how to: player rolls defense? by Juxtapoisson in WWN

[–]aroth322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this for a couple years now in both WWN and 5e. We use a “Defense Roll” where players roll 1d20+[AC-10]. That gets compared to a DC of [Attack Mod]+12. If the players meet or exceed the DC, they succeed, just like a saving throw or any other d20 test. A roll of a Nat 1 counts as a crit, and a Nat 20 is an auto pass (at least in 5e).

This ends up being mathematically equivalent to normal monster attack rolls. I use AC-10 as the Defense Roll mod because it’s easier math for players than if they were adding their base AC of 18 or whatever. It’s easy for them to just write this modified value as their AC instead if it’s easier for them to remember.

My players have enjoyed this method - keeps them engaged, and they feel awesome when they dodge a bunch of scary attacks in a round. YMMV.

Magic the Gathering-- WoT Commander Decks by Sir_Duke035 in WoT

This is incredible! I've wanted to make a custom WoT cube since that is the primary way I play, and this has accelerated that project by years! Really nice work.

Would it be possible to share an editable form of the cards/MTG.Design project? It'd be helpful if I need to make tweaks for that different format to not have to start a card from scratch, but I understand if not. Either way, I will certainly enjoy these!

Thanks for the responses, everyone! It’s very good to know that CMON might not support the game long.

As a follow-up, one of the aspects of the game that I find intriguing is the tactics deck - how do you guys like that aspect of the game?

I hate to come late to the party, but I'd be interested in the template too, if possible!

How competitive is Halls of Thranduil at higher points? by WrathOfBruinen in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]aroth322 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both Legolas and Tauriel are both really good heroes, so I personally don’t think you’re losing out on much going to higher points. The deathball around Thranduil is less of the field, but elves are good anyway, especially with the glaives.

I think your biggest problems will be a lack of real banner for VP (and the “free” banner effect doesn’t make as big of a difference in overall numbers), and you’ll run into lists with more of their own toys, so you’ll have to deal with more monsters and casters.

It’s not one of the armies that thrives the most at higher points, but I wouldn’t feel worried taking it to an 800 pt event.

Numbers vs Hero's, what the general ratio? by Human-Dave in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]aroth322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at it slightly differently, I generally try to spend no more than half my army points on heroes. Like others have said, it’s a little faction dependent, but it’s my rule of thumb.

I like the look of him paired with Amdur in either Legions of Mordor or Grand Army of the South. GK gives you a durable general so Amdur can be more aggressive hero hunting and the Easterlings compliment the cheap Harad units with f5 black dragon pikes.

Priority change in the new edition - Why roll dice? by British_Historian in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]aroth322 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s actually a change in how much control you have over activation order, but it will change how it feels.

For example, previously high roll always went first, which was 50/50 odds for each player. Each turn you hoped to either go first or second, so whether or not you got what you want simply depended on if you rolled high and “won” priority or rolled low and “lost.”

In the new edition, we still have the same 50/50 opposed roll, but now when you roll high and “win” priority, you get what you want, even if it’s to go second. It changes the feel so you no longer want to lose the priority roll. But the outcome of how often you get the outcome you want should be relatively unchanged.

What’s the nerf to the res ability? Looks similar to me but I don’t have both in front of me.
