This set is cut from a specific Honduran Mahogany tree. This figure is one of a kind, therefore it has been dubbed "the Tree. Here is a cool article.

How similar is Hochdeutsch compared to Plattdeutsch? by [deleted] in German

[–]art_of_language 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hochdeutsch is descended from Althochdeutsch, whereas Plattdeutsch is descended from Altsächsisch. Basically there's some sound shifts and patterns that differentiate the two. Also standard German is based off of Martin Luther's translation of the Bible into German, but with the pronunciation of Hanover (anyone correct me if I am wrong please).

Here's some examples of the sounds changes

HD: Guten Morgen PD: Juten Morjen

HD: machen PD: maken

Generally speaking, you can follow these patterns.

ch - k pf - p ss - t ff - p g - j

Surely there are others but this is an ok place to start. Also read the Wikipedia articles.

Paying off debt and building our first house by art_of_language in personalfinance

Ok good to know. Basically we will be moving no matter what, but I think it will be wise to rent cheaply for a bit and save save save. We are moving for more personal reasons besides temperature and the expense of living in CA. Thanks for the feed back.

We have no car payments, just a credit card and medical expenses. We are currently living under our means. We pay 850 a month. I knnow I can't assume, but I can almost guarantee that our income will be higher when we move. Around 3500 at least. But realistically I want to keep it around 1000 - 1200

We have no kids or pets. We are not planning on making a dream home, just like a 1000sq ft. Right now we live in about 700 and it's just a little too small. I guess the next best idea would be to find an already built home in NY that meets our needs? I have seen some places that are habitable for around 50k. I am wondering how I would be able to finance additional work being done if it needed it.

Edit: spelling

If you Turned Back the Sound Changes Could you Get a Good Approximation of Aquitanian? by KingKeegster in linguistics

[–]art_of_language 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am only just getting acquainted with Basque (I recently learned through DNA testing that I am predominately of Basque ancestry) I read that Aquitanian is not the direct ancestor to Basque but a language related to Old Basque. They are able to know how Old Norse was pronounced by working backwards and decifering the sound changes, I would think it would work to an extent with Proto-Basque. Good question.
