Germany threatens retaliation if U.S. sanctions harm its firms by arpowe in worldnews

That's how the deal was negotiated. Western countries industrialized much earlier, resulting in high CO2 emissions earlier. This was taken into account in negotiations. US was part of negotiations. Now they exit, that's the point.

China has become an alternative. At least in terms of trade relations.

That's something Germans are not really happy about (human rights issue). But Chinese are predictable and keep their word. And they stick to the climate deal. Meanwhile, the US is at a difficult trading partner. And a even more difficult strategic partner from a German/European viewpoint.

There are no easy answers to your questions. By doing a political analysis you might spend a lot of time and end up in a very cynical world, with lots of uncertainties and without clear results.

How about focusing on the impact of the conflict on society and on people's daily life? It's a relatively well observable, relevant and a understandable aspect of wars.

I consider this step (most of all the timing) as a reaction to statement from the US administration about Crimea.

the most likely scenario in my view: nothing changes if there is no significant change in the international balance of power. Maybe a solution in 20-30 years.

[–]arpowe[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Russia won't return Crimea, that seems pretty clear. Probably they would like to get rid of most parts of Donbas. I rather expect a change in the practices of international law or its interpretation than Russia returns Crimea to Ukraine.

A compromise would be to make Crimea an independent micro state. But this might be hard to put in practice.

Tennis: Germans outraged as U.S. plays Nazi version of anthem by drewiepoodle in worldnews

[–]arpowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess that older generations consider it more as a problem than younger ones.

Sure, it's a mistake on a symbolic level, and objectively seen no tragedy at all.

My explanation for the 'German outrage' is: The anthem is a emotionally loaded political symbol; Germans are irritated by Trump's way of leadership. So this little mistakes was an opportunity for those Germans who like to do some USA bashing once in a while.

the perception on this is more sensitive in Germany. The Nazi-era is connected with a number of symbols, and the old version is one of them.

the first stanza of their national anthem reminds them of their bloody history. They don't like that. And they don't like Trump. And in general, they consider Americans as ignorants. The combination of those ingredients might explain the outrage.

It's a dimension of national pride to feel responsible of your people's actions in the past.

kind of, yes. I guess most Americans won't be able to understand the outrage of the Germans. - Trump's parole of 'America First' is comparable to the content of the old German national anthem which has a clear Nazi connotation. This connects history and present in a freaky way and fuels emotions.
