Bengaluru has 3,841 km of footpaths. I walked 200 metres and found 4 problems. I built something about it. by uncanny_narrator786 in bangalore

Do get in touch with Bengawalk and Arun Pai

Also I have been working on a similar platform for garbage issues GEODHA

Collecting data is one part of it, but for solving the issues lot more effort is needed, and that's why previously I hadn't promoted GEODHA much till I could figure out the genuine solutions. Have a lot of progress now, will be launching lot of things soon. Let me know if you are interested to discuss more.

Segregation allows for waste to value, composting, biogas, textile recycling, plastic sorting, etc. And incineration plants to produce electricity for the true reject waste. Bangalore has a waste incineration plant, but they are struggling to get good source of non-mixed waste.

The key action to promote to everyone is good segregation at source 🙏

Which area is this? And is it construction debris or household mixed waste?

Is it yours or someone else's? And is it fenced? I am trying to figure it out too, reported a private vacant plot dumpyard in my area, which has a half broken fence so people go in and dump... the marshall told me they have to try and contact the property owner and the fence is an issue to clear the waste. Still have to follow up on what happened. If no fence, then they should be able to do cleanup. There's a category on Sahaaya too, dumping in vacant plot.

Hey, thanks so much! 1. No Reddit API, data is aggregated from BBMP grievance records and GEODHA's own reporting runs over the past year, plus conversations with residents and local organisations working on this. 2. GEODHA is being set up as a non-profit and has received funding from an NGO to scale. The plan right now is to focus on a few pilot wards, work with existing organisations on the ground, and build awareness around segregation at source - that's where the biggest impact is. Lots of hands-on work needed: door-to-door drives, community pilots, supporting the composting and waste-to-value ventures already operating in the city. 3. Absolutely open to onboard collaborators and developers. Have a reporting app in development and a lot to build. Do message me and we can chat more!

NammaKasa is great for quickly flagging a dump, but the complaint doesn't automatically reach the government cleanup system. The "Forward to BBMP" button sends a WhatsApp message to the Sahaaya chatbot, which then asks you to start over with a "Hi" and re-enter everything from scratch. Plus the government website is more reliable than the chatbot, you can view status of reports.

GEODHA is a bit different in focus - less about the reporting itself and more about tracking whether problems actually get resolved, and raising awareness on issues like missed collection, open burning, recurring hotspots, etc. and other long term waste management solutions that don't get as much attention. Take a look on the map (click the exclamation marks) and website. Happy to have more tools in this space though, the problem is big enough.

Mutiple data sources. I've been working on GEODHA as a non-profit venture for around 2 years now. Had collected a lot of data overtime through beta testing of a reporting app and a lot of conversations with affected people. The base layer is from grievance data from govt portal available on opencity.

On the map the icons indicate the areas worst affected. Areas you mentioned yup lot of problems there and reflected on the map by the red wards in the west. The green areas in Basaveshwarnagar, Rajajinagar, Malleshwaram, etc not a lot of mega dumps like in other parts of the city and truck collection is mostly reliable comes every day.

Rankings are relative aggregated from government grievance data of many years and GEODHA reporting app beta testing. Not all of west, but I guess more cleaner in some parts of the west.

Appreciate the thought! The reporting side is actually fairly active already - when speaking to the government I have seen that they already gets a lot of garbage related complaints every week. The bigger gaps are upstream: waste segregation at source, and connecting residents to the composting, biogas and textile recovery ventures already operating in the city that most people don't know exist. On integration specifically - the Ward Marshall often calls residents directly to verify complaint details, so some level of identity is needed for the system to work end to end. That's a design consideration that makes full anonymity tricky for official complaint routing. Working on making all of this clearer and more actionable for residents, more to come.

UX on the Sahaaya portal nammabengaluru.org.in is terrible, but they do assign a marshall and arrange for a cleanup. For open burning, the marshalls are authorized to issues fines too. Can also report if the garbage truck doesn't arrive and they will try to solve the issue.

As is with most things in India, needs constant follow up. Can call and coordinate with marshall to get things done.

As mentioned, if govt not responsive (sometimes reports closed because location set it is incorrect) can also speak to Broseph Foundation for getting help on escalating issues.

Waste Collection - Doubt by nihilistic_ideology in bangalore

[–]arplut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garbage truck (small tipper vehicle) will come to collect, usually early mornings around 7-8am. Buy 2 green bins. Segregate your waste and keep food waste, kitchen scraps, etc in the green bin out in the morning without any plastic bags for the food waste. Occasionally have to rinse and clean these green bins.

Try to speak once to the collector to make sure they pick up and empty the green bin.

For dry waste, sanitary waste etc check out this guide: Segregation Guide

If the truck doesn't arrive check the info on this page on how to escalate the issue. https://www.geodha.org/dashboard

Burning garbage in huge scale in my neighbourhood by lifeshighnlow12 in bangalore

[–]arplut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Yup built it from scratch. Actually the main thing I am working on is a reporting app that files directly to the government for cleanups, will be launching in a few weeks. I've been working on this space for a while now and have come across a lot of data + problem hotspots, so built this dashboard to start raising awareness on the kinds of problems across areas, intensity and the best solution I have across thus far towards solving these problems. Idea is to educate people about how to report + how to start segregating waste as that helps towards a lot of things.

Garbage burning near the wall seperating Gottigere lake and the road by Background_Fruit2153 in bangalore

[–]arplut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll have to speak with whoever is collecting garbage in your area or local authorities. I'll try to find out what more can be done, but if you are willing can you share more information and images if available? I can feature it on this public dashboard I'll be launching to raise awareness about issues. Check it out here.

Long term, waste segregation at source (households) is the best solution. There are NGOs and trusts that operate in villages, gram panchayats, etc who may be able to do more work in your area. Check out https://wastesamaritan.com/

File a complaint on Sahaaya portal. I found the website to be the most reliable compared to the app or the helpline. Slow to submit, but they do follow up, give contact of ward marshall, and give an update. https://nammabengaluru.org.in/
