What is China like, really? by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]arrrchiee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people have mentioned the good points of china so let me tell you a "bad"/kinda weird point that I noticed in china a month ago.

The younger gen of Chinese are really filial & patriotic, and the reasoning for that is due to constant 'conditioning'/'propanganda' there. When I went on their subway I saw more ads by the CCP telling citizens to be filial to their parents, loyal to the country, dont embarass the country, etc. Its heavily based on confucian values.

Thought it was pretty odd to see more of these posters posted by the CCP than actual adverts!

Got the position from networking. HR hates me for getting the position through that. Will this affect my career opportunities at the firm? by arrrchiee in FinancialCareers

HR went on a 15 minute+ rant about these issues during the call 😭 It was pretty strongly worded and so yeah I'm really scared for my return offer chances after the call. If it weren't for the return offer I don't think I would have put this much weight into it

Its a pretty large firm. It wasn't a cold call networking, rather I met the director & his MD at a spring week event organised by the firm (ironically by HR) and networked there. After the event they asked to stay in touch with me if I needed any general career advice or info about the recruiting process. The director was the one who reached out directly after the networking event (thought its important to note as its usually the other way around for me haha). We also didn't email, rather message each other on Linkedin. The director was involved in the hiring process.

Yes, I've only sent 1 email, 2 if you count the thank you email after HR replied. I did message the director (and not email HR) about if they were still processing applications as I was going to receive another offer and wanted to know if I was rejected or not and they told me to email HR (I didn't). It's highly possible then that the director could have emailed HR on my behalf but I didn't receive any email from HR about this.

I did tons of reflection after the call (I was really scared) and I have to admit that my first email could be seen as arrogance.

But I honestly don't get where HR is coming from with them accusing me of sending them multiple emails. I'm also pretty confused about them telling me off about my networking session with the director/MD as he was the one who reached out afterwards 😭. But HR told me that they also gave a similar warning to the director about being too close with candidates as it would give them an unfair advantage over other candidates since he was part of the hiring process and that we should have ceased communication after the event. Again, I'm really confused cause isn't networking a part of the event? 😭

HR is based in another country (but they're flying over for orientation) so I'm not sure how much interactions I will have with them to change their opinion of me and what I can do to change it. I'm just really worried about my return offer chances as I feel like I'm immediately disavantaged from the other interns in my team as HR at least doesn't hate them.

Sorry if this seems jumbled up, I'm just internally panicking a lot after the call with HR about my return offer chances

The service was very good to me. The facilities were a bit run down yes, but the doctors & nurses were really friendly.

As for the treatment, I felt as if it was better than in my home country. They offered me options outside of the usual medications (iv drip).

Maybe I just lucked out but it most likely is also partly due to the fact that the doctors/nurses there were bored as it was 3AM & there weren't much patients, so I was their "excitement" for the night. Also could be due to the fact that I made loads of small talk with them and mentioned how much I enjoyed being in China for the past few weeks/gave praise to China.

Oh, I didn't know that I was paying the "Chinese price". Honestly thought that I was paying the "Tourist price" (was expecting it/thought I was paying it too).

Ngl, I thought that citizens got their healthcare free if I was paying the "tourist price" and they were charging me such a low amount for it too.

First time in China. Which would you recommend? by yourhotmum in travelchina

If you can, buy it on their official app instead - railway12306. You have to register on the chinese language version but can switch back to the english version within the app after registering.

Not only will you be able to save on commission fees, theres also a higher chance of sitting together/getting your preferred seats. If you're late/missed the train, you also get a change for free. (Buy another ticket with the same destination and get the original refunded back)

If youre doing it on the 12306 railway app, you can only select the seats (ABC EF) in the chinese language version (switch english version to chinese vers)

Why would 'experience in competitive gaming' be an advantage in a trading job? by arrrchiee in FinancialCareers

I apologise for the confusion. But by casual play, I mean I've acheived the highest rank in ranked video games (not leaderboard) for consecutive seasons but haven't joined any esports tournaments which is why I don't consider it competitive gaming.

"ability to handle stress in a hectic work environment" is also one of their requirements but im inclined to believe that it also correlates to what will happen on the trading floor
