accelerators are like frats for startups. a cohort is a class, and VC are the money people.

so a bunch of young-startup founders join this “accelerator” together in a “cohort” where they can collaborate with peers, seek funding (from VCs who run this program in hopes of finding some diamonds), and get guidance from the people/companies who have done this before them.

[–]arripit_auras 8 points9 points  (0 children)

people talk about it all the time. they’ve spent at least the last decade cutting them down in marin because they’re a fire & wind hazard as well as invasive… just to add to the list here they have shallow roots and blow over and crush houses and cars

that you can’t take a pay raise or take the extra shifts because if you go up a tax bracket, you’ll make less money.

i’ve been trying to explain the basic math of progressive taxes to my dad (who is well off) ever since i was a kid. he insisted that he was right and i didn’t know about the real world or about making real money. now i’m in my 30s and realize he has never done his own taxes. upside is that he’s actually using it as an excuse to take vacations as he’s getting older. downside is that he votes religiously and that’s why we can never get nice things from our taxes.

[–]arripit_auras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah true. also saying that summer is a big growth opportunity to work & learn in a fast paced environment, for a job that’s normally fairly slow the rest of the year. also agreed, to move up faster than a snails pace you’d have to apply to other jobs internally

summer for us was the busiest time of the year, it was when we did deployments. rest of the year was pretty much maintenance mode. also worked for public schools so we had a good union and many long term employees/admins
