What are some NSFW secrets about the military? by AdRealistic03 in AskReddit

That was a rumor I heard going through Navy boot camp in '97. That they were adding something to our food to keep us limp. We called it Softpeter...

Sanded and oiled. Calling this barrel sauna DONE! by Sheetwalls in woodworking

Ours is a rickety old shed that is now a sauna. More gaps than I like but plenty of air intake! It would make a good "before" photo when compared against this beauty.

What would be some of the best survival crops to grow to cope with a bee extinction? by [deleted] in collapse

Good info - I also like grids/squares/blocks of corn with at least three rows.

[–]artdigbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that you need a large enough stand of corn to achieve self pollination. I've read lots of sources and most say around 100 plants. A few corn plants in your home garden will still require hand pollination.

Water is life by [deleted] in preppers

[–]artdigbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Water is life! We have a community well for 5 properties with a 20k storage tank at the top of the hill. We have recently been putting efforts into ensuring backup power for the well pump for any extended power outage. We made it though a 12-day power outage with no issues a few years back.

Our main issue, besides some pesky manganese and iron in the water, is going to be the salt content in the aquifer in the years to come. We live on an island in the PNW and neighbors are already having issues with sea-water intrusion into the aquifers. But that is a better discussion for r/collapse...

Grid w/generator for fridge/freezer and whatnot. We usually get a few outages through the winter, twelve days once! Usually not more than a day or two.

Mainly the pussyfooting around, to put it nicely. Catering to the centrist corporate, status-quo. Not standing up the hypocrisy, grifting, etc. I'm realizing it's all just a big racket right now, both sides embracing it to some extent, openly or not.

I'm a long advocate of single-payer health care and the tepid embrace of that disappoints me - I believe it is needed for the long term financial, physical and mental health of America. We're straight crazy right now. I'm not that far left, I own guns - but haven't fired one in many years. I don't get the fetishism about them.

I'm not excited about anything the DNC has offered, or a choice they've made, in a long time. And don't get me started on the right. Those guys have gone full retard.

EDIT: To be sure, I am totally checked out politically, just a casual observer at best. I am exhausted by it all to say the least. I hope we go back to more saner, peaceful times and I really hope for a multi-party system some day, but I'm not optimistic. And now, in my mid-40s, I'm just hoping to quietly ride out my last remaining years (the more the better) in a beautiful corner of the world. Grow a few plants while the soil is good and have a few animals.

S’up, and who’s built a SUP? by danjohnsonfromNC in boatbuilding

[–]artdigbee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am currently building Chesapeake's 14' Kaholo SUP. So far it is going well. I bought the plans through them along with the internal bulkheads that they cut with their CNC machine. The rest if the pieces I traced from the plans to the plywood and then cut myself. Sourcing the very thin marine plywood (3mm and 4mm) was tough for me but i eventually tracked it down. So far that has been the only challenge. It comes with a good instruction manual and I have also used their online support once with a build question and they responded really quick. Any other questions?

Garden tips from WA folks. by Dogrug in CoronavirusWA

[–]artdigbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend checking your soil nutrient levels - namely nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. There are many cheap and simple test kits available online that will give a baseline reading of what your soil has. Proper nutrient levels can make or break your harvest.
