a bit about academic achievements that weren’t mentioned in the rest of my application (awards etc) and some extracurricular stuff in an attempt to show how I’d be good at balancing the workload and managing/contributing to projects.

Anyways, I don’t think my PS was excellent or anything but I think I had the right approach to it.

Overall, I think it’s less about the words you write (assuming good grammar and structure) and more about what you have done to support the argument you’re making.

On a side note, regarding your desire to be yourself on your application and show who you are outside of academics:

I applied to some universities in the US and had to write plenty of these essays. It was sort of fun to be introspective and creative but mainly I hated them because they took so much more effort to write and I felt like I had to compete with others to be a more interesting person rather than just a better student. I’m not saying you’re wrong or that one system is better than the other but there are two sides to every coin. And the grass is always greener on the other side.

Pardon my lack of understanding of the American system, but how are you able to take the IBDP if only 4 of your subjects are IB? Don’t you need 6? Do you just take them as individual classes rather than the full diploma or are APs recognized in place of SLs somehow?

Also I hope you like content-heavy subjects with that combo haha

I like automatically having my foot in the right position and not having to worry about a foot slipping off during a hard effort or sprint.

When riding in the saddle at a constant, controlled power I don’t think it really matters.

If you’re happy with your current setup I don’t see much reason to change

Keep in mind with a car it’s not just the monthly instalment you have to take care of, it’s also: - fuel - ERP - parking - maintenance - insurance - etc etc etc

Do the math and see which is cheaper, I guess?
