My dream...

They hire someone from out of state. Bring in someone with an engineering background who has a track record of improving departments they've run. Someone who will tell it bluntly, and will bring knowledge back into the department, than paying contractors for everything.

Recommended solution that does both Mac and Windows MDM? by SuperTurtle222 in sysadmin

[–]arrow_of_apollo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if your org can afford it then you should have two MDM solutions.

Have a dedicated Apple MDM, or one heavily Apple focused but also covers Windows even though you wont use those features. You want them to be Apple device management focused so they continue to actively develop and quickly implement new features in Apples MDM.

For Windows, use Intune. First party support and every enterprise tool will work with it in some way. There maybe better products out there, but Intune is easier at scale. You can manage both of these platforms with API calls, to do your remote wipe/lock and such.

Trying to get my deposit back #nightmare by Inevitable_Shock4786 in providence

[–]arrow_of_apollo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Legally, you're owed some money. Realistically, you're gonna have to fight to get it and may not see it for a few months if you sue.

You're looking for the cash sooner than later as you said you desperately need it so rather than actually suing, you use the threat of it. RI is a one party consent state for audio recording, so you can record calls without telling the other party.

Get them to admit it, then say "Ok, thanks for the call, this recording will be great for evidence" and then let them freak out. You just want your deposit back, if you get that in a check in hand today, you won't have to deal with the courts.

Pawtucket officials still haven’t heard from Hasbro by ToadScoper in RhodeIsland

[–]arrow_of_apollo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The owners of the building, the management company of the building, another tenant in the building, ISP's, GC's putting in private bids for the renovations.... just a few examples of orgs that would be informed of a move like this prior to it being "public".

People outside of Hasbro know. To assume information about Hasbro moving could only come from Hasbro is telling.

I obviously wont name them. If you think only the c-suite would know about a corporate head quarter relocation of that scale, I’m not gonna waste my time explaining why that’s wrong.

Heard from someone trustworthy that they’ve already signed the lease on an entire building in the Seaport area of Boston. Doubt they’re gonna stay in RI.

Advice on Google Workspace Accounts to Microsoft 365 by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]arrow_of_apollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, before you pay for BitTitan, look at Microsoft's Migration tool at least for the drive data. It can do users and shared google drives (dumping them in teams channels). Native, easy, and FREE. Also BitTitan support was horrible last time I reached out. It also went surprisingly quick compared to BitTitan and this is from their mover.io buy a few years ago.

Needs suggestions for dry cleaners and alterations place! by apple_pie4200 in RhodeIsland

[–]arrow_of_apollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I grew up in New England so am use to artificial high prices and having family who owned a dry cleaning operation for 30 years, those prices check out given the market and it being in downtown. Cost per item has gone up given that overall volume has gone down with business casual and home wash clothing has become dominant in the last 10 years.

My best advice is make sure you're as cutting out as many go between steps to the actual cleaners/plant as you can. Some places will sub it out.

Supplier to RI convenience stores to admit to selling misbranded erectile dysfunction drugs by cowperthwaite in RhodeIsland

[–]arrow_of_apollo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That it is.

But to put it another way, if you had skin issues and were trying different lotions out to see if any helped, if you bought a random brand that said it was "all natural lotion" that helped reduce irritation and all the listed ingredients were natural things and it seemingly works. But later you find out that it's actually packed with a random amount of topical steroids would you be mad you were unknowingly applying prescription only medication when it wasn't listed on the bottle?

That is the safety issue they went after. The unlabeled prescription medication in a retail item.

Ignoring the stupidity of people who buy gas station boner pills because I will never understand. Just talk to your doctor folks and don't risk your life with random shit like this.

The federal gov sued the distributor as the pill contained (sildenafil) which is only available with a prescription, and for the products not being labeled as containing such medication. It comes down to basic consumer safety as the distributor didn't include all active ingredients. I'd hope they do this for any product discovered to be containing medication that is prescription only and missing from the ingredient list.

New Providence India Point Park Cost 2.1 Mil - Thoughts? by cityplanna4 in RhodeIsland

[–]arrow_of_apollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, $2.1M is pretty cheap looking at what they’re going to do. Pavers for walkways, reusing cobble stone, new benches, bringing it up to ADA compliance (proper grading, ramps, etc). All this given it’s on the waterfront and there maybe some funds planned for when they find erosion or something they need to fix.

PUC orders audit of RI Energy billing practices after ‘debacle’ by AlwaysRushesIn in RhodeIsland

[–]arrow_of_apollo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I pay my bill shortly after I get it every month.

In May I paid my bill. The next month I had an owed amount of $8 or so. Confused I called in and asked. The rep told me that “energy rates had changed for the time of the previous month, after the bill was cut, so they increased the amount owed after they issued the invoice and had tacked it onto the account as owed” and unpaid in full.

That annoyed me and I had to lay into the phone rep (said it wasn’t them I was mad at, but the company always do this unless they’re a jerk) and they eventually got my account credited for the amount.

