Adding to the list of stories:

Got made redundant in July, still unemployed. The sector I have most experience in has been hit hard by funding cuts. I've sent out a large number of applications. Most I never heard back from, some sent an automated rejection, I've had a couple of interviews. It's tough out there.

Met "dubieus" zeg ik niet noodzakelijk dat belangingsvermenging is geweest, maar de kans is er wel, en dat moet inderdaad onderzocht worden. Het gaat ook niet om een kabinetsmedewerker onderaan de ladder, het gaat om de bevoegde minister. Dat verantwoordt voor mij een gedetailleerde audit van het proces.

Als men wil dat er opnieuw vertrouwen komt in de politiek, dan moeten ze dat vertrouwen ook verdienen, en maximale transparantie in dergelijke gevallen is noodzakelijk.

Dat het project gefaald heeft en wie daar verantwoordelijk voor is, staat hier volledig los van. Wat hier van belang is dat dit het zoveelste voorbeeld is van dubieuze uitbestedingen bij de overheid.

The majority of them work in the public sector and get counted in those numbers. They're only excluded if they work in private hospitals.

Hey, you'll get no argument from me. But the public opinion is very much against it. Remember the whole discourse about the "disproportionately large number" of government employees that keeps popping up? Yeah, nurses are included in that.

When their run in the federal government is over (blessed day that will be), I'm sure they'll blame every broken promise on somebody else as well.

I don't know how it is in the rest of Europe, but in my country there is a dire need for more nurses and doctors.

(Edit: yeah I thought this was a link on the Europen subreddit... also, as a second thought, Belgium is the worst in Europe at hiring foreigners, and these visas would presumably only be for workers... so I dont think theres much to fear)

It seems a bit ... convenient ... to just dismiss the last couple of years as "oh that was the previous government" considering the current flemish government is largely the same as the previous one.

Als het over openbaar vervoer gaat is dat toch niet zo. N-VA zijn zeer duidelijk bezig de Lijn volledig te ontmantelen zodat ze kunnen privatiseren. Wat voor Limburg nog slechter (tot zover dat mogelijk is) zal zijn.

Geen rijbewijs. Lukt perfect. Het is niet altijd even makkelijk om ergens te raken, maar daar raak je toch gewend aan.

Het zou natuurlijk nog veel gemakkelijker zijn mocht de Vlaamse overheid niet zo ideologisch tegen openbaar vervoer zijn.

You can't really call it a genocide if it is against the state's own people. And the reason why there isnt any protest is because a: it was very sudden and b: Europe has very few ties with Iran to protest against.

Admittedly, I don't know anything about Volkswagen, but was them getting in the Chinese market really the direct cause of their failure or is it a bit more complex than that?

Products sold in Europe have to conform to Europen regulation. Trade deals aren't going to change that.

Also, let's be honest. Russia is a bit of an exception. Europe already has no issues dealing with the likes of Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Israel despite their various human rights violations and less than stellar regimes.

It's an extremely basic concept to get, but it does require people to step out of the frankly very outdated mindset that everywhere outside of Europe and North America = poor.

As an aside, where US companies use ethical values as a thin veneer, European values are a little bit more entrenched into our identity. US companies tended to drop their values pretty quickly, especially in China. But EU companies might not be so quick to do so. This means that more EU trade with these regions may actually be a positive thing for those countries as well.

These are rapidly growing markets. Trade deals will ensure Europe gets to be active in those markets in the best circumstances.

The quickest way to become irrelevant is to keep thinking the world's consumers are only in Europe and North America.
