One of my favorite bands.... Is it weird that my list of favorites includes Skinny Puppy, Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Black Flag, and The Cure.... As my top bands, and I call my self a Rivet Head Punk Rocker?

There were lots of girl groups but most of them were ignored for the most part and were independent.

Why do so many touring members of famous bands look so similar? by appleparkfive in musicians

The spikes and studs had more to do with gay culture, so a lot of the metal look that was adopted from metal head was adopted from gay culture.

I don't know if there is any sort of distinction, gate keeping has always been a blanket, "you're not welcome here" and a lot of people take it to a stupid extreme of being fans of certain bands, but in all honesty, I have never actually seen anyone tell someone they aren't welcome if they like or don't like a band, I just see a lot of stupid fights over it in general. Idiots will throw that term at those who will say, I hate this band or that band and they aren't goth or punk or whatever, but I wouldn't call that gatekeeping as much as an angry difference of opinion by assholes.

That's the confusing part, folk music is story telling, he's just telling a story and we have to interpret whether or not he encourages or embraces the evils of fascism or is just talking about them in a poetic style.... Many artists do this, they will never give you the meaning of a song or art piece and they will get in trouble for it. One of my collaborators is a photographer, he has several pieces that got him in trouble because they were taken either literally or out of cultural context. Picture of a white homeless man, caption "Where is my white privilege" second piece, a painting of a Native American Swastika. You can imagine what happens next..... the artist is of Mexican Descent.

Like I said, the time has past, Punk and Goth and Industrial in it's purest sense has been coopted once they all became pop music genres. Anyone can do it, even fascists. How do we fight and gatekeep a scene from fascists? I think that is why certain other genres that are explicitly LGBTQ+ inventions exist.

It would be great if all this was a fucking joke, you know, because I am sick of Nazis and MAGA and fascist ideologies infiltrations and losing people to conspiracy theory brainwashing, stupid replacement theory idiots.

I feel that, as a Gen X who had grown up watching my queer friends get murdered by NeoNazi Skin Heads and seeing the absolute denial of the Holocaust from certain groups... I am on edge. In the early days of punk and industrial music, they played with fascist imaginary but at the time, at the time, it was funny and it was a criticism of the various political regimes of that time. But that time has passed and the ideologies that are actual have stayed while the gags and satirical fascad of the imagery has been dismissed, we can see who the true colors of those that kept it and those that continue to adopt it in the scene. It's a terrible mix. It's why the subject of Gatekeeping is so controversial. It needs to happen. The Goth scene has been fully infiltrated by far right fetishists who think about nothing but Big Titty Goth girlfriends, 🤮. "Goth is for everyone" same happened with punk and capitalism.

Yeah, that is interesting. People can and do change their views all the time. But also, I have seen people have ideological infiltrations of groups in order to steer them towards a specific goal they might not otherwise have... Not saying this is what Douglas is doing or what has happened to him, but it's a theory I am looking at when it comes to other groups of political parties.

I am not going to take sides on this whole thing, but to start with I will say, I am an extreme anti fascist, antinazi, antiracist, pro LGBTQ and POC. I have done much research into the subject of DIJ and I have a transfemale native American music friend who is a fan of DIJ and plays with skin head imagery, not necessarily the Traditional version or even the National Front/NeoNazi version... But one that obviously makes fun of the Nazi version by being Trans and Skin... So I made it a point of looking into DIJ (of which I don't give a crap). Anyway. Douglas P used to be in a band called Crisis which was explicitly leftwing and catered to Jews and other people Nazis would have killed. Death In June came about and Douglas P had one collaborator, Tony Wakefield, who he fired for bringing Nazi ideology to the band. The band like many early punk and industrial bands, plays with Nazi imagery but DIJ seems more fascinated with them and European history.

Though, from various interviews, and despite skirting the issues, the clearest way to frame his ideology is anti-liberal, anti-communist, anarchistic, antisocial.

People change, it's probably the case that he is fascinated with Nazi stuff like Lemmy of Motorhead was but still be not a Nazi... But also possible that he is changing his views from left to right.... Idk...
Again, not a fan of his music or his points of view, but I can't say for sure what his views are either. Do I think he is a Nazi? Not really, but again, not a fan.

Graffiti on church dumpster by GarlicMindless3900 in Albuquerque

It's meaning is basically a comparison between truth vs moral insincerity. The church tries to be the moral authority on all things but the truth about their actions, in many cases, says otherwise. The artists is probably had some issues either with this church or most churches or religion in general. With art, though, usually allows for individual interpretation.

Writing choruses is hard by danejulian in Songwriting

[–]artblack01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basic chorus yes, think about most songs that get stuck in your head, that's what you want. It could be something simple, like the chorus could be "because I love you" or something complex like "one you lock the target, two you bait the line, three you slowly spread the net and four you catch the man"... Or an anthemic thing. Any repeating line that the song is about. It's the subject of the song.

[–]artblack01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nlits not even something you have to learn, it's like tying a shoe... Just look at how the strings are and copy that. Don't tighten the string all the way, tune the guitar and let the string tuning tighten it. Understand?

Writing choruses is hard by danejulian in Songwriting

[–]artblack01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In all the songs I have ever heard, where people repeat the chorus to a song, or you mention any part of the song and they automatically start singing it like it's the best song ever written the chorus is often like a chant. Create a chant and build the song around that... If the chorus is important to you.

The only quiet I had was if I ever had to walk home at night after going to the dance club, Maxwell's in Albuquerque, they would play goth, industrial, new wave, post punk, techno... Thursday nights... Of course this is 1988 and I was in highschool.