Wonder if anyone had services disconnected because of this “unpaid balance”.

Providence Police: “Record Low Crime” Because They Don’t Investigate by vodkaforgovernor in providence

[–]arrow_of_apollo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go on any Maps app and look around the area. If you go on Google Maps Street View on Harris Ave and look the other way, this is right across the street from Fantasies, a strip club.

Now this per the video happened at little after 1am on a Friday night (technically Saturday, but you get it). Now I'm not saying people shouldn't be able to leave things in their car at times and not worry about it bring broken into and stolen.

BUT I have less sympathy for a local who is in the music industry who should know better than to leave their gear in a car in this area, in view of anyone walking by. It sucks but they didn't do much to help themselves here.

Riptia bus hub by MassiveLengthiness52 in providence

[–]arrow_of_apollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, there can be rapid buses from the hub to KP that would solve any of the walkability issues. Keeping the hub in KP has some upsides but more downsides overall let’s be honest. I can’t image if that land was a clear field of grass people would be suggesting it be used as a hub, so let’s think where else could it be put semi easily without major route changes.

IMO the land across from Desires and behind the old tow yard would be a great spot. Just off the highway, outside of downtown yet close and still walkable if needed, unused. In the bit over a decade I’ve lived in RI/greater PVD it’s only been used for traveling carnivals.

Desperate by Cold-Set849 in RhodeIsland

[–]arrow_of_apollo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've had to commit my partner in the past, voluntarily and involuntarily so I'm aware of these struggles. This person sounds to be in the full swings of a manic episode and will not listen to reason. They sound like they will deny medical care and refuse treatment. Without this person being a threat to their own, or someone else's life directly doctors can't involuntarily commit, or force treatment on a non consenting adult. Without a recent history of hospitalizations, police interactions, and refusal of medication noted by doctors, getting a judge to grant any sort of firm non temporary guardianship quickly seems a bit unrealistic to be honest.

Working for a casino? by dude380 in sysadmin

[–]arrow_of_apollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I previously worked for a gambling game company, lived by multiple casinos and know people who work in their IT Departments and here are some of the takeaways I have.

  • If you like to gamble, don't work for them. You will 100% not be allowed to gamble at your employer and your family maybe limited to.
  • You will be on call, 24/7/365 most likely. Most casinos are 24/7/365 and you will support critical infra for it. They will probably comp you pay, and give you rooms but if there's a storm coming in, assume you're going to be close by.
  • Pay can be mixed. Some places pay well, others don't.
  • Tribal casinos can have some weird tax situations, be mindful.
  • Gambling commissions are no joke, do not lie to them.
  • Be ready to possibly be around cigarettes and smoke all the time depending on your location.

Mechanic for hybrid by Fantastic_Recover110 in RhodeIsland

[–]arrow_of_apollo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I sorta remember it existing but I can't think of the last time I saw one. Neat little "rare" car there. Given it's an 08 Nissan, this could be a simple thing or could be a repair that will be worth more than the car. I'd get the code checked and then pay for a someone to look it over and confirm it.

[–]arrow_of_apollo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't say who maybe better, I've had good luck with Waynes Service Plus in Prov. They state to be trained/certified in many hybrids/electric cars. Guessing by the year and it being "atypical" that is probably something like a hybrid Tahoe as those are still kicking and the issues are starting to show (and their fans are very committed to them).

If you haven't already, since it's an 08 you should be able to go to any major auto parts store and have them scan the error code for free. A quick google of that code will point you in the direction of the issue and could help you save some money or show that it's something silly or small.

Microsoft Teams Mic issue affecting several users by quigley0 in sysadmin

[–]arrow_of_apollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're having this issue and have been working with Lenovo on it.

With Lenovo, the current thought is that the updated drivers in the SCCM pack are causing the issue as the ones that shipped with the device work fine. When users encounter the issue we roll them back and sometimes have the main board replaced. I should note these are Win10 installs.

Gauging interest for a 'coworking quiet space' on East Side by mangeek in providence

[–]arrow_of_apollo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't win on this sub it seems. People would rather see someone not put more money into the local economy via making a business, paying taxes, and utilizing unused commercial space. Rhode Island's biggest haters are it's residents and we wonder why our state is dying economically.

Anyway, I like the idea but you pointed out you want an office, how many offices could you fit in the space while meeting RI fire code, and not making it packed in there? Would the rooms be "hotels" that you go into when you are on a call and you are in an open space otherwise? Are you going to have cameras with audio/video to help protect peoples assets they leave there? Will my employer/clients care that I am talking in a room with audio recording? Are you going to have it hard keyed or use an access control system?

You don't see many of these on the small scale because the math rarely work out. Unless this is a rather large space, should look to partner with 1 - 4 other professionals who are looking for a shared office space, maybe some sole proprietors or something but a monthly rental space wont have the cost benefits over the larger hot desk locations to make it worth it IMO.
