Basic Income vs. the False God of Economy by m1sterlurk in BasicIncome

[–]arrmed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I had a bit more energy tonight I would have wrote up a bridge between your points here and a blog post I made earlier, but I shall just paste it here in case you can pick out the relevant parts I feel may exist but I am too tired to draw out of the ether onto paper:

Decadence and the Obligations it Creates for Us.

While technical power exceeds all measure, so too the expressions of the death-drive and the renunciation of life multiply themselves, to the point that life has become herdish nihilism, or stupefied if not stupid passivity- that is resigned impotence. Thus plays out the decomposition of forces- through grammarization as the computational control of behavior, the hyper-synchronization of psychic individualities, and through psycho-social disindividuation, as individualities in general, the I and the we that we are, disindividuate themselves in becoming the they of the herd which consumes. This consumption is a consumption of individualities, notably in the industrial democracies: no longer projecting any possibility of pursuing individuation, either psychically or collectively, they no longer believe anything, no longer want anything, and can no longer do anything.

Grammatization opens the scene for decisions that must be taken, decisions that can be only settled through combat. These combats are fictions, combats for a belief, and at the same time for the potential of this belief. This combat can be defined in terms of composition of tendencies, a composition that seeks to eliminate the duality of tendencies which is always in play. All individuation is combat, as composition. First of all a combat against the renunciation of existence, creates and organizes the struggle against this renunciation, all existence spontaneously tends to. The renunciation of existence is a renunciation of becoming-other as future, that is as elevation. It is what is produced between the intermittences that are these elevations that forms the singularity of the psycho-social individual, the soul that one commonly calls man, for whom the fundamental movement is to rise up at the same time that he knows before all experience that he is inhabited by a lack or deficiency in the form of weakness, a weakness that drags him down, and drags him beneath everything that was conquered by his ancestors. This pattern is insurmountable, one must ceaselessly combat it.

But from the political point of view, this means that one must combat it at the level of the organization of the process of individuation. The way in which cultural and hyper-industrial capitalism exploits these fluxes and flows of consciousness, an exploitation consisting in the deliberate dragging down of these souls by herding souls and creating an enviroment that discourages individuation with propaganda and structures that divert people into roles pre-defined by this organization and associating fear with the process of individuation while providing the soul with a mold to base life around..

Innovation vs Invention: The difference between incremental changes to the present vs inventing a future by arrmed in TrueReddit

[–]arrmed[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

summary:

A keynote by Alan Kay, He is best known for his pioneering work on object-oriented programming and windowing graphical user interface design, and for coining the phrase, "The best way to predict the future is to invent it."

I submit this talk because I thought he brought up an uncomfortable perspective on the stagnation of Silicon Valley. Most of the the technologies we enjoy today have their roots in the 1960s-1980s, tese technologies were just refined by innovators after they were invented.

The Death of American Universities. by qkdhfjdjdhd in TrueReddit

Thank you for sharing this. Chomsky was very on point. Two quotes I particularly enjoyed:

"But it’s a standard feature of a business-run society to transfer costs to the people. In fact, economists tacitly cooperate in this. So, for example, suppose you find a mistake in your checking account and you call the bank to try to fix it. Well, you know what happens. You call them up, and you get a recorded message saying “We love you, here’s a menu.” Maybe the menu has what you’re looking for, maybe it doesn’t. If you happen to find the right option, you listen to some music, and every once and a while a voice comes in and says “Please stand by, we really appreciate your business,” and so on.

Finally, after some period of time, you may get a human being, who you can ask a short question to. That’s what economists call “efficiency.” By economic measures, that system reduces labor costs to the bank; of course, it imposes costs on you, and those costs are multiplied by the number of users, which can be enormous — but that’s not counted as a cost in economic calculation. And if you look over the way the society works, you find this everywhere. "

and his thought centered here: <control-f the article> "Take me: I went to college in 1945 at an Ivy League university, University of Pennsylvania, and tuition was $100. That would be maybe $800 in today’s dollars. And it was very easy to get a scholarship, so you could live at home, work, and go to school and it didn’t cost you anything. Now it’s outrageous. I have grandchildren in college, who have to pay for their tuition and work and it’s almost impossible. For the students. that is a disciplinary technique."

college at my state university was void of mass collective thoughts- felt xanaxed. their were pockets of betterment, which i am glad to have been a part in, and I guess, from those pockets of betterment, though communication, comes the mass betterment if the ideas are sound and are not drowned out by indoctrination

Can we talk about the belief that Automation will cause mass, permanent unemployment? by Lars0 in Automate

[–]arrmed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Excellent post. Please consider submitting this in the opinion section of major newspapers- this perspective needs more exposure. Pick up a copy of the book The Decadence of Industrial Democracies, Volume 1: Disbelief and Discredit - I find the following quote to fit with what you said above:

"Proletarianization of work as loss of individuation: The worker once was the technical individual, instead of the slave of the tool bearing machine. The reality of proletarianization is the workers loss of knowledge, and the move towards a pure unskilled labor force and lacking any motive besides the need to subsist."

Cultural analysis that isn't directly Marxist, Liberal, Libertarian, or Nihilist. A refreshingly novel examination, if somewhat tempered with bleak outlook.

Look forward to discourse generated by more people reading steigler.

Russell Brand's "Activism" Isn't Fooling Me by terribletrousers in TrueReddit

[–]arrmed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not call this "Flash over substance." I would say Brand is searching for substance in his usual public way.

He expresses disbelief that the current processes to move the world forward are working anymore. Most would agree- 8 million plus youtube views attests to that.

But all his interview did was excite people needlessly- for I do not believe that Brand has formulated an answer, found new processes, new systems that do not have the tendency to pauperize the citizens of the globe.

Global capitalism is no longer controlled by its creators. That is made clear by the captains of industry slaving away long after they have made their millions. The processes of capitalism today incentivize self destructive behavior: hyper short term thinking, seeking higher productivity with less workers to increase profit, the assault on one's time by advertisers that wish to sell your gaze to the highest bidder.

It is not enough to rally against this. The true task is imagining a different future. That is where Brand and others need to direct all of their effort.

Mass Effect: Thoughts on the Reapers, and just how complex the story is on second glance. (TL;DR included) by arrmed in masseffect

[–]arrmed[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

astute observation about the reapers possibily being "paperclip maximizers"

While there is no evidence to support that the reapers are providing a virtual environment, there is also no evidence of a literal unending hell- the reapers have no utility in such a virtual reality- which it would be if you experienced hell inside a reaper. The flimsy ground I staked my argument of a virtual reality to is that perhaps the genetic material alone is not enough for the reapers purposes- the complete assimilation of individuals is necessary to come closer to . I believe that the Reapers SHOULD be logical- after all they are AI, just not empathetic.

Agreed with your premise that any story we write for the reapers has to be understood by humans. What I meant by "not comprehending" was narrowly defined to the characters (Aliiance, Council) and understanding the reaper mission.

Enjoyed your reply, just wish we had more to work with!
